Unassisted Leave. Unless the request creates special problems for the College, the College will grant an employee unassisted leave for a period of up to one year. Such a leave will be for any purpose deemed justifiable by the employee. If it involves experience of particular value to the College, such as industrial or business experience which does not lead to a change of placement on scale, the employee will receive an increment and accrue seniority during his/her absence providing these have been approved by the Vice President in writing prior to the commencement of the leave. Such approval will be conditional upon the leave being used essentially as planned. Under special circumstances a leave may be extended to a total of two (2) years. Since an employee's annual vacation and other benefits and entitlements will be reduced as a result of the unassisted leave, arrangements for any adjustments must be approved by the Xxxx before the leave begins.

Unassisted Leave. Once a calendar year, the employer will inform each regular and temporary employee, in writing, of their step on scale and increment date. The increment date shall be specified in the letter of appointment, except that in the case of the award of an increment for a degree, the increment shall be granted effective the first day of the month following submission to the Division Head of complete documentation to prove the degree has been completed. Increments shall be granted until the maximum on the scale is reached. Any change in criteria for the initial placement on salary scale as outlined in Article 5.2 shall, where applicable, be reflected in the advancement on salary scale for an existing employee effective on the date of change in Article 5.2.

An employee granted leave under this article shall be deemed to have resigned on the date on which his/her leave commenced if notification of intent to return is not made three (3) calendar months prior to expiration of the leave. d) Responsibility for payment of premiums for all benefits, including the Employer's share of applicable benefits, rests with the employee. e) Seniority is neither accrued nor lost during such leave. If unassisted leave involves experience of particular value to the College which does not lead to a change of placement on scale, the employee will receive increment credit and accumulate seniority as provided for elsewhere in this agreement, providing these have been approved in writing by the President prior to the commencement of leave. f) Normally, an employee will require a minimum of five (5) year's employment with the College before leave will be granted under this section.

Unassisted Leave. A Continuing academic staff member may be granted leave of absence without pay for up to two years to take educational training or for personal reasons as may be agreed to in writing by the continuing academic staff members and the Board, subject to the terms of this Section. On return from an approved leave of absence without pay, an academic staff member will be placed in a comparable position to that held prior to the leave and at a salary based on the grid placement attained at the time the leave of absence commenced. This provision shall not impede the Board's ability to give notice under Section "Termination of a Continuing Academic Staff Member" or Section "Redundancy of a Continuing Academic Staff Member." An academic staff member may elect to purchase the Unassisted Leave period, according to provisions outlined in the Local Authorities Pension Plan. Where the staff member makes such an election, the College will pay the employer share of pension contribution during periods of the approved leave, to a maximum of months. This month maximum shall be inclusive of any previous unpaid leaves for which employer contributions to the Local Authorities Pension Plan have been made. During the period of approved leave of absence without pay, an academic staff member may continue participation in the Alberta Health Care Plan through the College, providing the member pays of premium costs, and has prepaid the appropriate funds to the College in advance. During the period of approved leave of absence without pay, an academic staff member may, subject to the approval of the continue participation in the College Group Life Insurance Plan, Extended Health Care Plan and Dental Plan, providing the member pays of premium costs and has prepaid the appropriate funds to the College in advance. The academic staff member must elect to continue participation in all of these plans, or none of them. If at any time the academic staff member has not placed sufficient funds with the College to cover current premium costs, the plans will be terminated and reinstatement will not be possible until the member has returned to work. No other benefits will be available to an academic staff member during an approved leave of absence without pay. A member on unassisted leave may resign his position with the College by providing a minimum of (90) calendar days notice in writing prior to the end of the unassisted leave.

Under special circumstances a leave may be or extended to a total of two (2) years. A leave will be for any purpose justifiable by the employee. If the leave involves experience of value to College, as approved in writing by the appropriate Vice President, the faculty member will accumulate seniority and, if applicable, increment credit during the leave. Such approval will be conditional on the leave being essentially as planned. Advanced placement for activities carried out during the leave is subject to the and conditions of Clause A faculty member cannot earn both increment credit and advanced placement credit for the same activity. Arrangements for the leave must take into account that an employee's annual vacation entitlement will be reduced in proportion to the leave period.
