Assignment of Teaching. 17.01.1 It is expected that each Department shall ordinarily assign those courses within the Department which its members are to teach. In so doing, the Department is responsible for ensuring that there is a reasonable balance between small and large classes and that there is an equitable distribution of workload among members of the Department taking into account independent study courses, Honours thesis supervision, the varying demands of alternative teaching and evaluation methodologies. Whenever possible, there shall be prior consultation with Employees on the assignment of teaching duties.
17.01.2 In recognition of the need for new faculty to develop scholarly research programmes, which may include scholarship on teaching, Departments should, whenever possible, limit the number of new courses assigned to faculty who have taught at St. Xxxxxx fewer than four (4) years.
17.01.3 Authority to make assignments rests with the appropriate Xxxx, who may in exceptional circumstances and following consultation with the Chair of the Department concerned, assign to Employees those courses they are to teach.
17.01.4 The University may adopt policies for minimum class size, and advise students and Employees that courses with enrolments below specified levels may not be offered. Where enrolment in a course is below specified levels, the appropriate Xxxx shall consult with the Department Chair. In these circumstances, the Department Chair shall make a recommendation based on academic program requirements to the appropriate Xxxx on whether or not courses should be cancelled and any related reassignment of teaching duties. Authority to make reassignments rests with the appropriate Xxxx, who may in exceptional circumstances and following consultation with the Chair of the Department concerned, reassign to Employees those courses they are to teach.
17.01.5 The time and place for each course are determined by the appropriate University authority. Reasonable requests by Employees for scheduling shall be accommodated where possible, if received before the annual timetable is finalized.
17.01.6 Where possible, and upon request by an Employee, the scheduling of courses shall permit an Employee to have one (1) Day per week for research during which he or she is not expected to teach scheduled classes.
Assignment of Teaching. Each Department Chair shall ordinarily assign those courses within the Department in which its academic staff teach. In so doing, the Department Chair is responsible for ensuring that there is an equitable distribution of teaching workload among Members of the Department, including undergraduate courses, graduate courses where possible, small seminars, thesis supervisions, reading courses, and student- teacher ratio. There shall be appropriate prior consultation with Members, and with the Chair or delegate of the corresponding University of Waterloo department or program, where applicable, on the assignment of teaching duties.
Assignment of Teaching. 8.4.1 In consultation with a Member’s department chair the appropriate Xxxx shall assign to each Member specific teaching‐related responsibilities, which shall include courses to be taught and other teaching duties and may include supervisory and administrative responsibilities.
Assignment of Teaching. (a) Department Chairs, in consultation with their departmental members, shall submit a teaching assignment recommendation for each departmental Member to the VPAD. In the case of Chairs and Librarian Members, the Associate Xxxx shall, in consultation with the Librarian or Chair, submit a teaching assignment recommendation to the VPAD. Chairs shall consult appropriately with the Chair or delegate of the corresponding University of Waterloo department or program, where applicable, on the assignment of teaching duties.
(b) The VPAD shall assign courses to Members after a consideration of the teaching assignment recommendation. In so doing, the VPAD shall ensure that there is an equitable distribution of teaching workload across the University and among Members of the Department. The VPAD’s consideration of equitable distributions of workload shall include but not be limited to the following: number of undergraduate courses, number of graduate courses, where applicable, student-teacher ratios, number of thesis supervisions, number of graduate student supervisions, and number of directed readings courses, field courses, experiential learning courses, or other forms of teaching as defined in Article 25.
2.1. The VPAD shall consult appropriately with the SJU Chair on the assignment of teaching duties.

(a) Department Chairs, in consultation with their departmental members, shall submit a teaching assignment recommendation for each Member to the VPAD, in accordance with the timeline designated by the VPAD. Chairs may consult appropriately with the Chair or delegate of a corresponding University of Waterloo department or program, where applicable, on the assignment of teaching duties.
(b) Department Chairs shall assign courses to Members after submitting recommendations to the VPAD, who may approve, deny or modify the recommended teaching assignments after consultation with the relevant Chair.
Assignment of Teaching. Academic and Administrative Duties and Responsibilities Among Faculty Members
57.4.1 The Chair of a Department (Xxxx in the case of non-departmentalized Faculty) has the responsibility for assigning the duties and responsibilities specified in Article 57.1.1 (other than scholarship and research) and

Assignment of Teaching. The assignment of faculty to courses is the responsibility of the Xxxx and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
a. Full-time faculty are given first preference for selection of courses to satisfy their contractual load.
b. A faculty member’s base load shall consist of at least fifty (50) percent face-to-face credit hours per semester (with hybrid courses counting as ½ face-to-face). A faculty member may request an exception in online load using the Faculty Exception for Online Course Request Form, see Appendix E. The form should be submitted to the appropriate academic xxxx by September 15 for the upcoming spring semester and February 15 for the upcoming fall semester. A written response, via email, of approval or denial will be given within ten (10) business days of the submittal. In special circumstances, the Vice President of Academic Affairs or designee may request an exception to the online load in the best interest of the schedule or College. Faculty who are contractually online-only instructors are exempt from this guideline.
c. Full-time faculty may be required to teach evening courses, online courses, or at any campus location in order to meet their contractual load.
d. Every effort shall be made to schedule regular teaching load courses within a six-hour workday. No faculty member shall be required to teach on more than five (5) days per week as part of a regular teaching assignment.
e. No faculty member shall be required to work during any non-contractual period unless the faculty member is assigned extra duty work for which they are compensated.
i. Off-contract work refers to institutional-wide required work such as participating in hiring committees, institutional standing committees (for example, Budget Committee, Shared Governance Council, Strategic Plan Implementation, and other institutional or academic committees) whose charge/mission requires faculty input and work during off-contract time periods including, but not limited to, summer and winter session. Compensation for off-contract work will be based on time commitments.
f. Normal Teaching Load/Credit Hours for full-time faculty shall consist of fifteen (15) credit hours per semester or thirty (30) credit hours per academic year.
