ORIENTATION AND INSERVICE. 20.01 An orientation and inservice program will be provided to all employees; these programs shall be reviewed and discussed from time to time by members of the Union-Management Committee. The Committee will promote an environment that supports continuous learning, enhances opportunities for career development and will assist in the assessment, analysis, development and evaluation of the education programs at the facility.
20.02 A newly employed employee shall not be placed in charge, until she has been fully oriented to the home.
20.03 The following minimums shall be observed in the orientation/familiarization of a newly-hired employee:
(a) She is to be familiarized with the physical aspects of the building, the applicable policies and procedures of the employer, and the daily routine of employees in the Home.
(b) The period of orientation/familiarization shall be for a minimum of five (5) days or such greater period that the Employer deems necessary.
(c) She shall be an additional employee to the usual staffing pattern.
(d) The employee or employees involved in the orientation/familiarization will confirm that it has been completed, and this will be noted on the newly- hired employee's personnel file, which will be reviewed with such employee, and the employee shall also be able to comment.
(e) The employee may request up to three (3) additional days of paid orientation. When making her request, the employee will specify her learning needs and discuss with the Director of Care the development of the orientation learning plan. This request will not be unreasonably denied.
(f) Notwithstanding the above, orientation/familiarization when an employee is transferred to a new unit/shift will be provided as required.
(g) The Employer may, at its discretion, provide orientation in other circumstances.
20.04 Both the Employer and the Union recognize the joint responsibility and commitment to provide, and participate in, in-service education. The Union supports the principle of its members' responsibility for their own professional development and the Employer will endeavour to provide programmes related to the requirements of the Home. Programmes will be publicized and related material will be made readily accessible to staff in a timely manner. Any problems in accessing this information will be reported to the Union- Management Committee for resolution.

10.02 Employees who displace other employees in the event of a long-term layoff, employees recalled from layoff, employees whose probationary period has been extended under Article 12.01, and employees who are transferred on a permanent basis may be provided any orientation determined necessary by the Employer for the purposes of allowing the employee to assume satisfactorily the duties of such position. A request by such an employee for orientation shall not be unreasonably denied.
10.03 Both the Employer and the Union recognize their joint responsibility and commitment to provide, and to participate in, in-service education. The Union supports the principle of its members’ responsibility for their own professional development and the Employer will endeavour to provide programs related to the requirements of the Employer. Such programs will be publicized.
10.04 When an employee is on duty and is authorized to attend any in-service program within the workplace and during her/his regularly scheduled working hours the employee shall suffer no loss of regular pay. Should the Employer require an employee to acquire upgraded or specific skills on the work unit, the Employer will pay for attendance at such training at regular wages and will also pay for tuition and materials.

(b) Both the Employer and the Union recognize their joint responsibility and commitment to provide, and to participate in, in-service education. The Union supports the principle of its members’ responsibility for their own professional development and the Employer will endeavour to provide programs related to the requirements of the Employer. Available programs will be publicized and the Employer will endeavour to provide employees with opportunities to attend such programs during their regularly scheduled working hours, subject to operational requirements of the Hospital.

