Substitute Coverage. A unit member on leave for illness or injury, and where a substitute has been employed, shall not be allowed to return to work and shall be continued on sick leave for the following day if he/she fails to notify the division xxxx by 3 p.m. of the day preceding the day the member intends to return to work.

Substitute Coverage. Any regular school clerk assistant assigned in a school clerk I position for a period of twenty consecutive school days shall be paid at the appropriate step of the school clerk I salary schedule, effective on the twenty-first consecutive school day. Upon the assignment or transfer of a regular school clerk I to said position, the school clerk assistant shall revert to the former pay status as a school clerk assistant.

Substitute Coverage. (A) Employees may prearrange a specific substitute teacher for his/her planned absence. A good-faith effort will be made to honor this prearrangement. (B) The District shall investigate options for increasing the number of available substitutes through: 1. use of emergency substitute certificates; 2. offering health insurance coverage to substitute teachers; 3. increasing professional development opportunities for substitutes; and 4. recruiting retired teachers through a more attractive compensation package. (C) Teachers at the elementary level shall set up their own personal plan for coverage of their classes when a substitute is unavailable. All plans will be subject to administrator’s approval. The leadership team at each school building shall develop a plan for exceptional circumstances not covered by individual teachers’ plans. Options include, but are not limited to, rotating classes, pulling specialists and LSTs, and using Para-Educators to supervise students. Plans shall prioritize use of volunteers first, and use of involuntary reassignments of staff or students second. (D) Teachers at the secondary level whose classes are not covered by a substitute will be covered by teachers on their planning periods. Covering teachers will first be recruited on a voluntary basis, and then assigned. Current substitutes will be utilized first. (E) Teachers shall be compensated at the rate of $20/hour when covering a class in lieu of planning time or covering another full class of students in addition to their own. Teachers shall be compensated at the rate of $10/hour when covering half or less of another class students in addition to their own. Compensation shall be rounded up to the nearest quarter hour.

The District shall make a reasonable good faith effort to hire regular substitute teachers when classroom, teachers are absent through no cause created by the District or approved in advance by the District. If, however, the District is unable to find a regular substitute for any absent teacher, the Principal for the school in question shall ask for a volunteer(s) to cover the absent teacher’s class(es). Volunteers shall be paid for substituting on a trimester/semester basis during the school year: a. At the middle and high school levels, the volunteer teacher shall receive one‐fifth of the pay of the daily substitute rate per period taught at least ten (10) minutes of time per period must be spent substituting before pay will be provided for that period. b. At the elementary level, the volunteer teacher(s) shall be paid when no substitutes are available for one‐half day or more. The students from the absent teacher’s class shall be equitably distributed among the volunteers appointed by the Principal. The teacher volunteer(s) receiving the students shall equally divide the prevailing daily substitute teacher rate of pay. c. In the case where no one, or an insufficient number of teachers volunteer, under either Section a or b above, a teacher or teachers shall be appointed by the Principal to provide substitute coverage, on an equitable basis, and on the same pay basis as enumerated for volunteers above. d. No Special Education Teacher shall be expected to provide substitute coverage for any absent regular teacher’s classroom, except on a strictly voluntary basis.

If, however, the District is unable to find a regular substitute for any absent teacher, the Principal for the school in question shall ask for a volunteer(s) to cover the absent teacher’s class(es). a. At the middle and high school levels, the volunteer unit member that provides period coverage due to an unfilled absence or for participating in an Individualized Education Program (IEP), 504, CAPSS, or SST shall be compensated at fifty-two dollars and fifty cents ($52.50) per period for at least ten (10) minutes of time. 1. During block schedule (SBAC testing), any unit member providing period coverage will be compensated at twice the amount of the regular period coverage rate. 2. During finals at the high school level, any unit member providing period coverage will be compensated at twice the amount of the regular period sub coverage rate. b. At the elementary level, the volunteer unit member(s) shall be paid when no substitutes are available for one hour or more. The students from the absent teacher’s class shall be equitably distributed among the volunteers appointed by the Principal. The unit member(s) receiving the students shall equally divide divide two hundred and sixty two and fifty cents ($262.50) total. c. Unit members including TOSAs and counselors, who do not have a rostered class list, shall be compensated at the rate of pay as specified in 1(a) and 1(b) depending on the grade levels they service. d. In the case where no one, or an insufficient number of teachers volunteer, under either Section a or b above, a teacher or teachers shall be appointed by the Principal to provide substitute coverage, on an equitable basis, and on the same pay basis as enumerated for volunteers above. e. No Special Education Teacher shall be expected to provide substitute coverage for any absent regular teacher’s classroom, except on a strictly voluntary basis.
Substitute Coverage. It is the responsibility of the assigned faculty member to meet each class for the complete period and days scheduled. When personal or family illness or approved assigned duty elsewhere prevents the faculty member from meeting the scheduled class, it is the faculty member’s responsibility to obtain supervisory approval of any substitute or alternative assignment whenever practical or reasonable. Prior approval must be given by the appropriate administrator for substitute coverage. If the absence exceeds the equivalent of one week’s instruction, as determined by the immediate supervisor, the supervisor will provide for class coverage.
