Xxxx Leave Usage. The department head or designee shall approve sick leave only after having ascertained that the absence is for an authorized reason. In cases where an absence is in excess of two (2) consecutive working days, where a pattern of excessive or abusive sick leave usage is observed, or where the State reasonably believes that sick leave has been requested for reasons other than defined in this 50 BU 19 (01-03) Article, the employee's supervisor may require substantiating evidence, including but not limited to, a physicians' certificate. If the appointing power does not consider the evidence adequate, the request for sick leave shall be disapproved.
Xxxx Leave Usage. The department head or designee may require the employee to submit a physician's or licensed practitioner's certificate if:
1. The employee is absent on sick leave for more than two (2) consecutive work days; or
2. Where the supervisor has good cause to believe the employee's use of sick leave is improper.

Sick leave usage may be taken in units of not less than one-fourth (1/4) the employee's normal work day rounded to the next one (1) hour unit to a maximum of the number of hours the employee is scheduled to work on the day off work, except for bus drivers who may take sick leave in units of one-third (1/3) day.
Xxxx Leave Usage. 1. Sick leave accrual, if available, will be used for the following circumstances:
a. the absence from duty of an employee because of his/her illness, pregnancy or related complications; quarantine due to contagious disease.
b. The absence from duty of an employee due to the preventative care, diagnosis, care or treatment of a health condition of the employee’s family member or other purposes authorized by Labor Codes Section 246.5 (leave for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking). For the purposes of this provision, family member shall be restricted to the employee’s biological parent, xxxxxx parent, adoptive parent, sibling, spouse, domestic partner, child, parent-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, stepparents, stepchildren, step sibling, where there is a child rearing relationship, or a person who stood in loco parentis when the employee was a minor child.
c. the medical appointment of an employee.
x. the absence from duty of an employee due to the medical appointment or illness of his/her spouse, domestic partner, child, or parent to the extent provided by California Law (specifically, AB 109, known as the “Kin Care” legislation effective in 2000, and SB 1471, as enacted in 2003)
2. If absence from duty by reason of sickness extends beyond the period of two (2) work shifts (48 hours), the officer or employee may be required to provide, to the Fire Chief or his/her designee, a verification of sickness or disability prepared by a regular, licensed and practicing physician prior to entitlement to sick leave pay. All employees whose absence from duty because of sickness extends beyond two (2) calendar weeks shall cause a weekly report or certificate by a regular licensed and practicing physician to be filed with the Fire Chief or his designee. Certificates filed under this section shall detail the nature of the sickness and certify the employee’s inability to return to work. If no certificate is filed, salary or wages may be withheld from employee. The Fire Chief or his designee may require any employee to furnish a certificate of illness or disability completed by a regular, licensed and practicing physician at any time that the Fire Chief is aware of information that an employee is abusing sick leave. Xxxx Leave Usage. 1. A deduction shall be made from accumulated sick leave credits of all working days absent with pay due to illness, except those resulting from an accident on the job, for which the employee is covered by Workers' Compensation.

An employee shall not be required to provide a physician's or other verification of sick leave when he/she uses two (2) consecutive days or less of sick leave except when:
1. The employee has a demonstrable pattern of sick leave usage constituting abuse when compared to other employees at the work site; or
2. The supervisor has a clear, articulable belief that the sick leave absence was for an unauthorized reason.
Xxxx Leave Usage. Except as hereinafter provided, sick leave pay is granted only by the appointing authority and only in case of:
1. Employee absence required by their bona fide illness or injury causing inability to work.
2. Exposure to contagious disease requiring quarantine.
3. To obtain a diagnosis, consultation, care or treatment of an existing health condition, or the preventive care, for the Employee or for an Employee’s family member as provided for pursuant to Labor Code section 246.5.
4. An Employee who is a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking as provided by Labor Code section 246.5.
Xxxx Leave Usage. A pregnant employee shall be permitted to use any or all of the employee’s accumulated sick leave credit only for the period of time, as certified by the physician’s certificate that the employee is unable to work as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. An employee using sick leave credit shall not be prevented from receiving a leave of absence without pay for the remainder of the period as certified by a physician.
Xxxx Leave Usage. Effective the first pay period of calendar year 2021, and superseding provisions in the Salary Resolution, Personnel Ordinance, and/or legislative requirements. The City will expand the usage of sick leave accruals as follows: In conjunction with a protected and/or extended medical leave of absence (i.e. FMLA, PDL, CFRA, etc.) and in addition to the usage of sick leave accruals, when an employee is personally ill or disabled, they shall be entitled to use any available earned sick leave accruals for an absence from duty for personal medical appointments or to attend to his/her ill, eligible family member. Catastrophic Leave donations for eligible employees will only be allowed in circumstances where an employee has exhausted all available leave accruals, and are no longer covered by STD or LTD, if applicable, whether the donations are requested to cover a personal or family related illness.
Xxxx Leave Usage. 1. Sick leave shall be charged in increments of not less than one half hour.
