Emergency and Bereavement Leave a. Support employees shall be granted one (1) day each year for emergencies not covered by any other category of leave. This leave shall be granted at no loss of pay. An emergency is defined as a catastrophic event beyond the prior knowledge or control of the support employee, and which requires the support employee to be absent from his/her job as a result of the event. b. Any leave covered by other leave policies may not be used as Emergency Leave.

Emergency and Bereavement Leave. Absences because of death of a member of the family (includes in-laws, siblings and grandparents or at the Fire Chief’s discretion), when the employee's presence is required away from work, can be taken as paid emergency leave. The use of leave for this purpose shall not exceed 24 hours in a calendar year, and only when specifically authorized by the Fire Chief. Time in excess of 24 hours must be taken from the employee's accrued vacation time and must be approved by the Fire Chief. Hospitalization of any member of the immediate family (includes parents, in-laws, children, spouse, siblings and grandparents or at the Fire Chief’s discretion), when it can be clearly shown that an employee's presence is required can also be used as paid emergency leave. The use of leave for this purpose shall not exceed 24 hours in a calendar year. Time in excess of 24 hours must be taken as sick leave, or other accrued leave if sick leave isn’t available, and have the Fire Chief’s approval. 24 hour shift will be taken as such leave. This shall be per occurrence for the family members listed in this section. In the case of leave for a hospitalization, if the leave is foreseeable based on planned medical treatment, employees are required to make a reasonable effort to schedule the treatment so as not to disrupt unduly the operations of the department, and also required to provide 30 days advance notice, or, if the treatment is in less than 30 days, such notice as practicable. The emergency leave consists of a total of 24 hours per year, whether used for a funeral or hospitalization, and the employee is not compensated if the leave is not used.
Emergency and Bereavement Leave. SECTION 1 All employees covered by this Agreement shall be entitled to five (5), eight hour (8:00) days of paid emergency leave or bereavement leave for each occurrence, to be deducted from accumulated sick leave. a. Emergency shall be defined as a personally compelling situation related to the health or safety of an immediate family member or injury of one of the below- listed persons requiring constant care where the employee is the only person available to provide such care. b. Persons included are: Employee’s spouse, children of either spouse (including adopted), grandchildren of either spouse, parents, or brothers and sisters of either spouse, grandparents of either spouse and domestic partner as defined in Section 2, below. c. Emergency Leave shall also cover a situation where the illness of employee’s spouse or domestic partner requires that he or she be present in order to care for spouse, domestic partner or minor children. d. Xxxxxxxxxxx Leave shall be granted for the death of one of the following persons: Employee’s spouse, children and grandchildren of either spouse (including adopted), parents, brothers and sisters of either spouse, grandparents of either spouse and domestic partner as defined in Section 2, below. SECTION 2 For purposes of applying this provision, a domestic partner shall be defined as set forth in the California Family Code at subsection 297 (a) and a domestic partnership will be deemed to have been lawfully established if it was established in compliance with California Family Code subsection 297(b).

These five (5) days shall be granted with full pay for emergencies or bereavement. Emergency leave may not be utilized for the following: To seek other employment. To participate in social or religious activities. To perform services for compensation outside the school district. For entertainment, recreation, or vacation, or Leave which could be taken under some other provision of this agreement. The reason for the emergency must be given in writing to the building Principal on the first day of return from the emergency leave on a form provided by the building Principal. Bereavement may be used in case of death in the immediate family of the employee or spouse. The immediate family is defined as the husband or wife, children, brother, sister, and parents (or legal guardian), grandparents and grandchildren of either the employee or his/her spouse. Emergency and Bereavement leave of two (2) days may be used to cover other deaths and may be used in full or half day increments not to exceed two (2) days per school year. Emergency and Bereavement Leave. 1. Death or serious illness in the immediate or extended family shall entitle the teacher up to seven (7) accrued sick leave days. 2. It shall further be provided that if the circumstances of death or serious illness in the immediate or extended family requires travel outside the City of Nome, two additional days shall be allowed.

Emergency and Bereavement Leave a. In the event of a family emergency, an Employee shall be entitled to leave with or without pay at the discretion of the Employer. Such leave shall not be unreasonably withheld. b. An Employee shall be entitled to one week paid leave in the event of a death in his or her immediate family. The immediate family shall be construed as a grandparent, parent, parent- in-law, spouse (or like relationship), brother, sister, child or grandchild. Any additional unpaid leave shall be at the discretion of the Employer. Such leave shall not be unreasonably withheld.
