Christmas Shutdown. The Employer shall notify all bargaining unit employees no later than December 15th, of each year as to the designated dates for Christmas Shutdown. Where December 15th falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the specific days will be designated on the following Monday. Employees shall have the following options: (a) Take shutdown days as five (5) vacation days; OR (b) Take shutdown days as an approved unpaid leave of absence.

Christmas Shutdown. (a) For the Christmas Shutdown period, as identified in 16.01, a level up to sixty percent (60%) of regular staffing in all departments/classifications, excluding I.T. (b) A notice will be posted and the employees can volunteer to make a commitment to work the days indicated. The Company will attempt to achieve its minimum staffing levels on a voluntary basis, failing which we will achieve our minimum levels with the lowest seniority people who are able to provide the necessary service. Efforts will be made to move or transfer influx volunteers to other classifications who have the skill and ability to mitigate force ins by seniority. (c) For departments listed in 16.08 (a), which have Bilingual posted roles, up to sixty percent (60%) is to be maintained in both the English and Bilingual positions. (d) When possible flex-time hours will be honoured during shutdown. (e) The Company agrees to not include December 24th as a necessary date to provide these services. (f) The employee will be given a choice to be compensated for all hours worked on any of the dates defined below as follows: (i) The employee can be paid at the rate of one time their base hourly rate in addition to their holiday pay for the day plus they will be given a day off in lieu of the holiday; or (ii) The employee can be paid at a rate of two times their base hourly rate in addition to their holiday pay for the day. (g) The applicable days of the Christmas Shutdown will be determined by September 1st of each respective year. (h) Employees will be offered the opportunity to work Christmas Shutdown. Those who fail to respond by the deadline provided, after receiving a reminder, will be deemed to be working the Christmas Shutdown and will be compensated according to (f) (ii) above (i) Employee selection sheets will be available no later than October 15th at 11:59 a.m. Employees will make their selection to work Christmas Shutdown by seniority, no later than the last Friday in October at 11:59 a.m. Those required to work, will be notified in writing no later than the third Friday in November by 11:59 a.m. The schedule will be posted to those required to work no later than the first Friday in December at 11:59 a. m. Christmas Shutdown. All Plan offices will be closed from December 24th at 1:00 p.m. to January 1st inclusive. Any employee required to work during this time shall be compensated at the rate of double time.

Christmas Shutdown. Each year at Christmas time the business may shut down for a period of time. This allows employees to have a long break and also provides an opportunity to conduct maintenance activity or improvements during this time. During such closedown, employees agree to take annual leave, Long Service Leave or access TOIL credits if available. If none of these provisions are available to the employee, unpaid leave will be granted. The Company will provide employees with no less than 6 weeks notice of proposed shutdown dates associated with Christmas Shutdown.
