Autism. Students with autism typically have a developmental disability significantly impacting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction which adversely affects a student’s educational performance. This delay generally manifests prior to the age 3.1 A student may not be determined eligible as a student with autism if the student’s educational performance is adversely affected primarily because the student has an emotional disturbance.2 The written evaluation report by the group of qualified professionals must include specific recommendations for behavioral interventions and strategies.3 Additional characteristics associated with autism may include— • engagement in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements; • resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines; and/or • unusual responses to sensory experiences. A student who manifests the characteristics of autism after age 3 could be identified as having autism if the criteria in this section are identified.4 The definitions of conditions or categories that are used for purposes of establishing an individual's eligibility for mental health services, as found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), are not synonymous with criteria used for determining whether a child is a “child with a disability” for purposes of establishing eligibility for services under the IDEA.5 The group of qualified professionals conducting an evaluation of a student suspected of having autism will conduct assessments and observations, and collect data, as necessary for the ARD Committee to make an eligibility determination.
Autism. Coventry University employs Disability Advisers who are specialists in working with students with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC). Our Summer School and weekly social group are popular with students and are considered an essential part of the transition and settling in process. In November 2016 we recruited a Senior Specialist Mentor to co‐ordinate the activities of our Mentoring Scheme. This is a new initiative, mentors are being fully integrated into our wider disability support team with a view to facilitating joint working and a more cohesive approach to the complex needs of many students with ASC. The new arrangement also facilitates closer working links with the University Mental Health Advisers and Welfare Officers. With the new team in place we plan to review progression data and investigate imbalances, and evaluate interventions. A number of supporting evaluation mechanisms are proposed, these include a survey of all disabled students to be carried out in May 2017 with the aim of obtaining quantitative and qualitative data which will inform action plans and staff development programmes. Additionally a cross‐University group of Learning Support Co‐ordinators will review progression data on an annual basis and formulate action plans to address imbalances of attainment and progression. We will continue to develop and nurture our existing links with student representatives to support our aim of achieving an inclusive environment for all students and staff. The cost of these activities has been included in our forecast of student success expenditure for 2018/19.
