Surviving Spouse Benefits. In the event of the retired employee's death, the Employer will continue to pay its share of the cost of the health insurance protection for the surviving spouse for a period of twelve (12) months. During the period of time that a retired employee is employed by another employer that provides comparable health insurance, the Employer shall have no obligation to provide such benefits. If the benefits are not comparable, the Employer shall pay the retired employee the difference between its cost of providing the health insurance protection and the cost of the health insurance provided by the new employer. As a condition of receiving these benefits, the retired employee must promptly inform the Employer of any changes in his or her employment status and the name, address, and phone number of any employer.

In lieu of the monthly pension otherwise payable to an employee who retires under Section (5) or (7) or (8) of this Pension Plan or who loses his seniority and is entitled to a pension under Section (6), the employee shall automatically be deemed to have elected a reduced monthly pension payable during his lifetime after the effective date of his election, terminating with the last monthly payment before his death, with the provision that if his death occurs on or after the effective date of his election and if the person who was his spouse on such date is living at his death, a pension in the amount specified below shall be payable monthly thereafter to such person during her lifetime, terminating with the last monthly payment before her death. 2. This automatic election shall be deemed to have been made at the time that the employee applies for a monthly pension under Section (5), (6), (7) or (8), and the effective date of the election shall be the date his monthly pension commences except as follows: (a) In the case of an employee who is married when his election would otherwise become effective but whose marriage at that date has been continuously in effect for less than one year, the effective date of his election shall be the first day of the month following the month in which such marriage has been continuously in effect for one year. The automatic election provided in this Paragraph A. shall be applicable only with respect to an employee who is married on the date the election shall be deemed to have been made. (b) An employee who retires under the applicable sections of this Pension Plan or who retired under the applicable sections of the Prior Pension Plan who marries or remarries, subsequent to the earliest date surviving spouse coverage was in effect, or was not in effect on such date solely because the retired employee was not then married, may elect, or re-elect, surviving spouse coverage. Any such coverage, and the benefits there under, shall be provided under the terms and conditions of the Pension Plan in effect at the time of the employee’s retirement. Such coverage shall become effective on the first day of the third month following the month in which the Board of Administration receives a completed election form, but in no event before the first day of the month following the month in which the retired employee has been married one year. Surviving Spouse Benefits. The spouse of each Police Officer, shall be covered for health benefits per the following: A. If a Police Officer is killed in the line of duty, the surviving spouse and children will be covered until remarriage. B. If a Police Officer dies, not in the line of duty, the surviving spouse and children will be covered until remarriage; and: (1) Benefits provided herein shall cease if the spouse remarries or fails to re- establish the claim each year with the Township Financial Officer. (2) Dependents under this coverage shall have the same qualifications as in the terms of other coverage provisions. Dependents shall be covered under 23 years of age provided that if said dependents are over 19 years of age and under 23 years of age they are matriculated in an accredited educational institution and are actively pursuing a degree or certification program. C. After retirement, when a Police Officer, predeceases a spouse, the surviving spouse will be covered until remarriage. In addition to regular salary, each Officer shall receive $.55 per hour for every hour worked on the 3rd shift and $.65 per hour for every hour worked on the 1st shift.
Surviving Spouse Benefits. The surviving spouse of a bargaining unit member who dies while employed with the District and who was enrolled in the District's benefit package at the time of death will be entitled to purchase, at the District's premium rate, the same health care, prescription or dental coverage as the bargaining unit member would be entitled under the following conditions: 1. The surviving spouse who is eligible must purchase the entire package set forth above, except that dental may be purchased separately. 2. The surviving spouse who is eligible, will be entitled to purchase the coverages available under the current collective bargaining agreement as such coverages may change from time to time. The surviving spouse eligible for this benefit is entitled to purchase the same level of coverage (individual, two party, or family) which was in effect at the time of the death of the employee. 3. The surviving spouse, who is eligible, must enroll within forty-five (45) days following the date of the bargaining unit member's death. 4. Once enrolled, the surviving spouse must remain enrolled until coverage is terminated. 5. Coverage will terminate if the surviving spouse: (a) Remarries; or (b) Is eligible for Medicare; or (c) Drops enrollment; or (d) Is eligible for comparable (substantially similar) coverage elsewhere. The surviving spouse is obligated to notify the District immediately if any of the above events occur. 6. Termination of coverage for whatever reason will occur on the first day of the month following the event causing termination. 7. The provisions of this Section shall be subject to modifications caused by rules and regulations related to Social Security, Medicare, the insurance carrier, and is subject to approval of the carriers.
