VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. FOR THE PURPOSE OF ACHIEVING REDUCTIONS
a. This section shall have application only to "leaves of absence for the purpose of achieving reductions" and shall not have application to leaves of absence for any other purpose.
b. When notice is given under Section 17.7 of the County's decision to establish reduced-in-hours positions, regular employees in the class and department may request a leave of absence for the purpose of achieving reductions, if such request is made no less than seven (7) calendar days prior to the date the reduced-in-hours positions are effective. Subject to the provisions of Subsection b., employees in the class and department, who so volunteer in writing, shall be granted such leaves of absence on the basis of seniority.
c. At the discretion of the appointing authority, a certain number of volunteer employees shall not be entitled to the above described leaves of absence on the basis of seniority. The number of volunteer employees in a classification which the appointing authority may except from said leaves of absence shall not exceed ten percent (10%) of the number of volunteers initially accepted for leaves of absence (rounded to the next highest number) for the purpose of achieving reductions. Said leaves of absence shall be for not less than a six-month period.
VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. The Board of Education may grant any teacher a voluntary leave of absence without pay and without benefits for a period of one (1) year, provided that the granting of such leave of absence shall prevent the layoff of another teacher or permit the recall of a laid off teacher from the school district. Such leaves of absence shall be subject to the following provisions:
1. Applications for a voluntary leave of absence shall be made in accordance with Section H.1 of this Article.
2. Teachers granted a voluntary leave of absence will accrue one (1) year of seniority during the leave of absence.
3. During a voluntary leave of absence, the teacher involved will not lose tenure status, nor any previously accrued sick leave, but additional sick leave will not accrue during the voluntary leave of absence.
4. Upon return from a voluntary leave of absence, the teacher involved will be placed on the same step of the salary schedule as that teacher would have been entitled to at the time the leave was granted. No additional step on the salary schedule will accrue during the voluntary leave of absence.
5. Return from a voluntary leave of absence (under this section to avoid layoff of a teacher) shall allow teacher to return to an available position for which he/she is certified and qualified. In the event no position is available, determination for layoffs will be based on state law and district policy/provedures.
6. Any extension of a voluntary leave of absence shall be without fringe benefits and in accordance with Section H.5 of this Article.
VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. Voluntary leaves of absence for education, licensed professional exchange programs and other professional opportunities deemed relevant to the licensed professional's assignment, rest and recuperation, or because of illness, shall be granted to up to two (2) contract licensed professionals each year to hold a licensed professional's position on the salary schedule. The District may grant leaves beyond the two leaves listed above. Leaves of absences for approved travel, educational opportunities not relevant to the licensed professional's assignment, or to obtain other employment outside the district are at the District's discretion. This clause is subject to the provision that except as otherwise required by law or contract, this clause will not operate to guarantee any particular position upon pre-employment. Licensed professionals on leaves of absence shall notify the District on or before March 1, if they intend to return to employment with the district the following school year. Failure to notify the District by April 15, is considered a resignation. The District will notify the licensed professional of this obligation in writing at the time the licensed professional begins the leave and by March 1 prior to the April 15 deadline. Up to two (2) years leave of absence may be granted for the purpose of study or engaging in an educational program or for campaigning or serving in a public or association office. In case of a licensed professional who is suffering from a serious illness as defined in Article 15, Section C 2 and they have exhausted their OFLA/FMLA leave as well as all available paid leave, including any donated leave from the Sick Leave Bank, the District will continue the employer's contribution to the licensed professional's medical insurance program for one (1) month following the exhaustion of the above identified leaves.
VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. 18.4.1. Upon application, consistent with School Committee Policy, of a member of the professional staff and upon the recommendation of the principal, after consideration of the merits of the request, the Superintendent may grant a full or partial leave of absence. Written application for leaves of absence must be submitted before July 1 of the year in which leave is requested. Requests submitted after the deadline date will be considered only in the event of extraordinary circumstances as determined by the Superintendent. During a leave of absence, a teacher will receive no salary, no Region payment of insurance plans, or other benefits. A teacher on leave of absence will receive the same consideration with respect to reduction-in-force and future staffing plans as if they/their were actively teaching and not on leave.
18.4.2. Salary credit for the year of leave of absence is at the discretion of the Superintendent upon the recommendation of the principal. Persons granted leaves of absence by the Superintendent who are on leave on January 1 must inform the Superintendent by February 1 of the year in which they intend to re- turn or the teacher’s service will be considered terminated at the end of the school year for which the leave was granted.
18.4.3. A teacher’s insurance plan will be continued during the period of any unpaid leave of absence (including a maternity leave), provided the teacher pays the total monthly cost of such coverage to the Region by the seventh (7th) of each month.
VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. 18.01 An Occasional Teacher may request, in writing, a leave of absence of up to one year. There is no entitlement to salary nor shall the time on leave count towards any recognition for experience or salary. The employee is responsible for de-activating his/her name from the absentee reporting and replacement information system for the duration of the leave.
18.02 It is the Occasional Teacher’s reponsibility to inform the board in writing and to reactivate his/her name on the system, at the end of the leave period.
VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. Subject to (a) above, employees who request time off thirty (30) days in advance will be granted the time on the basis of classification seniority. Similar requests made less than thirty (30) days in advance will be granted on a first come, first served basis.
VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. Employees with seniority may apply for a Leave of Absence without loss of seniority if a written application is submitted and approved in accordance with the Policy of the Board.

The leave must be for a minimum of three (3) months and up to one (1) year. There is no entitlement to salary nor shall the time on leave count towards any recognition for experience or salary. The employee is responsible for de-activating his/her name from the absentee reportingand replacement information system for the duration of the leave. All such requests must be made on or before April 1st of any school year.
VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. 14.1 It is understood that voluntary leaves of absence and extensions not herein provided, may under certain exceptional circumstances, be necessary. Leaves of absence and extensions under such exceptional circumstances shall be left to the discretion of the "Company".
14.2 Any employee who has been absent on account of sickness, upon return to work, must be physically able to perform the work available. The "Company" may demand a Doctor's certificate as evidence of physical capability.
14.3 In case a job or operation has been abolished during an employee's absence, such provisions shall apply to re-employment as would have applied had such employee been at work at the time the job or operation was abolished.
14.4 Leave of absence without loss of seniority shall be granted to a reasonable number of employees elected to act as representatives of the "Union", or as delegates to Union conventions, conferences, and other similar functions.
