CAW. The CAW is a union representing workers in many different industries, including the auto industry, the aerospace industry, metal manufacturing, mining, airlines, railways, fishing and the hotel, restaurant and service industries. We represent workers employed by big and small companies. Some of these operations were previously non-union, others were formerly represented by American based Unions. We have been a leader in the growing trend in Canada to Canadian-controlled unions and away from the U.S. controlled unions that dominated our labour movement at the time of our formation. CAW LOCAL114 Our combined Local is a large composite Local of bargaining units and more than 2,500 members in 80 workplaces. Our members make such diverse products as trucks, batteries, furnaces, saws, paints, plastics and culverts, windows, hot tubs, and of course lead and lead oxide. As well, we represent members employed in the courier and warehousing industry, hotel workers, and a number of different bus drivers. WHAT WE STAND FOR Our Union has been founded on three basic principles: Canadian Unionism, Democratic Unionism and Effective Unionism. Canadian Unionism: Our Union is fully controlled by dues paying members. All decisions affecting the structure and finances of the Union are made by and for Canadians. Many of our members have joined us after leaving U.S. controlled unions. Democratic Unionism: Our structure as outlined in our constitution provides many safeguards to ensure the rank-and-file membership, not the full-time staff, control the union. Democracy is the only effective means of uniting workers and presenting a solid front needed to bargain effectively. Effective Unionism: Whether it be negotiating contracts, handling grievances or providing health and safety training, CAW is acknowledged for its effective representation of our membership. SOME OF OUR POLICIES - We support the principle of equal pay for work of equal value and oppose discrimination in the workplace. - We support the building of a sovereign labour movement in Canada while also promoting cooperation with workers from other countries. SERVICES TO MEMBERS Health and Safety: We have training sessions for members serving on health and safety committees. We work with various governments to assist in developing better safety and health legislation.
