By definition a "Buddy" is another person who can respond to unexpec xxx c ircumstances and summon help or render assistance when someone is injured, disabled or trapped. The "Buddy" question for the most part only arises when work tasks are assigned to a s xxxxx individual. This practice will continue when practical, but should no t be considered precedent setting.
Buddy System. A system to allow continuity of production work over the shift change and allow a smooth takeover and an opportunity for good communication regarding the status of important items from one operating team to the next, with a minimum of delay for the arriving and departing employee(s). When two or more employees wish to participate in the system, they will complete a form (Buddy Notification Form) giving the names of the employees who are co-operating and the expected times of the handovers. This form will be submitted to the Plant Superintendent and renewed whenever there is a change to the employees involved or if the expected changeover time is altered. The changeover times are approximate and may vary due to unforeseen circumstances. Rotating shift employees benefit from this procedure.
Buddy System. The Buddy System will be required when employees are working in environments as follows:
a. Inside vessels, lift stations, areas of leaking gas, designated construction areas, refueling operations, high voltage (50 volts when energized, or above), high pressure gas (3500 lbs. or higher), chemical cleaning or cryogenic testing, or to work with hoist equipment, necessitating the presence or assistance of another individual under the existing safety regulations, there shall always be two or more employees assigned thereto; however, the “buddy system” will be utilized to comply with any regulatory or safety provisions as required. (Example: areas where fall hazards exist)
b. When work involves extensive troubleshooting and/or work on top of elevators there will always be two (2) qualified technicians assigned. Elevator work will require the “buddy system” for all work under or over the elevator or for proof testing. (See latest revision of Safety and Health Handbook SSP-8715-0001.) It is understood by all parties that the Buddy System may not require the same craft. However, only qualified, authorized and certified employees will be utilized.

The donating employee shall not be allowed to donate hours if that donation will drop the donor’s accrued sick leave balance below one hundred twelve (112) hours for an employee assigned to Suppression or below eighty (80) hours for an employee assigned to a forty (40) hour work week.

Under either option, pre-scheduled leave time of the receiving employee shall be used as scheduled and sick leave shall be used as accrued in the 24/12 or 8-hour blocks, as outlined above.
