Education Leaves. Employees may request education leave as provided in board policy and regulations for management employees. Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the Governing Board may grant bargaining unit employees a leave of absence without pay for the purpose of educational improvement. Such leave shall last not less than one semester or more than one year. An extension of the leave may be granted where completion of the course for advancement requires longer than one year and where the advantage will accrue to the District.

Education Leaves. (i) At the Employer’s discretion, the Employer may grant a leave of absence for an educational leave which may be fully subsidized, partially subsidized, or granted with no financial assistance. (ii) Subject to operational requirements, leave of absence with pay shall be granted to allow an employee to write examinations for courses approved by the Employer prior thereto. (iii) It is understood and agreed that if training and/or educational leave is required by the employer it is considered work time in accordance with the applicable provisions of this agreement. The Employer will pay for any required tuition and books. (iv) Leaves of absence for education purposes shall not be unreasonably denied. (v) Subject to the terms of individual benefit plans, while an employee is on Education Leave, the Employer shall allow participation in medical, disability, group life and pension benefit plans. The employee and the Employer will each continue to pay their share of the premium costs for maintaining coverage during the period of Leave. (vi) When an Employee reports for work upon the expiration of an Education Leave, the Employee shall resume work in the position held by the Employee immediately before the leave began or where that position is eliminated in a comparable position with not less than the same wages and benefits, with no loss of seniority or benefits accrued to the commencement of the leave.
Education Leaves. A. Employees who desire to further their education may request to move from full- time to part-time, or full- time leave status. Half-time leave status is defined as one half of the hourly amount required to designate the employee as full-time. Upon approval the employee may work half time. The employee will request the leave in writing. B. Upon approval by the District, an employee may take up to one year leave of absence for education without pay or District contribution to benefits. Upon return the employee will be placed in the same position or a similar position for which he/she is qualified, if a position is available at time of return. C. The employee may continue District-sponsored insurance programs while on leave by paying the premiums directly to the insurance company.

Nurses may request such leaves in increments of less than one (1) year. A. In no event will more than three (3) nurses in any one (1) year be permitted to take such leave. B. The right of approval shall be vested exclusively with the Hospital. The Hospital will not be required to guarantee return rights to nurses taking such leave to position, nursing unit, hours or shifts held prior to such leave. 1. Within thirty (30) calendar days following the expiration of such leave, the nurse must exercise her/his rights under Article 6, Section 2, and be successfully awarded a position to retain their original seniority date. If a nurse fails to exercise her/his bidding rights within the thirty (30) calendar day period, the original seniority date will be lost. 2. Thereafter, the nurse may apply for any available position and will be considered along with any other external applicants. C. While on such leave, the nurse shall cease to accrue any additional holiday pay, sick leave, or any other accrual benefits, or time toward tenure increases. Upon commencing such leave, the nurse may continue to participate under the Hospital's medical and dental insurance programs consistent with applicable state or federal law. 1. A nurse shall accrue the benefits listed above, if while on such leave s/he continues in the employ of the Hospital in a status of five-tenths (.5) or greater as defined elsewhere in this Agreement.
Education Leaves. Leaves of absence without pay not exceeding one (1) year may be granted teachers who wish to further their education on a full-time basis provided such academic work entails a minimum of at least eight (8) semester hours per semester or twelve (12) quarter hours per quarter. No teacher shall be eligible for more than one (1) such leave every seven (7) years of consecutive service with the Memphis City Schools.

Education Leaves. 14.3.1 For the purpose of becoming enrolled on a full-time basis for work towards a degree at a duly accredited university or college, an employee having more than three years of seniority, upon written request at least sixty (60) work days in advance of the requested leave, may be granted a leave of absence not to exceed one (1) year.
