Disability Income Protection. 3.4.1 The District shall maintain a policy of disability income protection for tenured and tenure-track faculty working fifty percent (50%) or more of a regular, full-time workload. The District’s Disability Income Protection Program is not available for employees who are hired in long-term temporary positions as defined in Article 2.4.4. 3.4.2 Full-time unit members who receive payment under the terms of the policy of the District’s Disability Income Protection Plan shall be provided District medical benefits for the period of one (1) year following the expiration of the employee’s accrued sick leave benefits. The District contribution shall be based upon the level established for full-time active employees. 3.4.3 After the one-year period, full-time unit members qualifying to receive payment under the terms of the policy for disability income protection may continue to be covered under the District’s medical benefits program at the employee’s expense provided that the program or policy permits such participation.

Disability Income Protection. An Employee who, because of sickness or accident, is unable to perform the duties of his/her occupation is eligible for disability protection benefits provided by the School District under the following conditions. The District shall provide the Employee a disability income policy providing for replacement income at 60% (sixty percent) of the Employee’s per diem pay rate per year. 1. The Employee will have a 30-day wait period before disability benefits begin. Employees may use available sick days during this wait period. 2. The Employee will, after the 30-day period, be eligible for a two-year benefit period. Health sabbaticals shall not be taken consecutively with this leave. 3. During the disability benefit period, the District shall continue all other benefits in effect at the time of the commencement of the disabling injury or illness for a one-year period. During the first year, any health premium share must be made by the Employee. Should the leave extend to the second year, the Employee will pay health care premiums. Disability, for purposes of retirement reporting, will be considered extended sick leave. An Employee on such disability leave will be permitted to purchase up to one year of credited service in the Pennsylvania Public School Employee Retirement System, to the extent such a purchase is permitted by the retirement system. The Employee will be required to pay the District’s share of such purchase. 4. Upon return from leave, the Employee shall, where possible, be returned to the position occupied at the time of disability.

The disability income protection plan shall have a waiting period of thirty (30) calendar days before the benefits shall be extended to an employee. For purposes of disability income coverage, fifty percent (50%) or more is based upon a minimum twenty (20) hours or more a week for a nine-, ten- or eleven-month unit member. 10.9.1 Unit members who receive payment under the terms of the policy of the District's disability income protection plan shall be provided the same level of District medical benefits that they were receiving at the time of disability for the period not to exceed a twelve (12) month period following the expiration of the employee's paid leaves. This benefit is provided to eligible employees for a maximum of twelve (12) months during his or her lifetime. 10.9.2 Payment arrangement for any monthly out-of-pocket premium costs in excess of the established District contribution must be made with the Employee Benefits Department at the District Office. Any out-of-pocket premium costs must be paid by the first day of each month or coverage will lapse. 10.9.3 If the disability payments should stop for any reason during the one-year period and the employee has not returned to work, the District contribution will terminate on the last day of the month in which the disability payments ceased. The unit member shall immediately notify the District if disability payments cease. 10.9.4 After the twelve-month period, unit members qualifying to receive payment under the terms of the policy for disability income protection may continue to be covered under the District's medical benefits program at the employee's expense provided that the program or policy permits such participation. Payment arrangements must also be made with the Employee Benefits Department at the District Office. 10.9.5 Employees who elect to retire during this one-year period, and who qualify for the retiree medical District contribution, shall be subject to the rules governing retiree District contributions after the one-year period. 10.9.6 Should the employee’s resignation or termination occur within the twelve (12) month period, the employee may elect COBRA benefits or District medical extension only. 10.9.6.1 If the employee elects COBRA benefits, the District will pay the amount determined in Section 10.9.1 toward the COBRA medical premium until the District has paid the full twelve-month benefit provided in Section 10.9. 1. Disability Income Protection. Income protection is payable when a full-time employee is absent from work due to legitimate personal illness or injury which is not compensable under the Workplace Health and Safety Insurance Act. It is understood that payment of income protection is for the sole and only purpose of protecting employees against the loss of income during time of such illness.
Disability Income Protection. An employee who has disability (income protection) insurance through the District shall not be required to exhaust his/her sick leave to be granted leave under this subsection. In keeping with the District’s disability insurance carrier, an employee who has such insurance through the District may not receive both sick leave pay and disability benefits at the same time.

This benefit is provided to eligible employees for a maximum of twelve (12) months during his or her lifetime and will be provided as a subsidy toward COBRA. 11.11.3 If any benefit, such as life insurance, can be continued but are not coordinated through COBRA, payment arrangement for any monthly out-of-pocket premium costs in excess of the established District contribution must be made with the Employee Benefits Department at the District Office. Any out-of-pocket premium costs must be paid by the first day of each month or coverage will lapse. 11.11.4 If the disability payments should stop for any reason during the one-year period and the employee has not returned to work, the District contribution subsidy toward COBRA will terminate on the last day of the month in which the disability payments ceased.
