EMPLOYEE IMPROVEMENT. 1. An employee required by the administration to attend a workshop or take specialized training shall have her/his enrollment fee, materials and mileage paid by the Board. When such training requires an overnight stay, necessary expenses for room and meals shall also be paid only if previously approved by the Board. Regular wage shall be paid for such attendance or training, whether it is within or outside the employee’s normal workday.
2. If an employee is required to attend training sessions outside the normal workday, she/he will be paid her/his hourly rate for the time spent during such training.
3. Employees may enroll in the Lapeer Community Schools enrichment program for courses that would directly relate to their employment with the school district, provided that:
a. Enrollment in such courses must have prior approval of the Central Office;
b. Fees for approved courses shall be paid by the Board of Education;
a. Courses shall be limited to one (1) per semester;
b. Request for approval must be made, in writing, stating course and fees and meeting nights at least two (2) weeks in advance of the first meeting.
EMPLOYEE IMPROVEMENT. A. The District will reimburse employees for Professional Development on Microsoft products. The employee must take the approved skills test for the class and meet the rubric established for Level #13 new hires to qualify for reimbursement.
B. The employee may also request approval for other Professional Development by his/her supervisor. No hourly rate will be reimbursed if taken outside regular work hours.
C. Professional Development at the employer’s request will be reimbursed at the employee’s hourly rate if approved to be taken outside regular work hours.
D. Should District-wide Professional Development occur outside of regular working hours, employees shall be reimbursed at the appropriate hourly rate.
E. The Board will pay enrollment fees for four (4) employees, with a maximum of ten (10) days total each year, desiring to attend workshops, in-service training sessions, or statewide conventions. His/her regular salary shall continue during the workshop-training period. The Association reserves the right to assign employees wishing to attend sessions.
F. In the event Professional Development involving all employees is being planned by the District, every effort will be made to inform the Association and to reach mutual agreement on a JESA member for inclusion, should a committee be formed for this purpose. Professional Development planned for employees with Association involvement shall be mandatory for attendance, with any exceptions to be approved by the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Secondary Curriculum.
G. Employees may enroll in appropriate colleges or educational facilities for courses that would directly relate to their employment with the School District. Fees for approved classes shall be paid for by the Board of Education after evidence of satisfactory completion. (See Appendix E)

Whenever teacher workshops pertain in any way to the teaching of math or reading, or in any other way in which paraprofessionals are involved with students, paraprofessionals shall be included. In cases where employees agree to attend a workshop or take additional specialized training at the specific request of the Board, their enrollment fees will be paid and their regular salary shall continue during the workshop or training period. Employees required to attend a workshop or take specialized training shall have their enrollment fee, materials and mileage paid by the Board when such training takes place outside the Jackson area, necessary expense for room and meals shall also be paid by the Board. 5. Paraprofessionals will receive notice of any credit or non-credit courses being made available to other employees of Xxxxxxx Public Schools.
6. Fees for approved courses shall be paid by the Board if a grade of "C" or better is obtained in the course and a transcript of such grade/credit is furnished to the Human Resources Office.
C. Any position that requires additional training shall be provided by the Board.
D. The Board will make every attempt to provide necessary training and guidelines for temporary or substitute employees.
E. Each school year, an in-service program will be provided prior to the first day of instruction. This program will acquaint bargaining unit members with discipline procedures that will be used:
1. The student handbook will be thoroughly reviewed and explained outlining the paraprofessional's role. This will be a meeting of all paraprofessionals. Each paraprofessional will receive the handbook.
2. In a meeting of the building's paraprofessionals, rules and procedures for that building will be explained. Also, student penalties for violations of them will be made clear.

1. Prior to formal or informal disciplinary procedures being employed in cases of minor misconduct or in cases where the behavior or poor performance does not constitute a serious infraction of the contract, district policies, rules or directives of superiors, the school district may, in its discretion, attempt to improve an employee’s performance and/or correct an employee’s behavior by implementing a non-disciplinary Letter of Expectation/Non- Disciplinary Written Directive or a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). Subd. 2. The purpose of a non-disciplinary Letter of Expectation/Non-Disciplinary Written Directive or a performance improvement plan is to improve the employee’s performance up to the standards and expectations of the school district. This could include additional training or other supports. Should the employee fail to raise their level of performance to the school district’s expectations, or the behavior issues continue the school district may resort to the disciplinary measures delineated in Section 2 of this Article.
