Educatio n Leave. If by the Hospital, an employee shall be entitled to leave of absence with pay and without loss of seniority and benefits to write examinations to upgrade h i s or her employment qualifications. A leave of absence without pay, to take further educa- t i o n related to the employee's work with the Hospital may be granted upon written application by t h e employee to the administration of the Hospital. It is further understood and agreed that the Hospital w i l l , wherever its operational requirements permit, endeavour to arrange the s h i f t s of employees attending courses or seminars to permit such attendance. Where employees are required by the Hospital to take courses to upgrade or acquire new employment cations, the Hospital shall pay the f u l l costs associ- ated with the courses.

J u r y an d Witnes s Duty _- If an employee is required to serve as a juror in any court of law, or is required to attend a s a witness in a court pro- ceeding i n which the Crown is a party, or is required by sub - poena to attend a court of law or Coroners Inquest i n connection with a case arising from t h e employee's d u t i e s a t t h e Hospital, the employee s h a l l not lose regular pay because of such attend - ance provided the employee :
Educatio n Leave. An employee may granted with pay for the purpose of taking continuing education where such education is required i n order to maintain the professional status; and, where the maintenance of such status is required by the Employer and where such education cannot be taken outside working hours, such permission shall not be unnecessarily withheld. In addition, the Employer may grant education leave for varying periods for training which will enable the employee to f i l l his present position more adequately, or to undertake studies i n some field in which training is needed in order to provide a service which the Employer requires or is planning to provide. I n such instances, reimbursement will be governed by regulations i n the Personnel Education Program Subject to operational requirements the Employer agrees t o allocate education leave on an equitable basis among readily available qualified employees.

Requests for such leave will not be unreasonably denied. A nurse shall be entitled to leave of absence without of earnings from her regularly scheduled working hours for the purpose o f writing any examinations required in any recognized course in which nurses are enrolled t o upgrade their nursing qualifications. leave o f absence without loss of regular earnings from regularly scheduled hours for the purpose of attending short courses, workshops or seminars directly related to the nurse’s employment at the hospital may be granted at the discretion of the Hospital upon written application by the nurse to the Director of Nursing or her designate. Professional leave with pay will be granted to nurses who are elected t o the College of Nurses t o attend regularly meetings of the Col o f Nurses. Any employee who i s on an authorized leave of absence as of October shall be entitled to continue the leave in accordance with the terms thereof.

An employee who is upgrading employment qualifications through an Employer approved upgrading course s h a l l be entitled t o leave of absence without l o s s of pay and benefits t o write examinations required by such course. Subject t o operational requirements and employee s h a l l be granted unpaid educational leave of the amount request not exceeding two ( 2 ) years unless mutually agreed between the employee and the Employer. The employee s h a l l not accrue any benefits of the Collective Agreement, except service f o r seniority.
