Teaching Evaluation. .01 Assessment and evaluation of teaching shall be based on the effectiveness of the instructor, as indicated by command over subject matter, familiarity with recent developments in the field, preparedness, presentation, accessibility to students and influence on the intellectual and scholarly development of students.
.02 While the parties agree that student course evaluations contribute to the improvement of teaching within the University, they do not on their own constitute an evaluation of teaching performance. Further, it is understood that not all opinions provided in student course evaluations are relevant to the assessment and evaluation of teaching.
Teaching Evaluation. 26.1 The purpose of this Article is to provide regulations for the implementation of the objectives of Senate's policy on Teaching Evaluation, as adopted at meetings held on October 26th, November 24th and December 6th, 1976.
(a) A primary purpose of any teaching evaluation is that of self-development and improvement.
(b) Teaching effectiveness may be evaluated by student questionnaires and by academic peers, so long as such evaluations are in accord with the regulations below and with other provisions of this Collective Agreement.
(c) Student Teaching Evaluations will be supervised by individual departments or schools and all originals shall be returned to the instructor and only summaries which conform to the provisions of this Article may be used for any purpose.
Teaching Evaluation.
.01 The parties agree that annual assessments of teaching effectiveness by students are valuable in contributing to the improvement of teaching within the University.
Teaching Evaluation.

.03 The Centre for Teaching and Learning shall assist departments and programs to develop and maintain survey instruments that are appropriate to their academic disciplines. Chairs shall ensure the annual application of such instruments within their department or program.
.04 Members shall not be present when the students complete the survey, and the survey shall not be transmitted to the department or program by the members being evaluated. Academic Administrative Assistants of departments/programs shall count, record, and number the surveys transmitted for each course. Normally, teaching evaluations will be submitted electronically. Exceptions may be made in some cases, subject to departmental practices.
.05 Once completed and following the release of final grades for the course, these surveys will be made available in confidence to the member, the Department/Program Chairs and the Xxxx.
.06 Each department and program will retain the originals or copies for a twenty-four (24) month period.
.07 Assessments shall be used by the department or program in the context of personnel decisions, including determinations in respect of Right of First Refusal.
.08 Each member shall be encouraged to create a teaching dossier, which may consist of a CV, annual teaching evaluations, letters of reference and other information the member deems pertinent. Members will submit these dossiers when required for RFR.
Teaching Evaluation. (See Legal Rights Section for Additional Language)
Teaching Evaluation. 5.5.1 Effective teaching plays a critical role in the quality of the learning outcomes of students. Student evaluation of teaching and curriculum may help to identify where the student learning experience can be improved, provide summary evidence of levels of student satisfaction, provide feedback on course content and delivery, and provide evidence of good practice in teaching.
5.5.2 All fixed-term and continuing Staff will be required to undertake regular student evaluation of their teaching and the units they convene, including research supervision as appropriate.
5.5.3 Staff will not be required to obtain student evaluation of teaching for more than one unit each academic year. Staff will select the unit or units in which their teaching will be evaluated. Notwithstanding this, a Staff Member’s PDR supervisor may require that a formal evaluation of teaching be undertaken in a particular unit where evidence from other sources suggests a need for student evaluation.
5.5.4 Casual Academic Staff will be encouraged to seek student feedback and to attend professional development programs and workshops relevant to their teaching.
5.5.5 Student evaluation of teaching will not be used by the University to initiate any action under Unsatisfactory Performance (clause 4.11).
5.5.6 Formal student evaluation of teaching and, if applicable, curriculum provides one source of evidence of teaching performance and should be used along with other sources as outlined below for discussion relating to performance development and review, probation and promotion. Other sources of information about teaching performance and development may include, but are not limited to, a Staff Member’s:
(a) teaching portfolio;
(b) participation in curriculum development;
(c) participation in peer review of teaching;
(d) scholarly output relating to teaching;
(e) success in gaining internal and/or external grants relating to teaching; and
(f) attendance at relevant professional development programs.
5.5.7 Aggregated teaching evaluations may be published on the University’s website in a form that does not allow identification of individual Staff Members.
Teaching Evaluation. 23.7.1 The University will maintain an individualised teaching and learning survey system which provides diagnostic feedback for academic staff.
