Career Exploration Leave. The Board may approve an unpaid leave of absence for career exploration purposes if requested by an employee. The Board shall approve any such request, provided that a qualified replacement for the applicant can be obtained from those employees who are either on layoff status or who have received notice of layoff. Such leaves shall be for a period of one (1) full school year.
Career Exploration Leave. A voluntary leave of absence for at least twelve months but no more than fifteen months, without pay, shall be granted by the Board under the following conditions:
Career Exploration Leave i. Upon application, the Board shall grant an unpaid leave of absence for one (1) year (12 months) to any employee for the purpose of career exploration provided that the employee must make application prior to March 15 for the following school year. Upon approval of the Superintendent, the Board will grant a Career Exploration Leave at other times for up to one (1) year (12 months.
Career Exploration Leave i. Internal Career Exploration Leaves: Upon application, the District shall grant a leave of absence for up to one (1) calendar year to any employee for the purpose of career exploration within the Grand Rapids Public Schools System.
Career Exploration Leave. A leave of absence without pay for up to two (2) years will be granted to any teacher with Professional Teacher Status for career exploration. Career Exploration Leave shall be granted only for full school years. The Superintendent may deny Career Exploration Leave, which is requested in order that the employee may take another full time teaching position in Grades K - 12. A teacher who desires a Career Exploration Leave shall apply in writing to the Superintendent no later than January 31 of the school year preceding the school year in which the teacher desires to take the Career Exploration Leave of Absence. No later than March 1 of the school year in which the Career Exploration Leave of Absence expires, the teacher on said leave must notify the Superintendent, in writing by certified mail, return receipt, of their intention to return to work in the Franklin Public Schools. Delivery to Superintendent’s office represents receipt. Any employee on a Career Exploration Leave of Absence who fails to notify the Superintendent, in writing, by March 1 of the school year preceding the expected date of return shall be deemed to have resigned. No more than five (5) percent but not less than ten (10) people (whichever is greater) of the bargaining unit may be on a Career Exploration Leave of Absence during any one school year. In the event the number of applicants in any category exceeds the above limits, the Superintendent shall select from among said applicants on the basis of the date of earliest application. The Superintendent may grant Career Exploration Leave to applicants in excess of the limits described under this section if it is deemed to be in the best interests of the school system.

Career Exploration Leave. 27.1 Up to five (5) employees in the bargaining unit shall be granted leave of absence without pay for purposes of career exploration. Such leave may be extended for an additional year at the discretion of the Superintendent and the School Committee and their decision is not grievable. Any employee may apply for a one (1) year leave of absence without pay and a one (1) year renewal thereof which shall be subject to the approval of the Superintendent and School Committee and such approval is not grievable.

Upon return from such leave, the teacher will be assigned to a position for which the teacher is certified and qualified. No salary or benefits shall accrue during the leave.

Such request shall indicate the date of return, and such date must coincide with a new marking period. Upon return from such leave, the teacher will be assigned to a position for which the teacher is certified and qualified. No salary or benefits shall accrue during the leave. The term “career exploration” is intended to be the temporary experience working in a business, industry, organization, or institution outside of the field of education, for which the experience gained by the member upon return from such leave will be useful in linking classroom teaching and learning for students to real world jobs and careers. Any requests for leave for this purpose will be the subject to review of the superintendent and approval by the Board of Education. If approved, the member will be expected to return on the date stipulated by the Board of Education approval and their failure to report will be considered a voluntary resignation. Extenuating circumstances may be presented to the board for board approval.
