Authorized Uses of Sick Leave. Subject to the terms and limitations of this Section, sick leave with pay may be used by bargaining unit employees for the following reasons: (1) an employee's personal illness or physical incapacity; (2) the illness or physical incapacity of a member of the employee's household or immediate family that requires the presence of the employee; (3) medical or dental appointments or essential preventive medical procedures that cannot be scheduled during non-working hours; (4) the quarantine of the employee due to his own or a member of the employee's household's medical condition; (5) the birth, adoption, or initial placement for xxxxxx care with an employee, of a child; and (6) care for an employee's child within the twelve (12) months following the child's birth, adoption by the employee, or initial placement with the employee for xxxxxx care, which care is not immediately related to the illness or disability of that child.

Authorized Uses of Sick Leave. A. Accrued sick leave must be used for any absence by a regular employee because of his or her own illness, and may be used for the employee's diagnosis, care, or treatment of an existing health condition, or preventative care. B. An employee may take a maximum total of up to six days (48 hours) of the employee’s accrued sick leave per calendar year for the diagnosis, care or treatment of an existing health condition or preventative care for their child, parent, parent-in-law, spouse, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, or domestic partner. This time will be prorated for part-time and extra help employees but will never be less than twenty-four (24) hours in one year. C. A regular employee must use accrued sick leave (and/or accrued vacation) during any period of the employee’s own approved pregnancy disability leave. D. A regular employee must use accrued sick leave (and/or accrued vacation) during any approved special leave of absence for that employee. X. A regular employee may take up to three (3) days of bereavement leave per calendar year if there is a death in his/her immediate family (husband, wife, parent, brother, sister, child, grandparent, grandchild, parent-in-law, domestic partner, domestic partner’s child). These days will not be subtracted from sick leave or any other leave accruals the employee may have. The employee is entitled take an additional two days of bereavement leave which will be subtracted from their sick leave balances. X. A regular employee may use accrued sick leave to attend pre-scheduled medical or dental appointments, provided the employee obtained advance approval from his or her supervisor to attend such appointment. G. Under no circumstances is sick leave to be used as a means to take vacation. Sick leave may not be used when the employee is otherwise in unpaid status. Nor may sick leave be used on a date and at a time when the employee had previously been granted time off using vacation or other accruals, without the express approval of the employee’s supervisor. H. Accrued sick leave may also be used for any absence by any employee who is a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, because of his or her own need, related to such experiences, to receive: (1) medical attention for injuries; (2) services from a domestic violence shelter, program, or crisis center; (3) psychological counseling; (4) services related to safety planning; (5) or to seek a restraining order or other judicial relief related to su...

Related to Authorized Uses of Sick Leave

  • Uses of Sick Leave a. Sick leave shall be accrued before being taken, provided that an employee who participates in a sick leave pool shall not be prohibited from using sick leave otherwise available to the employee through the sick leave pool. b. Sick leave shall be authorized for the following: i. The employee's personal illness or exposure to a contagious disease, which would endanger others. ii. The employee's personal appointments with a health care provider. iii. The illness or injury of a member of the employee's immediate family, at the discretion of the supervisor. Approval of requests for use of reasonable amounts of sick leave for caring for a member of the employee's immediate family shall not be unreasonably withheld. "Immediate family" means the spouse and the grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, children, and grandchildren of both the employee and the spouse, and dependents living in the household.

  • Use of Sick Leave Sick leave is available the first day of the pay period following the pay period in which it was earned, and is taken in units of one-tenth (1/10) of one hour. Use of sick leave is subject to the approval of the appointing authority. Upon request of an employee, the appointing authority may allow the substitution of three (3) or more days of sick leave for paid vacation, provided the employee furnishes a doctor's statement or other satisfactory evidence that the employee was ill or injured for three (3) or more consecutive days.

  • Abuse of Sick Leave Misuse of leave, violation of orders, directives, or contractual requirements concerning the use of sick leave and other forms of leave used in lieu of sick leave are cause for disciplinary action.

  • Verification of Sick Leave The appointing officer or designee to whom application for sick leave is made may make such independent investigation as to the necessity for sick leave as is deemed proper and may require certification for any period of sick leave, provided that the employee has been previously notified in writing that such certification for absence of less than five working days shall be required. The Human Resources Director may at any time make such independent investigation as may be deemed proper regarding the illness of any person on sick leave.

  • Reporting of Sick Leave The employee will call in sick or returning in accordance with Article 14.05 to the designated employer for purposes of payment. For purposes of notification of absence, the employee will notify the appropriate home in accordance with Article 14.05 of their absence that shift.

  • Reinstatement of Vacation Days - Sick Leave In the event an employee is sick or injured prior to the commencement of his/her vacation, such employee shall be granted sick leave and the vacation period so displaced shall be added to the vacation period if requested by the employee and by mutual agreement, or shall be reinstated for use at a later date.

