SICK LEAVE / Medical Certificates and Reporting. 10.1 Sick leave with pay shall be granted to a teacher on account of injury to or the illness or disability of the teacher, or for the purpose of obtaining necessary medical or dental treatment.
10.2 A teacher shall, upon commencement of employment under contract, have access to twenty (20) school days of sick leave in their first year of employment. The twenty

10.2 A teacher who is absent from school duties to obtain necessary medical or dental treatment, or because of accident, disability or sickness shall continue to be entitled to the full number of sick leave days stipulated in
10.1. Notwithstanding the above, after 20 teaching days of continuous absence in a teacher’s first year of service, no further salary shall be paid. After 90 calendar days of continuous absence during a teacher’s second or subsequent years of service, no further salary shall be paid and the provisions of ASEBP shall take effect. A teacher who in his second or subsequent year of service returns to work after a continuous absence of 90 calendar days shall have his sick leave entitlement under clause 10.1 reinstated upon submission of a medical certificate of good health.
10.3 In the case of a teacher who has had previous service with The Horizon School Division and re-enters its employ within 26 months of leaving, and upon production of a medical certificate of good health, the sick leave accumulated, clause 10.1, during the period of employment with The Horizon School Division shall be reinstated to the credit of the teacher.
10.4 A teacher who is absent from school duties to obtain necessary medical or dental treatment, or because of accident, disability or sickness for a period of four or more consecutive teaching days may be required by the Employer to provide a medical certificate.
10.5 A teacher who is absent from school duties to obtain medical or dental treatment, or because of accident, disability or sickness for a period of three consecutive teaching days or less may be required to present a signed statement giving reasons for such absence.

(a) In the first year of employment with the Employer, the teacher shall be entitled to statutory sick leave. Should sick leave exceed the number of days of sick leave entitlement, any salary adjustment required shall be made on the last cheque issued to the teacher for the current school year.
(b) During the second and subsequent years under contract, annual sick leave with full salary will be granted for the purpose of obtaining necessary medical or dental treatment, or because of accident, sickness or disability for ninety (90) calendar days.
(c) A teacher who has more than one (1) year of service and has been absent due to medical disability shall, upon return to full-time duty, be entitled to an additional sick leave benefit of ninety (90) calendar days.
(d) For the purpose of this Collective Agreement, an interrupted illness for the same illness shall be counted as one illness.
10.3 Before any payment is made under the foregoing provisions, a teacher may be required by the Employer to substantiate their illness as follows:
(a) Either a statement, in a form approved by the Employer, signed by the teacher substantiating the illness or,
(b) At the request of the Employer, a certificate from the teacher’s attending medical or dental practitioner where the absence is for a period of more than three (3) days.
(c) Notwithstanding Article 10.3(b) above, where the Employer is concerned about the pattern and/or frequency of a teacher’s absences, they may notify the teacher in writing of the obligation to provide a medical certificate to support any further absences for the remainder of the school year.
(d) At the request of the Employer or its designate, a certificate from a physician or dentist designated by the Employer attesting to the illness or disability claimed provided there is no cost to the teacher.
(e) The Employer may request confirmation from the teacher’s physician that the teacher is following the physician’s recommended treatment plan. If there is a fee for the physician’s confirmation, the Employer shall reimburse the teacher following delivery of a receipt to the Employer.

10.2 In the event that during the first year of service:
a) a teacher has insufficient sick leave to provide full salary and benefits during the qualifying period for ASEBP Extended Disability Benefits, and
b) the teacher is accepted by the insurance carrier as an Extended Disability claimant, the School Division shall pay the salary and benefits of the teacher for the period of insufficient sick leave to a maximum of ninety (90) calendar days once the teacher is accepted by the insurance carrier as an Extended Disability claimant and receives the first Extended Disability payment.
10.3 During the second and subsequent years of service, annual sick leave with full salary and benefits will be granted for the purpose of obtaining necessary medical or dental treatment, or because of accident, sickness or disability for (90) calendar days.
10.4 A teacher who has more than one (1) year of service and has been absent due to medical disability shall, upon return to full-time duty, be entitled to sick leave benefit of ninety (90) calendar days.
10.5 Notwithstanding clause 10.4, a teacher upon returning to work from a period of sick leave of less than ninety (90) consecutive calendar days thereafter will, if that teacher does not take any sick leave during the first ten (10) consecutive school days following return to work, have their sick leave entitlement reinstated to ninety (90) consecutive calendar days. If sick leave is taken for the same illness during the first ten (10) consecutive school days following return to work, sick leave shall only be available to the extent of the unused portion of the initially available ninety (90) consecutive calendar days.
10.6 When a teacher has been on sick leave for a period over forty-five (45) calendar days and wishes to return to work, the teacher may be required by the employer to provide medical evidence, satisfactory to the employer, stating that the teacher is fit to perform all regular duties on a full-time continuous basis.
10.7 Before any payment is made under the foregoing regulations, the teacher shall, if requested by the School Division, provide:
10.7.1 A declaration where the absence is for a period of three (3) days or less. This declaration shall be submitted within fifteen (15) days of return to work or on June 30th, whichever is sooner.

SICK LEAVE / Medical Certificates and Reporting. 10.1 Annual sick leave with pay will be granted to a teacher for the purpose of obtaining necessary medical or dental treatment or because of accident, sickness or disability, in accordance with the following schedule:
a) In the first year of service with the School Division, a teacher shall be entitled to sick leave as follows:
i) An accumulation of the maximum statutory sick leave of 20 days accumulated at two days per month.
ii) Should sick leave exceed the number of days of sick leave entitlement resulting in salary deduction, subsequently accumulated sick leave entitlement, to a maximum of 20 days, in the same school year shall be applied and any salary adjustment required shall be made on the last cheque issued to the teacher for the current school year.
b) During the second and subsequent years of continuous service, annual sick leave with full salary will be granted for the purpose of obtaining necessary medical or dental treatment or because of accident, sickness or disability for 90 calendar days.
10.2 After 90 calendar days of continuous absence due to medical disability, no further salary shall be paid and the Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan - Extended Disability Plan D shall take effect.
10.3 Where a teacher has suffered an illness and/or has been paid under the provisions of the Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan, upon their return to full-time duty, they shall be entitled to an additional sick leave benefit in the current year in accordance with the following schedule to a maximum of: Less than one year of service – nil After one year of service - 90 calendar days.
10.4 When a teacher leaves the employ of the School Division all sick leave shall be cancelled.
10.5 A teacher who is absent from school duties to obtain necessary medical or dental treatment or because of accident, disability or sickness for a period of three consecutive teaching days or more may be required by the superintendent or designate to present a signed doctor's certificate stating the reason for such absence.

10.2 During the second and subsequent years of service, annual sick leave for ninety 90 calendar days with full salary will be granted for the purpose of obtaining necessary medical or dental treatment or because of accident, sickness or disability. Five (5) of these days, which fall on school days within a school year, may be used to care for the teacher’s sick child, parent or spouse.
10.3 A teacher who has more than one (1) year of service and has been absent due to medical disability shall, upon return to their full-time duty, be entitled to an additional sick leave benefit of ninety (90) calendar days. Prior to such return, the teacher may be required to provide at the request of the Superintendent, a medical certificate from a physician designated by the School Division stating that the teacher is medically able to resume service.
