Teacher Work Load. Employee workload shall be as follows:
(a) Class size
Teacher Work Load. A. The secondary school day can consist of 6 class periods, none of which will be longer than 56 minutes nor shorter than 40 minutes, or a school day can consist of full block classes, none of which will be longer than 88 minutes nor shorter than 79 minutes and half-block classes, none of which will be longer than 45 minutes nor shorter than 44 minutes. A full time teacher's total instructional time may range from a maximum of 270 minutes to a minimum of 259 minutes. The secondary school day may also consist of 7 class periods, none of which will be longer than 56 minutes nor shorter than 50 minutes. In the 7-period format, a full-time teacher's total instructional time may range from a maximum of 312 minutes to a minimum of 300 minutes. The elementary teacher's preparation time when the specialized teachers are in the classroom shall continue to be equivalent to no less than the current two (2) hours every seven (7) school days. The times above may change for the following reasons:
1. Scheduled class meetings and/or club meetings.
2. Scheduled assemblies.
3. Scheduled home room meetings.
4. Scheduled exams
B. Teachers shall have a duty free lunch period of at least 30 minutes.
C. The following teachers will have, in addition to their lunch period, a preparation period during which they will not be assigned to other duties as follows:
1. Elementary teachers--when the students are with specialized teacher such as music, art, library, physical education, etc., the homeroom teacher need not be present. The teacher is not free to leave the room while the Teacher Aide is in the room. The 45-minute lunch time shall be duty free. A 19-minute afternoon recess will take place 90 of the 180 student calendar days each year. During the 90 days that recess is taking place, each elementary teacher’s preparation time will be 385 minutes per week unless they are on assigned recess duty. Elementary teachers who supervise recess will earn $20 per hour. During the 90 days that recess is replaced with direct instruction, each elementary teacher’s preparation time will be 290 minutes per week. The 90 days of direct instruction in lieu of afternoon recess will occur during winter months. The negotiated calendar will determine the dates that recess will occur. If direct instruction in lieu of recess begins/ends during the week (not on Monday/Friday) the elementary preparation time for that week will be adjusted accordingly.

Teacher Work Load. A. If, in the opinion of the teacher, additional help is needed in the classroom due to a combination of number of students, special needs of students, type of curriculum, and additional work done by the teacher, the teacher shall confer with the building principal. If both agree that a paraprofessional is needed, they shall meet and confer with the superintendent. If all three agree, a paraprofessional may be hired for all or a portion of a day. At the high school level, the teacher shall first confer with the department chair, when appropriate.
B. It is the goal of the administration to attempt to balance the class make-up (i.e. ELL, special needs, gifted) taking into account the abilities and disabilities of the students.
C. Teachers in grades 2-4 will be provided 2.5 hours three times a year or have Title I staff grade the MTSS tests with the teacher entering the results and provided 1.5 hours three times a year. The option will be determined by the building administrator. Teachers in grade K-1 will be provided 1.5 hours three times a year.
Teacher Work Load. 1. The School District Trustees will make an effort to adhere to Standards for Accreditation of Montana Schools.
2. The length of the school year for this contract will be 187 days.
3. Where maximum numbers within a particular building, subject area, grade level, or class period must exceed this standard, an effort will be made to distribute excess students among the teachers assigned to this level, area or class. The composition of a class will be taken into consideration by the building administrator in making such assignments.
4. An early release shall be granted to teachers who have completed their work to the satisfaction of their respective building administrator. This early release shall allow a teacher to conclude work at 3:30 p.m.
Teacher Work Load. A high school academic teacher’s instructional work load shall be a maximum of five (5) instructional periods per day in the high school. Every reasonable effort will be made to balance high school teacher preparations consistent with the nature of the subject area, the size of the classes, the special offerings of the department, and the special competencies of the teachers. Assignments to co-curricular, extra pay and/or supervisory service shall be subject to the requirements set forth in Article 6 pertaining to preparation and professional time. If continuous teaching time exceeds 180 minutes for K-5 teachers, teachers can, upon request, have a fifteen (15) minute break during that 180 minute period. For 6-12 instruction, every reasonable effort will be made to keep maximum continuous teaching time to four (4) 40-minute periods (or two 80-minute blocks).
A. A teacher who is hired into a “leave replacement” position for period intended to be more than five (5) months will be hired under the Collective Bargaining Agreement and receive all rights and protections thereunder.
B. Regular Substitute teachers who serve in the same assignment for twenty (20) consecutive school days will be paid a daily rate retroactive to the first such day of such assignment using the step and column of the Teachers Salary Schedule (minimum BA1 or MA1).
a) Upon the first day of the month following the 20th day of such assignment, such teacher will be paid an amount equal to 50% of the net savings on individual health premiums that would be expended on their behalf starting the next month, taking into account any retirement or social security that must be paid, should such be necessary. Regular substitutes are not eligible for health insurance and all personal days. However, a regular substitute will accrue 1 paid sick day per month up to 5 days.
b) A regular substitute will be paid the hourly rate applicable for that year for extra responsibilities beyond the regular workday (i.e. Back-to-School Night, Parent/Teacher conferences).
Teacher Work Load. The pupil-teacher ratio shall not exceed an average of thirty students to one full-time equivalent certificated employee. For the purposes of this Section, a full-time equivalent certificated employee shall be computed on the basis of time spent in the classroom. At the elementary level, if any self-contained classroom exceeds thirty students per class, or thirty- five students per class in traditional large group situations; or at the secondary level, if any self- contained classroom exceeds thirty students per class or forty students per class in traditional large group situation, then the District, after consultation with the affected teacher, may implement a variety of solutions to alleviate the problem including, but not limited to, one or more of the following:
1. Hire additional staff,
2. Create combination rooms,
3. Assign teacher aides
Teacher Work Load. The teacher workload in a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 block schedule will be as follows:
Teacher Work Load. The normal teaching load for secondary classroom teachers in the seven (7) period day shall be five (5) instructional periods, one (1) study hall/supervisory period, and one (1) preparation period, and other assigned duties such as bus duty, homeroom, and the like.

Teacher Work Load. A. Efforts will be made to continue to provide a balanced and equitable instructional load for teachers at all levels of instruction. Instructional loads will be evaluated annually to ensure balance and equity. Ideally, a teacher shall not be assigned to excessive teaching load; however, under unusual circumstances, it may be necessary to assign a teacher to more than the normal teaching load.
