Personal Leave Use. Subject to the specific approval of the Chief of Police or his/her designee, personal leave may be used in increments of not less than two (2) hours, may be used in conjunction with other forms of leave authorized or may be used in conjunction with official travel. Personal leave balances may not under any circumstances be used during a termination notice period and will not be paid upon termination.

Personal Leave Use. A. Personal leave may not be taken by an employee during the first month of employment unless authorized by the employee’s immediate supervisor. In order to avoid employee “burn out” each employee shall be strongly encouraged to take at least ten (10) days of personal leave in each calendar year. B. Accrued personal leave may be used for vacation or illness. Leave other than that used for illness must be requested at least three (3) weeks in advance, in writing, and approved by the employee’s supervisor. Leave for one (1) or two (2) days may be requested at any time. C. For illness, leave may also be used for medical or dental appointments for the employee and members of his/her immediate family. An employee will contact his/her supervisor at the earliest possible time to inform him/her of ill health. If leave for illness exceeds three (3) consecutive days, the CEO may require a note from the physician. D. JAMHI recognizes burn-out as a reality, and as a high probability for all full time permanent staff. If it appears to the CEO that a staff person is not taking adequate leave or if the staff person appears to be exhibiting symptoms of burn-out, the CEO may request that staff person to take adequate leave. E. Approval of Supervisor: Leave over two (2) weeks in duration must be requested at least thirty- five (35) days in advance (unless waived by the CEO) and must be approved by the employee’s supervisor and the CEO. To the maximum extent possible consistent with JAMHI operational needs, such requests shall be honored.
