Personal/Family Illness. Each full-time teacher in the bargaining unit shall be entitled to be absent from work on account of personal or family illness or quarantine for a total of ten (10) days the first year employed, and ten (10) days each year thereafter accumulative to a maximum of one hundred thirteen (113) days. If any teacher has accumulated one (1) or more days of sick leave in another public school corporation in the State of Indiana and shall thereupon become employed by the Northwest Indiana Special Education Cooperative, then there shall be added for the second and each succeeding year of such employment, up to three (3) sick leave days until the number of accumulated days to which the teacher was entitled inthe last place of employment shall be exhausted. Family, as used in this section, is defined as the teacher's spouse, parents, children, brother, sister or person living the same house as part of the family.

Personal/Family Illness. All Employees are allowed sick leave for personal/family illness or injury, according to the following schedule: The first year of employment 10 days The second year of employment 11 days The third year of employment 12 days The fourth year of employment 13 days The fifth year of employment 14 days The sixth and subsequent years of employment 15 days Part-time Employees will be allotted sick leave days in the same proportion as the amount of time they are employed. If an Employee does not need to use his/her allotted days during the year, the unused days may be accumulated to one hundred twenty-five (125) days. After reporting for work the next year, the Employee will be credited with the current year’s fifteen (15) days, so that up to one hundred forty days (140) days may be used in one year if necessary. However, no more than 125 days may be carried forward to a subsequent year. An Employee granted sick/family leave on parent/teacher conference or professional development days may require a doctor’s certificate. Personal/Family Illness can be used for employee, spouse, significant other, child, parent, step-parent, grandchildren, legal dependent, brothers, sisters, or corresponding relatives of the employee’s spouse who require medical constant long-term care or hospitalization (Superintendent may request doctor verification) or legal dependent. At the beginning of each school year by September 15th, an unmarried employee wishing to designate a “significant other” must register the individual as a significant other with the Central Office.

An employee who is unable to work because of personal/family illness or injury and who has exhausted his/her accumulated sick leave, shall be granted an unpaid leave of absence for the balance of the contract year in which his/her accumulated sick leave has been exhausted or for the period of time specified in the Family and Medical Leave Act, whichever is longer. Sick leave for any length of time may require a doctor’s certificate. In any case, a doctor’s certificate must be presented whenever sick leave is requested for more than five (5) days. Part-time employees will be allotted personal/family illness days in the same proportion as the amount of time they are employed. Absences for personal illness and family illness shall be allowed and shall include full pay for seventeen (17) school days in each school year for ten- month administrators and twenty (20) school days in each school year for twelve-month administrators. b. If less than said seventeen (17) school days for ten month administrators and (20) school days for twelve month administrators of allowed sick leave is taken in any school year, then the number of days not utilized shall be accumulative without limit, beginning from the date of the administrator’s current continuous employment by the Board, to be available for additional sick leave in subsequent school years. c. Absences for sick leave shall always be charged to the first seventeen (17) or twenty (20) days allowance for the current school year (see subsection "a") until they are fully utilized and thereafter to the accumulative credit to the extent that such credit is available. d. In all absences under this section totaling three (3) or more consecutive school days, the administrator must file a physician’s certificate with the Division of Labor Relations and Employment Services. e. The Board reserves the right to require a doctor's certificate after one (1) day's absence due to illness, f. The Board reserves the right to have its medical officer verify the private doctor's findings on school time with expenses paid by the Board.

Notice that the teacher is personally ill will be sufficient to invoke the application of this article. Family, as used in this section, is defined as the teacher’s spouse, parents, children, brother, sister or person living in the same house as part of the family.
