Bereavement/Funeral Leave. Employees covered by this Agreement shall be allowed one (1) day off without salary deduction for bereavement purposes in the event of the death of any close relative, provided that where attendance at a funeral requires total travel of two hundred (200) miles or more, one (1) additional day with pay shall be allowed; provided further, that the department head may, when circumstances require and upon application stating the reasons therefore, authorize for such purpose not to exceed an additional four (4) days chargeable to the sick leave account of the employee, but no combination of paid absence under this Section shall exceed five (5) days for any one period of absence. In like circumstances and upon like application the department head may authorize for the purpose of attending the funeral of a relative other than a close relative, not to exceed five (5) days chargeable to the sick leave account of an employee. For purposes of this Section, the term "close relative" shall mean the spouse or domestic partner, child, mother, stepmother, father, stepfather, brother, sister, grandchild, grandfather or grandmother of the employee or spouse or domestic partner, and the term "relative other than a close relative" shall mean the uncle, aunt, cousin, niece, nephew, or the spouse or domestic partner of the brother, sister, child or grandchild of the employee or spouse or domestic partner.

Bereavement/Funeral leave may be allowed for bereavement purposes and/or attendance at the funeral of any other person as allowed by City Ordinance. Such persons shall be determined as close relatives or relatives other than close relatives pursuant to the terms of the Ordinance for purposes of determining the extent of bereavement/funeral leave or sick leave allowable as provided above.
Bereavement/Funeral Leave. 28.01 In the event of the death of a member of a full-time employee’s immediate family, the employee will be granted a leave of absence, with pay, to make arrangements for and attend the funeral or memorial service as follows; Immediate family member Consecutive scheduled work days Spouse five (5) Sister/Brother five (5) Parent five (5) Child five (5) Grandchild three (3) Grandparent three (3) Parent of spouse three (3) Son-in-law/Daughter-in-law three (3) Step-parent three (3) Any person who legally acted three (3) in one of the above capacities
28.02 The above days will be scheduled surrounding the funeral or memorial service and the employee will be paid at his or her regular hourly rate for each of the days.
28.03 The term “spouse” will include a common law partner of the same or opposite sex.
28.04 Upon request, an employee will be required to provide satisfactory proof for the bereavement leave request, including the deceased relatives name, name and address of the funeral home and the date of the funeral.
Bereavement/Funeral Leave. For purposes of this local rider the definition of “Immediate Family” set forth in Article 25, Section 3 “Bereavement Leave” of the National Agreement shall be modified to include “grandparents.” Further, notwithstanding the terms of the National Agreement, the provisions relating to “Extended Family” bereavement leave shall not apply to this Local Rider. Finally, notwithstanding the provisions of the National Agreement, for purposes of this Local Rider, bereavement leave is exclusive of Saturdays, Sundays, vacations, and holidays, when not regular work days. Leave shall only be available to part-time employees employed on or before the date of ratification of this Agreement or full-time employees
Bereavement/Funeral Leave. Upon the death of a member of an employee’s family, the employee shall be entitled to three (3) consecutive work days, or a maximum of twenty- four (24) hours, Bereavement/Funeral Leave. Bereavement leave will be granted to parents in case of a miscarriage conditioned upon tendering of appropriate medical documentation, or stillbirth contingent upon tendering a death certificate. This time may be extended with the use of vacation leave, personal leave or sick leave upon the approval of the employee’s supervisor subject to the provisions of Articles 24, 25 and 26 of this Agreement. Bereavement/Funeral Leave. Bereavement or funeral leave may be granted in the event of a serious illness, death of a member of the employee’s immediate family. Up to three (3) twenty- four (24) hour shifts may be granted to a fifty-six (56) hour workweek employee. Bereavement/Funeral leave may be extended at the discretion of the Fire Chief/Administrator. One (1) twenty-four (24) hour shift may be granted to a fifty-six (56) hour workweek employee in the event of a serious illness or death of an employee’s grandparent, grandchild, father-in- law or mother-in-law.

In like circumstances and upon like application the Presiding Judge may authorize for the purpose of attending the funeral/bereavement of a relative other than a close relative, a number of days off work not to exceed five (5) days chargeable to the sick leave account of an employee. For purposes of this Section, the term "close relative" shall mean the spouse or domestic partner, child, mother, stepmother, father, stepfather, brother, sister, grandchild, grandfather or grandmother of the employee or spouse or domestic partner, and the term "relative other than a close relative" shall mean the uncle, aunt, cousin, niece, nephew or the spouse or domestic partner of the brother, sister, child or grandchild of the employee or spouse or domestic partner.
8.2.1 Bereavement/Funeral Leave may be allowed for bereavement purposes and/or attendance at the funeral of any other relative as allowed by Seattle Municipal Code (SMC) 4.28.020. Such relatives shall be determined as close relatives or relatives other than close relatives pursuant to the terms of SMC 4.28.020 for purposes of determining the extent of bereavement/funeral leave or sick leave allowable as provided for in Section 8.2. In the event SMC 4.28.020 is repealed in whole or in part by an initiative, the parties shall renegotiate this provision in accordance with the terms of Article 21.
Bereavement/Funeral Leave. (a) Upon the death of a member of the employee's immediate family, an employee may be granted five (5) work days (including the day of notification) off without loss of pay, within the next eight (8) days, as bereavement leave. The Employer will not unreasonably deny a request for bereavement leave.
(b) Immediate family, for the purposes of Article 22.3(a), is defined as the employee's spouse, children, mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law, step parents and step children, of the employee; and legally appointed guardian.
(c) Upon the death of a member of the employee’s family, an employee may be granted three (3) work days (including the day of notification) off without loss of pay, within the next eight (8) days, as bereavement leave, for the family members specified as brothers, sisters, half-brothers, half-sisters, step brothers and step sisters with whom the employee lives, brothers-in law, sisters- in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and grandparents.
(d) Upon the death of a member of the employee’s family, listed as follows, an employee may be granted one (1) workday, within the next eight (8) days, off without loss of pay, as bereavement leave, but will be required to attend the funeral and if requested, provide documentation that they attended. Family members included are aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, of the employee; spouse’s grandparents and other relatives who permanently reside with the employee
(e) The Employer may require the employee to supply proof of the death and proof of the employee’s relationship to the deceased before payment for bereavement leave is made.
(f) If the employee requires additional time to attend to matters related to the death of a member of the employee’s immediate family, the Employer may permit the employee to use a reasonable period of vacation/annual/personal leave time.
(g) Employees may be granted up to four (4) hours funeral leave, without loss of pay, to either attend or serve as an active pall bearer at the funeral of a co-worker, active or retired, from the same activity, unless the employee is required to maintain system integrity.

Bereavement/Funeral Leave. 20.4.1 Death in the Immediate Family – Leave of up to three (3) days shall be granted if and as required to arrange and attend the funeral. Family is defined as husband, wife, common-law partner, children, mother, father, sister, brother, mother-in-law, father- in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandparents, grandchildren, and any other relative living with the Employee and who is dependent on the Employee or any similar relationship.
20.4.2 An Employee who is entitled to bereavement/funeral leave under Article 20.4.1 during their vacation leave shall receive vacation credits equal to the number of days of bereavement/funeral leave that was granted.
20.4.3 An Employee shall be entitled to bereavement/funeral leave up to a maximum of one
(1) day without loss of salary for attending a funeral as a pallbearer, an honourary pallbearer, a reading, singing, music, eulogy.
20.4.4 An Employee shall be entitled to additional bereavement/funeral leave, up to a maximum of two (2) days, without loss of salary, for the purpose of attending a funeral at a distance of over five hundred kilometres away (one way).