23.7.2 As part of professional development academic staff and academic casuals who teach will regularly, including annually if required survey student opinion of their teaching and will engage in other efforts to monitor and improve their performance. The University will assist in the provision of support for those efforts and for this purpose only a staff member’s immediate supervisor may have access to survey feedback. As a formative tool the survey must not be used for performance management.
23.7.3 The material produced by the system can be used by staff members e.g. as evidence of teaching performance for presentation to promotions and continuing appointments committees.
23.7.4 The survey must be a statistically valid instrument.
23.7.5 The Executive Xxxx may access aggregated teaching evaluation survey data for the purpose of considering developmental activities to improve teaching results. The Executive Xxxx may produce a report on the outcomes of that aggregated data. For purposes outside the faculty data will be aggregated across the University.
Teaching Evaluation. A. Each teacher shall have the right upon request to review the contents of his own personnel evaluation file within the system. This excludes any confidential material, such as recommendations from colleges, universities and previous employers. A representative of the Association may be requested to accompany the teacher in such review. The use of xxxxx- dropping, closed circuit television, public address or audio systems, and similar surveillance devices shall be strictly prohibited.
B. A teacher shall at all times be entitled to have present a representative of the Association when he/she is being reprimanded, warned, or disciplined for any infraction of discipline or delinquency in professional performance. When a request for such representation is made, no action shall be taken with respect to the teacher until such representative of the Association is present.
C. The Board of Education reserves the right to make all extracurricular assignments on a year to year basis. Such assignments or dismissal from assignment are not subject to the grievance procedure. However, written reasons for dismissal shall be provided to the individual affected.
D. The District School Improvement Team will discuss evaluation school policy and tools to be used in evaluating teacher performance.
Teaching Evaluation. (See Legal Rights Section for Additional Language)
A. Teachers shall be given a copy of their rating or any other written evaluation of their work prepared by their supervisors at least one (1) day before any conference to discuss it. A teacher shall have the right to discuss such rating or evaluation with his/her superiors before it is submitted to the central admin- istration or put in his/her personnel file, provided that such request for discussion is made within five (5) school days after the teacher receives a copy of the rating or evaluation and has signed one (1) copy thereof as having been read.
B. Any complaints regarding a teacher made to any member or the administration by any parent, stu- dent or other person which are used in any manner in evaluating a teacher shall be promptly investigated and called to the attention of the teacher. The teacher shall be given an opportunity to respond to and/or rebut such complaint and shall have the right to be represented by the association at the meetings or conferences regarding such complaint.
C. All monitoring, observation or recording of the work of a teacher shall be conducted openly and with full knowledge of the teacher. All evaluations
D. Final evaluation of a teacher upon termination of his/her employment shall be concluded prior to separation and no documents and/or other material shall be placed in the personnel file of such teacher after separation except as in accordance with the procedure set forth in this Article.
X. Xx, in the teacher's judgment, an evaluation may affect his/her continuous employment, the mat- ter shall be subject to the Grievance Procedure, to the level of the Board, but shall not be a proper sub- ject for arbitration.
F. In the event of a claim by a teacher that his/her evaluation is not factually correct, said claims shall be investigated on behalf of the Board of Education; and if the claim is found to be valid, said evaluation shall be amended so as to accurately reflect the situation.

.02 The Instructional Development Centre (IDC) shall assist departments and programs to develop and maintain assessment instruments that are appropriate to their academic disciplines. Chairs shall ensure the annual application of such instruments within their department or program.
.03 Members shall not be present when the students assess their teaching and assessments shall not be transmitted to the department or program by the members. Departments or programs shall count the number of assessments transmitted annually for each member. Members may read the assessments after final grades are submitted. At this time, members may elect to keep the originals, in which case the departments and programs will retain the originals or copies for a twenty-four (24) month period. Assessments shall be used by the department or program in the context of personnel decisions, including determinations in respect of Right of First Refusal.
.04 Each member shall be encouraged to create a teaching dossier, which may consist of a CV, annual teaching evaluations, letters of reference and other information the member deems pertinent. Members may submit these dossiers when applying for RFR.
.05 Members may also submit a dossier when applying for academic positions, but the decision not to submit a teaching dossier for this purpose shall not be held against a member.
