Unpaid Leaves of Absences. A. The Tenure Act states that a Board may grant a leave of absence upon the written request of a teacher for a period of up to one year subject to renewal at the will of the Board. B. The following conditions shall apply to extended leaves of absence contained in this ARTICLE: Requests for leaves shall be in writing. 1. All extended leaves shall be limited to one (1) year. Further extensions shall be at the will of the Board. 2. Salary increments shall accrue for leaves listed in Sections C and E below. 3. Sick leave days shall not accrue but unused sick leave days held at the start of the leave shall be reinstated. 4. In scheduling a leave of absence, the Board may consider all factors relating to the effect upon students and the economic situations for the teacher; including, but not limited to, the time of year, continuity of education, length of the leave, availability of qualified replacements, grade level, subject, and so forth. 5. Failure to return at the end of a leave will constitute voluntary termination of employment. The teacher must give one (1) week's notice of return for each month of leave. 6. The granting of a leave to a non-tenured teacher shall be at the discretion of the Board. C. A teacher may be granted a leave without pay for a period not to exceed one (1) year for full time overseas duty in the Peace Corps, for the purpose of participating in exchange teaching programs in other districts or states, or foreign or military teaching programs. D. Upon written application, a leave of absence for up to one (1) year may be granted without pay for study related to the teacher's licensed field or his/her professional growth. E. Leave for teachers who are drafted into the military service will be granted in accordance with the requirements of the State of Michigan Law. A teacher affected by this leave must return to his/her teaching duties at the beginning of the school year nearest his/her discharge date from military service, except in case of physical and mental in capabilities and/or dishonorable discharge. Every effort shall be made to place returning teachers with physical handicaps. A teacher who received dishonorable discharge will not be considered for placement. Returning teachers shall be eligible for placement in the same salary bracket which they would have attained during their leave without loss of seniority. Unpaid Leaves of Absences. At the discretion of the Employer, leaves of absence may be granted for the following reasons: Childcare, President's Leave, Exchange, Writing, Travel, Study, Health and Sabbatical.
Unpaid Leaves of Absences. Sick and emergency leave is not earned/accrued when an employee is on unpaid leave of absence but the employee does not forfeit sick and emergency leave earned/accrued prior to the start of the leave. An accrual adjustment is made for the first month of unpaid absence using the procedure in section e above.
Unpaid Leaves of Absences. The application for unpaid leave of absence would require Board approval to consider the request for leave of absence. The approval or denial of such unpaid leave is controlled by the contract and the facts before the Board at the time of the request. Should a teacher exhaust his/her FMLA benefits within the last thirty (30) workdays of a school year, the Board shall continue paying its share of the health insurance premiums through the summer months.

Unpaid Leaves of Absences. 1. Bargaining unit members may request an unpaid leave of absence by making proper application to the Superintendent and Board. Such leave may be granted at the sole discretion of the Board. No leave of absence shall extend beyond the term of such member’s employment contract or for a period of two (2) years, whichever comes sooner. The granting of an unpaid leave of absence shall not toll the running of the bargaining unit member’s employment contract during the term of such leave. 2. The application for such leave shall indicate the dates such leave shall terminate. No leave shall terminate prior to the date set forth in the application without the approval of the Superintendent. Such bargaining unit member shall notify the Superintendent in writing on or before April l immediately preceding the termination of said leave certifying that such member shall return to duty on the date the leave expires. Except for good cause shown, failure to so notify the Superintendent as required herein shall void the employment contract of such member and extinguish all rights and privileges of employment. 3. If the purpose of the leave of absence is for illness or other disability, the leave may be granted for greater than two (2) years. A physician’s certification that such leave is necessary for the health of the bargaining unit member will be required.
Unpaid Leaves of Absences. A teacher on an unpaid leave will submit in writing, to the office of the Superintendent, a letter stating their interest and ability to return to work by April 15th of the school year (if the intent is to return to work for the beginning of a new school year, August). Notwithstanding a request to extend an unpaid leave of absence, a teacher not notifying the district of their intent to return to work the following school year by April 15th, will have their name removed from the seniority list at the end of that workday. In the event the teacher plans to return to the beginning of the second semester or third trimester, having been out the previous semester or trimester, a letter must be directed to the office of the Superintendent at least thirty (30) days prior to the end of the first semester or second trimester of their intent on returning to work.
Unpaid Leaves of Absences. Leaves of absence without pay may be granted to tenured teachers and to post-probationary, twelve month, extended, and school year ESPs who have rendered satisfactory service to the district. Any of these employees granted such leave shall be returned to employment in a similar capacity at the termination of such leave provided the employee follows Section C below. A.