20.02 Time spent at orientation or inservice programmes when the employee is required by the Employer shall be paid at the straight time rate of pay.
20.03 A newly employed employee shall be entitled to orientation and shall not be placed in charge until she has been fully oriented to the Home, and to the area where she will be working.
20.04 The following minimums are to be observed in the orientation - familiarization of an employee:
(a) She is to be familiarized with the physical aspects of the building, the applicable policies and procedures of the Employer, and the daily routine of the employees within the same classification in the Home;
(b) A period of orientation-familiarization shall be at least two (2) shifts on the day shift and one (1) shift on the night shift or evening shift.
(c) She shall be an additional employee to the usual staffing pattern;
(d) The employee or employees involved in the orientation - familiarization will confirm that it has been completed, and this will be noted on the newly hired employee's personnel file, which will be reviewed with such employee, and the employee shall also be able to comment.
ORIENTATION AND INSERVICE. 22.01 It is agreed that an orientation and in-service program will be provided in order to familiarize newly hired nurses with the Health Unit and update present nurses as to changes in theory, procedure and practices.
22.02 The period of orientation to the Health Unit will be a minimum of two weeks.
ORIENTATION AND INSERVICE. 21.01 The Home recognizes the need for a Home Orientation Program of such duration as it may deem appropriate, taking into consideration the needs of the Home and the Nurses involved.
21.02 A newly employed Nurse shall not be placed in charge until she/he has been fully oriented to the Home and to the area where she/he will be working.
21.03 Both the Home and the Union recognize their joint responsibility and commitment to provide and participate in in-service education. The Union supports the principle of its member’s responsibility for their own professional development and the Home will endeavour to provide programs related to the requirements of the Home. Available programs will be publicized and the Home will endeavour to provide Nurses with opportunities to attend such programs during their regularly scheduled working hours.
(a) When a Nurse is required by the Employer to attend any in-service program or e-learning within the Home during her or his regularly scheduled working hours the Nurse shall suffer no loss of regular pay.
(b) When a Nurse is required by the Employer to prepare for in service or to attend meetings, in service and other work related functions same, she shall be paid for all time spent on such attendance at her regular straight time hourly rate of pay or at the Nurse's option, she shall receive equivalent time off. When a Nurse is required by the Employer to complete a e-learning programme outside her regularly scheduled working hours, she shall be paid for all time spent completing such learning at her regular straight time hourly rate of pay or at the Nurse's option, she shall receive equivalent time off. Part-time Nurses will be credited with seniority and service for all such hours paid as provided above while in attendance at in-services, meetings, and completing e-learning.
(c) The Employer will endeavour where practical to schedule in-services at times which will facilitate the attendance of Nurses working outside the day shift.
21.05 The Home agrees that when changes in its operating and technical methods or practices require additional knowledge or skill on the part of the Nurses, such Nurses will be given the opportunity to study and practice to acquire knowledge and skill necessary to carry out these responsibilities.
ORIENTATION AND INSERVICE. (a) The Home recognizes the need for a Home Orientation Programme.
(b) The following minimums shall be observed in the orientation/familiarization of a newly hired employee:
ORIENTATION AND INSERVICE. 22.01 In its aim to provide highest quality visiting nursing care VON recognizes the need for programs to assist the nurses' professional growth. These shall include:
(a) a staff in-service program;
(b) when a nurse is on duty and required by VON to attend any in-service program during her regularly scheduled working hours, she shall not lose her regular straight time earnings;
(c) when a nurse is required by VON to attend any in-service program, conference or workshop outside her regularly scheduled working hours, she shall be paid for time spent in attendance at such program at her regular straight time hourly rate of pay. If a mandatory certification or in- service program is not available through the Employer, costs in obtaining this mandatory program will be covered by the employer.
(d) Available in-service programs, workshops and conferences will be posted so that members may apply to attend. Nurses will be given the opportunity to attend in a fair and equitable manner.

20.03 The following principles shall be incorporated in the orientation/familiarization of a newly hired nurse:
(a) She is to be familiarized with the physical aspects of the building, the applicable policies and procedures of the Employer, and the daily routine of nurses in the Home.
(b) She shall be an additional nurse to the usual staffing pattern.
(c) The nurse(s) involved in the orientation will confirm that it has been completed, and this will be noted on the newly hired nurse's personnel file, which will be reviewed with such nurse, and the nurse shall also be able to comment.
20.04 An ongoing in-service education programme shall be based on the following principals:
(a) The learning needs identified by the Association- Management Committee.
(b) It shall be a planned programme to update nurses as to changes in procedures or practices.
(c) All inservice education programmes shall be scheduled in a manner which will allow all nurse(s) to attend during working hours in two (2) or three (3) sessions over a period of three (3) months. Nurses required to attend such programs outside their working hours shall be paid at their regular rate of pay for all time so spent.
