Funeral Leave/Bereavement Leave. In the event of death of a sibling, parent in-law, sibling in-law, grandparent, grandchild, or any relative living in the household of the employee, the Employer will grant up to three (3) paid days compassionate Leave of Absence. This leave will be granted to attend the funeral and such time off must be taken at the time of bereavement or the time of service. In the event of death of spouse, parent/legal guardian, or child, the employee shall be entitled to one (1) week's leave of absence with pay at the time of bereavement. It is understood that in the case of a part-time employee, the compensation shall be at the average hours worked during the preceding four (4) weeks. Should an employee’s entitlement to the one (1) week’s leave of absence with pay occur while the employee is on vacation, the employee’s week of vacation will be re-scheduled at some later date as mutually agreed between the employee and the Employer. An employee's day off will not be altered to circumvent funeral leave benefits. This leave may be extended for up to five (5) working days by using vacation time, A.T.O. and/or unpaid leave. Employees may request up to five (5) working days of vacation time, A.T.O. or unpaid leave for time off in the event of death of other family members not listed above.

If a death occurs among members of an employee's immediate family, the employee shall be granted three (3) days paid funeral leave/bereavement leave without loss of pay, benefits, days off, holidays or vacation time. Immediate family for this section holds the same definition as in Article 24 of this Agreement in addition to include: child-in-law, sibling, step-sibling, sibling-in-law, grandparent-in-law, aunt-in-law, uncle-in-law, other family member residing with or a dependent of the employee, and significant other living with the employee. Funeral leave may be extended at the discretion of the Chief of Police, based on individual circumstances. Any granted extension of funeral leave/bereavement leave beyond the original three (3) paid days shall be charged to the employee's sick leave.
Funeral Leave/Bereavement Leave. 12.1 Employees may use up to a maximum of three (3) days of accumulated sick leave, if necessary, for bereavement for a death in the employee’s family or the death of a person of significance to the employee when such absences are approved by their supervisor. If an employee chooses, they can opt to use accumulated compensatory time, use personal time, or take an unpaid leave of absence.

A Sergeant will be granted paid funeral / bereavement leave up to a maximum of three (3) working days (twenty-four (24) hours) for the death of an immediate family member. A Sergeant who needs to utilize funeral / bereavement leave must notify the Chief of Police as soon as possible. "Immediate family member" in this context is defined to be: spouse, father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, mother-in-law or father-in-law. Funeral / bereavement leave for certain extended family members not covered in the above definition such as an uncle, aunt, step parent, or grandparent of a spouse may be granted with the approval of the Chief of Police.
