Extended Unpaid Leaves of Absence. 1. Academic Study A certified employee who has been in USD No. 321 for three (3) consecutive years may receive a one-year unpaid leave for academic study, provided approval is granted by the Board of Education upon recommendation of the superintendent. Application for academic leaves which are to be effective at the beginning of a school year shall be made on or before May 15. Applications for academic leaves which are to be effective at a time other than at the beginning of a school year shall be made three (3) months before the requested effective leave date. In the event that the above dates for application are not met, instructors shall still receive consideration of their application and academic leaves may be granted except where such leave would cause a hardship on the school district. On application a general outline of the program for the year's leave must be submitted to the superintendent. If the leave is approved, the program may be changed with the consent of the Board of Education. Employees on academic leave must notify the superintendent by March 15 of the ensuing year as to their plans for the following academic year. The superintendent may upon request extend the leave up to one year. Reinstatement will be at a salary level no lower than the salary the teacher would have received the next contract year. Sick or personal leave that has accrued previous to approved leave shall be reinstated. Additional sick leave or personal leave shall not be granted for the period of the leave. Upon return the employee will be assigned to the same or a comparable position to that held prior to such leave.
Extended Unpaid Leaves of Absence. 1. While on any Extended Unpaid Leave of Absence not covered by Family Medical Leave Act, all daily compensation and benefits are withheld, with the employee given the option to continue district health insurance at the full cost of the monthly premium. The employee will be responsible for paying the district each month an amount sufficient to pay the full insurance premiums if the teacher chooses to continue coverage. 2. Upon completion of the leave, an Employee granted any Extended Leave of Absence, of one full school year or less, should be reinstated to his/her former position or comparable certified position. For any Extended Leave of Absence, the employee must work a minimum of 50% of that school year’s work days to accumulate seniority or advance on the salary schedule for that current school year. Those employees that do not work a minimum of 50% of that school year’s work days shall not earn seniority or advance on the salary schedule for that year.
Extended Unpaid Leaves of Absence. The Board, in its sole discretion, may grant a leave of absence without pay for the purposes specified herein below. All such leaves shall be subject to the general conditions set forth in Section M of this Article. 1. Exchange teaching programs in other states, territories, countries; 2. Formal approved education programs designed to acquire additional course credit that is related to a teacher’s current assignment as solely determined by the Superintendent; 3. Foreign, military or government sponsored programs; 4. Cultural travel or work programs related to professional activities; 5. Health and hardship; 6. In accordance with GEA Sick Bank as required (Appendix C); 7. Other good reasons.

Any teacher desiring a leave of absence without pay must submit to the Board or the Superintendent an application in writing at least sixty (60) calendar days before the desired date for the commencement of the leave, stating the reasons for the request and the expected duration of the leave. A leave of absence shall be granted for any of the following reasons or purposes: illness, military, study, childcare for an anticipated or actual childbirth or adoption, government and professional service, educational growth or for such other reasons as the Board, in its discretion, may approve. In emergency cases the Superintendent shall waive the sixty (60) calendar days if the teacher submits in writing an explanation with proper verification and/or documentation indicating the events, occasions or occurrences beyond the control of the teacher who requested that the sixty (60) day period be waived. 2. No leave under this Section shall exceed one (1) school year unless an extension thereof is requested by the teacher in writing, recommended by the Superintendent, and approved by the Board in writing. Extended Unpaid Leaves of Absence. 1. The employee shall make written application for leave, stating the date on which requested leave is to begin and the estimated date on which leave is to terminate. 2. The date of return to work shall normally be September 1, but may be adjusted by the Board by request of the individual. The leave shall not exceed eighteen (18) months without prior approval. 3. When a leave has been granted, the Board cannot guarantee upon return to work, the employee will be assigned to the same building, class, room, or grade the employee was assigned before the leave. 4. If an employee, who is granted an extended leave of absence, works at least one hundred and twenty (120) school days in the school year, the employee shall advance on the salary guide and will receive the full increment on the salary scale the following year. If the employee has worked more than ninety (90) school days in the school year, but less than one hundred and twenty (120), then the employee shall be granted fifty (50) percent of the normal increment for the following year, and move one-half (½) step on the salary guide. If the employee works ninety (90) or less school days in the school year, the employee will not advance on the salary guide. 5. Unused accumulated sick leave and personal days shall be restored to the employee upon return from leave of absence. Sick/personal days, continuous service credit for tenure, and other purposes shall not accrue during leave of absence. 6. The Board shall not be required to continue the leave of absence of the nontenured employee beyond the school year for which he/she was hired, or to offer tenure, or a new contract to a nontenured employee. 7. An unpaid leave of absence for a reason recognized under the New Jersey Family Leave Act shall be counted as time permitted under said Act.
Extended Unpaid Leaves of Absence. A seniority Member with the Board may be granted a leave of absence without pay of one full year. The Member may request an extension of the leave for one (1) additional full year. Application of the Unpaid Leave shall be done through the Member’s supervisor and the Manager of Human Resources. An extension beyond two years will not be granted. A request for the leave should be submitted in writing to the Member’s supervisor and the Manager of Human Resources, including the nature of the leave, prior to April 1st in the year prior to the school year in which the leave will begin. Requests received after this date due to extenuating circumstances will be considered on an individual basis. Eligibility for benefits will be in accordance with the Trust. Upon return from the leave, the Member shall be placed in the assignment held prior to the commencement of the leave if it is still available, or if it is not, be placed in a position in the same geographic area in accordance with Article 11- Lay-off and Recall procedures as outlined in the agreement. Seniority shall not be interrupted. In the year of a leave of absence, the Member shall notify the Board by April 1st, in writing, confirming the Member’s intention to return the following year.
