Funeral/Bereavement Leave. A. The employee shall be granted a maximum of five (5) paid leave days per death in the immediate family. "Immediate Family" shall be defined for purposes of this Section as spouse, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, brother, sister, and any legal dependents. Employees using more than three (3) working days of bereavement leave for a death in the immediate family shall, in advance of utilizing such additional days, notify the Employer of the circumstances necessitating the utilization of the maximum five (5) days leave limit for this purpose.

Funeral/Bereavement Leave. In the case of a recent death (within last 12 months) in the employee's immediate family, the employee shall be allowed time off work without loss of pay not to exceed a total of three (3) days (not required to be consecutive), for the purpose of attending the funeral or memorial service, making necessary arrangements, family support or other similar reasons. Additional accrued leave can be taken in conjunction with funeral/bereavement leave. For the purposes of Funeral/Bereavement leave, immediate family shall be defined as spouse, domestic partner, son (biological, step or adopted), daughter (biological, step or adopted), mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, daughter-in- law, son-in-law. Such Funeral/Bereavement Leave shall be charged as Funeral/Bereavement Leave and shall not be charged against any of the Employee's leave accounts.
Funeral/Bereavement Leave. Section 1. An employee shall be granted up to three work days of leave of absence with pay for bereavement in the event of the death of any person residing in the employee's household or any member of the immediate family of either the employee or the employee’s spouse. Section 2. The immediate family shall be defined as the spouse, child, parent, xxxxxx parents, sister, sister-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, stepfather, stepmother, stepchildren, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, grandparents, and grandchildren. (Xxxxxx parent means the individual who provided parental care for the member or spouse during a major portion of the pre-adult years.) Section 3. A five work day leave of absence with pay shall be granted for attendance at an out-of-state funeral for an immediate family member as defined in Section 2. Such employee may be granted, at the discretion of the Sheriff, additional time for funeral leave which shall be charged to the employee’s accrued vacation or compensatory leave banks. Section 4. An employee may also use funeral/bereavement leave provided in this Article for the attendance of a funeral for a member of the immediate family of either the member or the member’s spouse when the immediate family member is killed in combat while serving in the U.S. military or is killed in the line of duty while serving as a law enforcement or corrections officer. For purposes of this Section only, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews are included in the definition of immediate family, as well as those other family members listed in Section 2.
Funeral/Bereavement Leave. An Employee shall be granted a leave of absence without loss of pay for up to three (3) consecutive scheduled work days (unless other arrangements are made between the Employee and Supervisor) at his/her request in case of death in the immediate family or member of the household. If the deceased relative is at a distance requiring special travel, up to an additional two (2) consecutive scheduled work days shall be allowed without loss of pay. The total time away from work shall not exceed seven (7) calendar days. Funeral/Bereavement Leave. In the event of death of a brother, sister, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in- law, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, or any relative living in the household of the employee, the Employer will grant up to three (3) paid days compassionate Leave of Absence. This leave will be granted to attend the funeral and such time off must be taken at the time of bereavement. In the event of death of spouse, father, mother, or child, the employee shall be entitled to one (1) week’s leave of absence with pay at the time of bereavement. It is understood that in the case of a part-time employee, the compensation shall be at the average hours worked during the preceding four (4) weeks. An employee’s day off will not be used to circumvent funeral leave provisions. This leave may be extended, with the agreement of the Employer, by using vacation time.

"Immediate Family" shall be defined, for purposes of this section, as spouse, significant other, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, brother, sister, any legal dependents, and anyone living in the same household. The employee shall be granted one (1) day paid leave per death for other relatives. "Other Relatives" shall be defined as aunt, uncle, cousin, nephew, xxxxx, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, or person to whom the employee was engaged to marry. Additional leave may be granted in special cases, such as for travel time. This time shall be granted without pay, only by approval of the Employer, unless the employee elects to use sick leave time for the aforementioned. Should a holiday fall during a bereavement leave, it will not extend the bereavement leave allowed. Unused funeral/bereavement leave shall not be cumulative. For a funeral involving a present or former employee, or where the employee serves as a pallbearer, the bargaining unit member will be allowed up to four (4) hours to attend. The bargaining unit member, in such circumstances, will make up lost time with an equal amount of compensatory time, or elect to utilize unused sick leave. The Employer reserves the right to limit the number of bargaining unit members absent under this provision on a given day. This leave shall be used within 30 days of the death of the family member unless given special permission by the superintendent or designee.

The days of leave provided for in this article will be paid, provided that they are taken consecutively and include the day of the funeral and provided that they correspond to scheduled days of work for the employee. Employees may split their entitled time off between bereavement and time of service.
