Education Leave and Examinations. (a) The Board agrees that it is to the mutual benefit of the employer and the employee to improve the educational standards of the work force. Accordingly, the Board agrees that employees with five (5) years employment in a continuing appointment who wish to further their education shall be permitted up to one (1) year of unpaid education leave. Any benefits based on service shall be retained and accumulated. The employee shall be placed in a position equivalent to that which he or she held prior to the education leave. Ten (10) months service in a ten (10) month position is one year of service in a continuing appointment(s) for the purpose of this article.
(b) An employee shall be entitled to leave of absence with pay and without loss of benefits to write examinations to upgrade his or her employment qualifications for job related courses.

Where employees are required by the Employer to take courses to upgrade or acquire new employment qualifications, the Employer shall pay the full costs associated with the courses. Subject to operational requirements, the Employer will make every reasonable effort to grant requests for necessary changes to an employee’s schedule to enable attendance at a recognized upgrading course or seminar related to employment with the Employer.

(a) Subject to operational requirements and availability of qualified replacement staff, an employee shall be granted unpaid educational leave of the amount requested not exceeding two (2) years unless mutually agreed between the employee and the Employer. 13.1 The Employer agrees that it is to the mutual benefit of the Employer and the Employee to improve the educational standards of the workforce.
13.1.1 Accordingly, the Employer agrees that Employees with five (5) years employment, who wish to further their education, may be permitted up to one (1) year of education leave. A request for education leave shall not be unreasonably denied. Any benefits based on service and seniority shall be retained but not accumulated. The Employee shall be placed in a position equivalent to that which they held prior to the education leave.
13.1.2 When the Employer requests an Employee to attend a course the Employer will pay one hundred per cent (100%) of the cost of registration.
13.1.3 When the Employer requests an Employee to attend a course related to political education or job skills, the Employer will pay one hundred per cent (100%) of the cost upon registration.
13.1.4 When an Employee requests the approval of the Employer to attend a course (such course shall be related to work) and the Employer agrees, the Employer will pay one hundred per cent (100%) of the cost of registration. The reimbursement will be made as follows: fifty per cent (50%) upon registration, and fifty per cent (50%) upon successful completion of the course. The appropriateness of the course shall be determined by the Employer. Once determined, approval will not be unreasonably withheld.
13.1.5 In the event an Employee attends an educational course as specified above, and that day is other than Monday to Friday, then a compensating day off with pay shall be granted and taken by the Employee immediately preceding or succeeding the day of the attendance of such course or at such other time as is mutually agreed upon between the Employer and the Employee.
13.2 An Employee shall be entitled to leave of absence with pay and without loss of seniority and benefits to write examinations to up-grade their employment qualifications.

Accordingly, an employee may request an unpaid leave of absence to write examinations which directly upgrade his/her employment qualifications. Such leave of absence shall be without loss of seniority and benefits.
Education Leave and Examinations. THE UHC AGREES THAT IT IS TO THE MUTUAL BENEFIT OF THE UHC AND THE EMPLOYEE TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS OF THE WORKFORCE. ACCORDINGLY, THE UHC AGREES THAT EMPLOYEES WITH TWO (2) YEARS EMPLOYMENT, WHO WISH TO FURTHER THEIR EDUCATION, SHALL BE PERMITTED UP TO ONE (1) YEAR OF EDUCATION LEAVE WITHOUT PAY AND WITH LOSS OF SENIORITY FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME OFF. QUALIFICATIONS FOR BENEFITS SHALL BE THE SAME AS ARTICLE 13.05. AN EMPLOYEE SHALL BE ENTITLED TO LEAVE OF ABSENCE WITHOUT PAY AND WITHOUT LOSS OF SENIORITY AND BENEFITS TO WRITE EXAMINATIONS TO UPGRADE HIS/HER EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS. SHOULD AN EMPLOYEE ELECT TO FURTHER THEIR EDUCATION, THE UHC WILL REIMBURSE 100% OF THE TUITION COST UP TO A MAXIMUM OF $300.00 PER ANNUM IF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS ARE MET:
A) EMPLOYEE MUST RECEIVE APPROVAL FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PRIOR TO ENROLLING;
B) THE EDUCATION MUST BE RELEVANT TO AND WITHIN THE PARAMETERS OF; THE DAILY OPERATIONS, POSITIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES REPRESENTED BY THE UHC;
C) EMPLOYEE MUST COMPLETE AND PASS THE COURSE.
Education Leave and Examinations. The Employer agrees that it is to the mutual benefit of the Employer and the employee to improve the educational standards of the workforce. Therefore, subject to operational requirements, where an employee has been approved by the Employer to take a course, special leave with pay, will be granted for the writing of examinations by that employee if the examinations are held during that individual’s normally scheduled working hours.
