A reduced appointment is an appointment requiring action of the Board, in which, by mutual agreement between the faculty member and the Board, a faculty member may be assigned a fraction of the faculty member’s normal workload and receive a proportional fraction of the faculty member’s salary. The faculty member on a reduced appointment retains tenure or Continuing Contract Status and is entitled to the rights, privileges, and protections accorded any other faculty member. The faculty member on a reduced appointment shall meet a proportional share of the Tenured faculty member’s departmental responsibilities which shall be specified at the time the reduced appointment is approved. Reduced appointments are granted for a specified period, and they may be renewed only by mutual agreement between the faculty member and the Board; otherwise the faculty member must return to full-time status. A faculty member on a reduced appointment must inform the faculty member’s department head by March 1 of the last year of the specified period of the faculty member’s commitment to return to full-time status or to request a continuation of the reduced appointment. During the period a faculty member is on a reduced appointment and to the extent allowable according to the University’s agreement with the carrier and law, a faculty member is entitled to University-paid retirement, life insurance, short-term disability, and long-term disability based on the faculty member’s reduced appointment salary. If the faculty member elects to participate in the University’s medical, dental, or optical coverages, the University will pay a percentage of the contribution/premium in proportion to the faculty member’s reduced appointment. The remainder of the contribution/premium is the responsibility of the faculty member.