  • Personal/Xxxxx’s Leave 7.3.1 All full time employees shall be entitled to accrue paid personal / xxxxx's leave on the basis of 10 days per year (or pro-rata thereof for any period less than one year). Part-time employees are entitled to a pro-rata benefit. Paid personal / carer's leave is cumulative. 7.3.2 All accrued personal leave shall be available for use as carer's leave in accordance with the provisions outlined below. 7.3.3 As part of its commitment to provide a family-friendly workplace, the employer will allow employees to use any amount of accrued personal /xxxxx's leave to enable employees to: (a) provide primary care to partners, children and/or other household or family members. (b) attend the funerals of family or household members or close family relatives (if compassionate leave is not available in the circumstances). 7.3.4 The leave provided for in this clause will be granted subject to the following: (a) The employee must notify the employer of the reason and likely duration of the absence before 7.00 am on the first day of the absence, unless this is not possible due to an unexpected emergency in which case the employee must notify the employer as soon as practicable. (b) Where circumstances permit, an employee must endeavour to arrange leave to minimise the impact on operational needs. (c) The provision of appropriate documentary evidence. 1. For sick leave, a medical certificate or if not reasonably practicable to provide a medical certificate- a statutory declaration made by the employee. 2. For xxxxx's leave, a medical certificate in respect to the family or household member, or a statutory declaration by the employee. 3. For compassionate leave, any evidence that the employer reasonably requires. 7.3.5 The employee is not entitled to take more than 10 days of paid xxxxx’s leave (1/26th of the nominal hours worked by the employee) per year, regardless of the amount of personal leave the employee has accumulated over time. 7.3.6 An employee may request to cash out any amount of paid personal/xxxxx’s leave that they have accrued that is excess of 3/52 of the number of nominal hours worked over the past 12 months. For example, an employee working 38 hours per week over 12 months must retain 15 days of paid personal/carer’s leave and may cash out any further personal/carer’s leave that has been accumulated. 7.3.7 In addition to the above, a request to cash out personal/xxxxx’s leave will only be granted where: (a) the employee elects to cash out their leave in writing; and (b) the employer agrees. 7.3.8 Casual Employees engaged in continuous service shall be entitled to personal leave limited to the provision of sub clause 7.3.

  • General Leave of Absence a) Leave of absence without pay may be granted to employees for valid reasons as set out by Company policy. b) An employee on general leave of absence shall not accumulate sick leave credits, or earn vacation but shall retain the seniority, sick leave credits, and vacation credits earned prior to commencing leave of absence. c) Employees do not have the option of continuing their benefit coverage during the leave. d) Employees on leave of absence shall be required to apply for any extension.

  • Granting of Sick Leave An employee shall be granted sick leave with pay when he or she is unable to perform his or her duties because of illness or injury provided that:

  • Personal/Carer’s Leave 18.1 Entitlement to paid personal/carer’s leave a) Paid personal leave will be available to an Employee (other than casual Employees) when they are absent due to: (i) personal illness or injury (sick leave); or (ii) for the purposes of caring for an immediate family or household member who is sick and requires the Employee's care and support (carer's leave). b) The amount of personal leave to which an Employee is entitled is as follows: (i) Upon commencement of employment Employees will automatically be credited with 5 days Personal and/or Xxxxx’s leave. After 6 months of employment, the leave will begin to accrue progressively up until it reaches 10 days at the conclusion of 12 months employment. (ii) Once the Employee has completed one year of continuous employment, the Employee shall be credited with a further ten days personal leave entitlement at the beginning of the Employee's second and subsequent year, which subject to clause 18.1(f) hereof, shall commence on the anniversary of engagement. c) In any year unused personal leave accrues. d) An Employee will inform the Company of the Employee's inability to attend for duty, and need to take personal leave, as soon as practicable. e) An Employee shall prove to the Company's satisfaction that the Employee’s Personal/Xxxxx’s leave is/was justified. Such evidence may be a medical practitioner’s certificate, or a statutory declaration. An Employee will not be required to provide such evidence for single days of absence but only where two or more consecutive days of absence are taken. f) If an Employee’s employment is terminated by the Company and is re-engaged within a period of six months, then the Employee's unclaimed balance of sick leave shall continue from the date of re-engagement. In such case the Employee's next year of service will commence after a total of twelve months has been served with that Company excluding the period of interruption in service from the date of commencement of the previous period of employment or the anniversary of the commencement of the previous period of employment, as the case may be. g) Unpaid carer’s leave will be in accordance with the NES. 18.2 Immediate family or household a) The entitlement to use personal leave for the purpose of carer's or compassionate leave is subject to the person being either: (i) a member of the Employee's immediate family; or (ii) a member of the Employees' household. b) The term immediate family includes: (i) a spouse, de facto partner, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling of the Employee; or (ii) a child, parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling of a spouse or de facto partner of the Employee.
