Eligibility for Tenure. As stipulated by law RCW 28B.50.851, tenure shall be granted only to full-time academic employee appointments. The Board of Trustees, acting as the appointing authority, shall provide for the award of academic employee tenure upon one (1) of the following conditions: 1. A probationary period not to exceed successful completion of nine (9) consecutive regular college quarters, excluding summer quarters and approved leaves of absence; or 2. Upon formal recommendation of the review committee and with the written consent of the candidate, the appointing authority may extend its probationary period for one (1), two (2), or three (3) quarters, excluding summer quarter, beyond the maximum probationary period established herein. No such extension shall be made, however, unless the review committee’s recommendation is based on its belief that the candidate needs additional time to complete satisfactorily a written plan of action already in progress and in the committee’s further belief that the candidate will complete the plan satisfactorily. At the conclusion of any such extension, the appointing authority may award tenure unless the candidate has, in the judgment of the committee, failed to complete the professional improvement plan satisfactorily; or 3. Any academic employee employed full-time in a temporary academic employee appointment, and subsequently full-time in a probationary appointment, both of whose terms total nine (9) consecutive regular college quarters, excluding summer quarters and approved leaves of absence; provided that tenure may be awarded at any time as may be determined by the appointing authority after it has given reasonable consideration to the recommendations of the Appointment Review Committee.

Eligibility for Tenure. 7.7.1.1 The total period of full-time service at WWU prior to the acquisition of tenure shall not exceed seven (7) years of probationary service except in cases below. Faculty shall be evaluated for tenure not later than the sixth Fall Quarter of service (or as amended by extensions described below). Maternity leave with or without pay automatically receives the extension. This extension is also available, upon application to the President or the President’s designee, to those who would otherwise be eligible but who choose not to take a leave of absence. ii. Faculty who take compassionate leave or military leave or who have significant circumstances that can be shown to have severely disrupted the faculty member’s ability to fulfill departmental standards for tenure can request this type of extension which must be approved by the President or the President’s designee. 7.7.1.2 Faculty may apply for tenure and promotion prior to the sixth year of their probationary period if they have established a record of accomplishment that meets departmental standards for teaching, scholarship, and service, based upon their annual probationary reviews. 7.7.1.3 When a candidate applies for tenure and/or promotion, all relevant experience will be considered. All candidates must demonstrate a record of accomplishment at the University.
Eligibility for Tenure. Tenure with Promotion, and Promotion: Faculty members with consistently outstanding performance in all appropriate areas, as defined in the Department and College Promotion Guidelines, since the last promotion or initial appointment are eligible to apply for early promotion before the completion of the years of service stated below with the exceptions described herein. The evaluation of the candidate for promotion to Senior Lecturer will be based upon the department’s expectations for promotion as outlined in the department Governance Document and the College’s Guidelines for Promotion. The process and procedures for the review of applicants for promotion will follow those outlined in Articles 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, and 10.12.

Eligibility for Tenure. ‌ Unless exceptional circumstances relating to the criteria for granting tenure prevail in a particular case, the normal time in the rank of Assistant Professor to be eligible for being granted tenure is five years in rank. Time in rank alone shall not be a criterion for the granting of tenure.
Eligibility for Tenure. (a) A faculty member holding a probationary appointment shall be considered for tenure during her/his fifth year of service in a tenure-track position, but may be considered after fewer than four entire years of service as follows: (i) Any faculty member holding the rank of associate or full professor, or who held a tenured appointment at another institution immediately prior to her/his present appointment, shall become eligible to apply for tenure after one year of service. (ii) Any faculty member holding the rank of assistant professor or lecturer shall become eligible to apply for tenure after three years of service. (iii) Notwithstanding the above, any faculty member having two years or more of full-time university teaching experience elsewhere shall become eligible to apply for tenure after two years of full-time teaching, or its equivalent, at Algoma University. (b) In the above, full-time teaching shall not include periods of leave under Articles 18:02, 18:04 and 18:05, but will include service as Divisional Chair under Article 6:05 (c). (c) A new appointment may be made with tenure in accordance with Article 11:02. (d) Unless otherwise outlined in a Librarian Faculty Member’s appointment letter, references to teaching responsibilities in Articles 15-16 do not apply to Librarian Faculty Members presenting for review.

At the discretion of the Board of Trustees, tenure may be awarded at any time before the nine (9) quarters have expired. Under these circumstances the decision will be rendered by the granting authority after it has given reasonable consideration to the independent recommendations of both the College President and the Tenure Review Committee.
