Extended Professional Leave. For the encouragement of continued professional development and resulting improvement in the quality and level of experience of instructional personnel, extended professional leave without pay for the period not to exceed one (1) school year may be granted by the Board.
1. Any certified employee who has satisfactorily completed five (5) consecutive years of service in this school district may apply for extended professional leave without pay.
2. An extended professional leave without pay may be granted to permit a certified employee to engage in study or travel study.
3. A certified employee who requests an extended professional leave without pay for study will be expected to enroll as a full time student carrying a full load (full time student as determined by the institution attended) of academic work at an institution of higher learning approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
4. The applications for extended professional leave without pay, including a plan for study or travel study, must be submitted to the Superintendent or his/her designee during the period of January 15th to February 15th preceding the school year for which the leave is requested. Applicants will be notified not later than March 31 as to the disposition of their applications. An employee receiving permission to take extended professional leave without pay shall inform the Superintendent in writing of his/her intention to either accept or decline such leave. Such notification shall be given not later than fifteen (15) days after the applicant has been notified of approval of his/her request for leave.
5. Three (3) employees may be granted extended professional leave during one school year.
6. An employee making application for his/her first extended professional leave without pay shall have preference over one who has previously had such leave. Upon termination of an extended professional leave, an employee shall not be entitled to another such leave until he/she has completed an additional five (5) years of service in the school district.
7. Extended professional leave without pay shall be counted as one (1) year's experience for the purpose of salary schedule computations. It is the responsibility of the employee to notify the immediate supervisor in writing forty-five (45) days prior to the expiration date of this leave of intent to return to work. Extended Professional Leave. Employees shall be entitled to extended professional leave without pay for a period of one year. Such leave shall be granted only to employees with satisfactory ratings who carry not less than the number of semester hours required of the average student enrolled at that institution taking graduate work for an advanced degree. Such leave may be extended for an additional year.
Extended Professional Leave. 1) All instructional personnel who are on continuing, or professional service contract and who apply for and are granted an extended professional leave of absence must present to the Superintendent or designee the following:
i. A planned program of study for the year and evidence of completion of the program or
ii. A summary of activities designed to contribute to the profession of teaching, which will be pursued.
Extended Professional Leave. 1. Extended professional leave is leave without pay granted in excess of 30 days. No one, with the exception of employees granted leave to work for a charter school, may receive more than two consecutive years of extended professional leave, which is approved one year at a time. Except for instances where a charter school ceases operation, an employee granted extended professional leave for employment with a charter school may return to active status only at the end of the school year. Upon return, the employee shall be assigned to an equivalent position in accordance with his/her area(s) of certification. An employee may not receive in excess of two consecutive years of extended professional leave. An employee granted extended professional leave may engage in activities for which no college credit is granted, including full-time employment, provided it is determined by the Superintendent or his/her designee that these activities will enhance his/her professional competence. If approved for full-time employment, an employee shall not receive any fringe benefits provided by the M-DCPS.
2. An employee must complete three years of full-time employment prior to requesting extended professional leave, unless such leave is needed to complete an internship as part of an academic program leading to a Bachelor's degree in education.
3. Extended leave for study may be granted solely for programs of study which are designed to enhance and expand the educational training for careers available within M-DCPS. An employee applying for extended leave for study must be able to demonstrate the relevance of the proposed program of study to the employee's current and projected employment status with M-DCPS.
4. Extended professional leave shall not apply to employees in summer school.
Extended Professional Leave. A leave of absence for professional improvement, without salary, may be granted for any teacher, upon application, for up to one (1) year and upon reapplication, for up to a second year, for the purpose of the following: Engaging in study at an accredited university in his/her subject area or area deemed beneficial to the school system by the Superintendent.
a. Full-time participation in the federally sponsored Peace Corps or Job Corps.
b. Participating in foreign exchange teaching programs.
c. Full-time teaching in his/her subject area in Department of Defense or Department of State programs.
d. Engaging in study or an activity deemed beneficial to the school system. Such applications shall be subject to approval by the Contract Monitoring Committee. Approved applications shall be forwarded to the Superintendent for final approval. Application for such leave shall be submitted to the Superintendent not later than sixty (60) days prior to the start of the date when the leave is to commence. Application for reemployment should be filed at least six (6) months prior to the end of leave. Upon return from such leave the teacher shall be returned to a position which is vacant at the time of return and for which he/she is certified.
Extended Professional Leave. A professional leave may be extended an additional year, up to two (2) years total, without pay upon application, for purpose of participation in: Extended professional leave shall not be denied in an arbitrary or capricious manner and reasons for denial shall be given in writing to the bargaining unit member.
Extended Professional Leave. A. Extended professional leave is defined as a professional leave experience that would require more than thirty (30) consecutive school days. This leave may be paid or unpaid. This leave may be available to teachers with at least five (5) years of service at WCS. Teachers who apply for an Extended Professional Leave commit to continued employment at Wa-Nee Community Schools for five years following completion of the Leave.
1. In order to request Extended Professional Leave, the teacher must submit a written proposal six (6) months in advance of the leave to the Director of Curriculum outlining the following:
a. Detailed description of professional learning to be completed during leave including expected start/end date.
b. Description of how leave supports current district/school initiatives
c. Letter of support from building principal
d. Any special accommodations required during leave
2. Upon receipt of proposal, the Director of Curriculum shall review based upon the following criteria:
a. Alignment with district’s Mission, Vision, and Goals
b. Alignment with current professional learning initiatives
c. Relevance and significance of proposed plan
d. Impact leave and new learning will have on students
3. If leave is recommended by Director of Curriculum, request will be submitted to Superintendent for final review and decision upon whether to recommend to board for approval. If approved, the district and teacher shall enter into a formal Extended Professional Leave Agreement outlining the following terms and conditions, including but not limited to:
a. Leave duration
b. Return to work obligations

Extended Professional Leave. 17 Leave granted to a bargaining unit member for professional improvement in excess of thirty (30) 18 consecutive days, but for a period not exceeding one year, is extended professional leave. Such leave 19 is ordinarily initiated by the individual and may be granted at the discretion of the Board, provided 20 the individual has served successfully and satisfactorily for a period of three (3) years or more. 21 Extended professional leave shall be without compensation.
Extended Professional Leave. 17.2.1 A leave of absence without pay for a full school year, commencing in September and concluding in June, will be granted upon approval of the Committee for the purpose of serving as an officer or in a similar high level position with an educational and/or professional organization.
