In all cases, the payment of higher grade pay whilst on leave will not exceed six (6) months duration. Breaks in Higher Grade duties of five (5) days or less aggregate duration shall not cause a break in continuity for the purposes of this sub-clause.

Provided that any employee relieving another in a lower paid position shall not be reduced in salary whilst so relieving.

The appointment is to be made for the purposes of either training in the skills of the position and/or for self development. An assessment of the skills/competencies and qualifications of the employee required to act in the higher grade position will be undertaken by the employee’s Manager prior to the appointment. This assessment will include a comparison of the difference in the requirements as per the Statement of Duties the employee currently does, and the statement of Duties as per the higher graded position. This assessment will determine the amount of the higher grade salary that is to be applicable for the relief period. Appointments made under this clause will be paid for all time worked in the higher grade position. ii. Is the incumbent person enjoying a rate of pay which is higher than normal for their position?
25.6.3 These two factors have to be determined as it should be made clear to the relief in cases where the higher grade pay will not be the same as the incumbent person.
