Paid Bereavement Leave. ‌ (a) In the case of death of immediate family, an employee will be entitled to special leave, at their regular rate of pay, from the death up to and including the day of the funeral or service with, if necessary, an allowance for immediate return travelling time. Such leave will normally not exceed five workdays. (b) Immediate family is defined as a parent, spouse, parent-in-law, child, sibling, grandchild or any other relative with whom the employee permanently resides. (c) In the event of the death of the employee’s grandparents, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, the employee will be entitled to special leaves of one day for the purpose of attending the funeral or service.

A relative shall include a person related by marriage, adoption, or common-law. Where the burial occurs outside the province, such leave shall also include reasonable travelling time, but in no event shall the total leave exceed five (5) working days. 12.19.3 Reasonable leave for attendance at funerals for close friends or relative other than those listed above shall be arranged between the Employee and the Employer. 12.19.4 In recognition of the fact that circumstances which call for bereavement leave are based on individual circumstances, the Employer, on request, may grant additional bereavement leave.
Paid Bereavement Leave. An employee shall be entitled to bereavement leave with pay as follows: (a) In the case of the death of an employee's mother, father, brother, sister, child, spouse, legal guardian, grandmother, grandfather, common-law xxxxxx, mother-in-law, father- in-law, grandchild, or near relative living in the same household three (3) days. In the case of the death of an employee's sister-in-law, brother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in- law, one (1) day with pay. For the purpose of this Article, a "common-law spouse" relationship is said to exist when, for a continuous period of at least one (1) year, an employee has lived with a person of the opposite or same sex, publicly represented that person to be his/her spouse and lives and intends to continue to live with that person as if that person were his/her spouse. (b) If the death of a relative referred to in Clause 19.04 (a) and to which three (3) days has been allotted occurs outside the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the employee shall be granted leave with pay not exceeding four (4) days for the purpose of attending the funeral. Such days not to be in addition to those allotted in Clause 19.04 (a). (c) In cases where extraordinary circumstances prevail, the Co-ordinator/Supervisor may grant two (2) additional days other than those referred to in Clause 19.04 (a) and (b).

Paid Bereavement Leave. 1. Five (5) contract leave days shall be granted to a teacher for the purposes of bereavement and\or estate related legal work following the death of a resident of a teacher's household or his/her father, mother, spouse, brother, sister, son, daughter, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, or grandchild. Step relatives will be interpreted in a like manner. 2. Two (2) days leave shall be granted to a teacher for the death of a teacher's or spouse's grandparent, brother-in-law or sister-in-law. Step relatives will be interpreted in a like manner. 3. One (1) day leave shall be granted to a teacher for the death of a teacher's aunt, uncle, first cousin, niece, or nephew. Step relatives will be interpreted in a like manner. 4. In the event of the death of a person for whom the teacher is the legal guardian, the teacher shall have the same leave benefit as if the deceased were a member of the teacher’s immediate family. (The teacher shall be responsible for providing all pertinent and relevant documentation required to satisfy this provision.) Note: The days must be used within one (1) calendar year from the date of death when attending to the legal obligations and are not cumulative.
Paid Bereavement Leave. EMPLOYEES shall be granted a leave with full pay in the event of the death of any member of the EMPLOYEE'S immediate family. The leave shall be for a period of three (3) days, and if Employee chooses and the time off is authorized by the Department Head, two additional days of the Employee's accrued sick leave may be taken. Paid Bereavement Leave a) An Employee, who would otherwise have been at work, is entitled to not more than six (6) consecutively scheduled working days leave of absence with pay and benefits and with continued accumulation of vacation credits, starting no later than the 7th calendar day after the day of death, in the event of the death of his/her parent, spouse, child. b) An Employee, who would otherwise have been at work, is entitled to not more than five (5) consecutively scheduled working days leave of absence with pay and benefits with continued accumulation of vacation credits, starting no later than the 7th calendar day after the day of death, in the event of the death of his/her sibling, current spouse's parent, stepchild, stepparent, grandchild. c) An Employee, who would otherwise have been at work, is entitled to three (3) consecutively scheduled working days leave of absence with pay and benefits and with continued accumulation of vacation credits, starting no later than the 7th calendar day after the day of death, in the event of the death of his/her grandparent. d) Provided that no greater than six (6) bereavement days have been taken within the previous six (6) months (i.e. 182 days from the date of the last bereavement day), an Employee, who would otherwise have been at work, is entitled to one (1) scheduled working day leave of absence with pay and benefits and with continued accumulation of vacation credits, starting no later than the 7th calendar day after the day of death, in the event of the death of his/her aunt, uncle, niece, nephew. e) Documentation indicating the relationship of the Employee to the deceased individual may be required by the Employee's supervisor.
