Weekend Worker. A weekend schedule may be developed in order to meet the Home’s need for weekend staff, and individual employees’ preference for a weekend work schedule. A weekend schedule is defined as a schedule in which a full-time weekend worker works a weekly average of thirty (30) hours and is paid for 37.5 hours at their regular straight time hourly rate. The schedule must include two 11.25-hour tours, which fall within a weekend period as determined by the Home and the Union. An employee working a weekend schedule will work every weekend except as provided for in the provisions below. The Employer and the Union may agree to implement weekend worker position(s) if sixty-six and two thirds’ percent (66⅔%) of the full-time and part-time employees who work in the facility/unit are in agreement. The introduction of that schedule and the manner in which the position(s) are filled, shall be determined by the local parties. This schedule may be discontinued by either party with notice as determined by the local parties. The opportunity for an individual employee to discontinue this schedule shall be resolved by the local parties. Notwithstanding the voting mechanism above, a three (3) month trial period (or longer period, where agreed by the Home and the Union) for a weekend worker arrangement may be implemented without a vote in circumstances where the following additional conditions apply: ▪ An RN (or RNs) volunteers or applies for a weekend worker position and the Home and the Union agrees to accept the request. ▪ The work schedule will be modified to accommodate such a request provided there is no reduction in the regularly scheduled hours of the other RNs in the bargaining unit. ▪ Prior to the conclusion of the trial period, representatives of the Home and of the Union will evaluate and discuss the outcomes. Each Home must have the majority agreement of the full-time and part-time employees who vote on the issue to agree on a trial period of up to six months. Once the trial period is complete, each Home must have a minimum of 66⅔% agreement of the full-time and part-time employees who vote on the issue to continue with the new schedule on a permanent basis.
(a) Weekend and shift premiums shall not be paid.

An employee working a weekend schedule will work every weekend except as provided for in the provisions below. The Employer and the Union may agree to implement weekend schedule if eighty percent (80%) of the full-time and part-time employees who work in the facility/unit are in agreement. The introduction of that schedule and the manner in which the position(s) are filled, shall be determined by the local parties. This schedule may be discontinued by either party with notice as determined by the local parties. The opportunity for an individual employee to discontinue this schedule shall be resolved by the local parties:
(a) Weekend and shift premiums shall not be paid;
Weekend Worker. J.1 The Parties agree to a weekend worker schedule. The weekend worker will be scheduled in accordance with Article 13.04 of the Central Collective Agreement with the following conditions applying.
i) The Hospital and the Union will discuss vacancies and scheduling objective prior to the implementation of any weekend worker position.
ii) Schedules for the period will consist of two (2) 11.25 hour tours weekly which fall within the weekend definition in Article G.2 and one (1) 7.5 tour each week.
iii) These positions will not result in the layoff of any full-time or regular part-time registered nurses.
iv) If the agreement is not continued by the parties, the incumbents who were permanent employees prior to the agreement will be returned to their former position occupied prior to the posting.
v) Either the Hospital or the Union may discontinue this agreement with ninety (90) days notice. Upon receipt of such notice a meeting shall be held between the parties within fifteen (15) days to discuss the discontinuation. It is understood and agreed that such discontinuation shall not be unreasonable or arbitrary.
Weekend Worker. Definition
Weekend Worker. 27.1 Employees can be scheduled to work two 12-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday. These employees shall have first option on weekend overtime work.
27.2 Premium pay as per the Collective Agreement shall apply.
27.3 Night shift premium shall apply to the 11:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m. shift. Afternoon shift premium shall apply to the 11:00 a.m. shift to 11:00 p.m. shift.
27.4 The Union may appoint:
(a) one alternate Health and Safety Representative for each weekend shift.
(b) one offshift Committeeperson for each regular weekend shift; (this does not apply to overtime shifts worked on the weekend).
27.5 In-week overtime shall be handled as follows:
(a) partial shifts will be staffed with in-week workers.
(b) full shifts can be staffed with weekend workers as follows:
(i) Volunteers within the department and classification will be considered first, providing they have been off work a minimum of 12 hours.
(ii) If there are insufficient, available volunteers, the most junior employees within the department and classification can be scheduled to work providing:
A. there is a minimum of 12 hours’ notice.
B. no more than one in-week shift can be required; any additional time worked shall be voluntary.
(iii) Any work in excess of two in-week shifts shall be paid at the time and one-half premium, providing 40 hours have been worked, including the previous Saturday and Sunday.
27.6 Regarding benefits, the five-day waiting period for A & S shall be a Saturday and a Sunday. The benefit level shall be one-half of the regular weekly benefit for each Saturday or Sunday away from work due to illness. In case of accident, out-patient surgery, or hospitalization, employees will be eligible for one-half of the regular weekly benefit. Short Work Week Benefits will apply to the 24 hours worked for 40 hours of pay. For bereavement leave, weekend workers will get Sunday off with their normal premium pay. Weekend workers will not receive paid jury duty leave or paid subpoenaed crown witness leave in-week. If an employee does not work 1,000 hours in a year solely because he works the weekend schedule, he will be treated as if he worked 1,000 hours in a year for pension credit purposes.
Weekend Worker. A full-time nurse wishing to become a weekend worker as per article 13.04 of the Central Agreement will put such requests in writing to the Clinical Program Director, with a copy to the Union. If the Hospital and the Union agree to introduce a unit weekend schedule, the parties will meet to negotiate how this schedule is to be introduced and any subsequent discontinuation. Should the hospital wish to create a full-time weekend worker position the Hospital will notify the Union in writing and meet with the Union to discuss how this affects the present schedules, part-time tours, discontinuation and in what manner the positions are to be filled. A Weekend Worker will be scheduled to work Friday, Saturday and Sunday or Saturday, Sunday and Monday each weekend. A Weekend Worker’s schedule will remain unchanged during the Christmas and New Year’s periods and the nurse will work Christmas and New Year’s on any year that these holidays fall on their regularly scheduled weekend schedule.
Weekend Worker. A Weekend Worker Position will be created in response to the needs of a Unit as determined by the Patient Services Department and/or expression of interest by nurses. A newly created Weekend Worker Position will be posted bargaining unit wide. Any full-time nurse(s) who wishes to work a Weekend Worker Schedule may express interest to the Patient Services Department. The parties (ONA & Hospital) will meet to discuss such request and circumstances for implementation. The Weekend Worker position(s) will be filled in accordance with article 10.07(a). The Weekend Worker will be treated as full time with applicable benefits as described in Article 13.04 of the Central Agreement. Weekend Workers will be scheduled for two (2) 11.25 hour and one (1) 7.5 hour shifts each week. The rotation will rotate between days and nights. The 7.5 shift will normally be scheduled on the Friday or the Monday of the schedule. It is expected however that, from time to time, the weekend worker may need to be scheduled other weekdays in order to attend necessary in-service programs. For the purposes of vacation scheduling, the Weekend Worker will not be included in the Unit vacation roster. If the Weekend Worker transfers to a regular full-time position, any vacation/holiday bank shall remain intact to be used for scheduled vacation or lieu time. If a Weekend Worker transfers to a part time position or terminates employment, all vacation/holiday credits will be paid out (Article 13.04 (b)), on a separate cheque. Weekend Worker. A full-time nurse wishing to become a weekend worker as per article 13.04 of the Central Agreement will put such request(s) in writing to the Chief Nursing Officer, with a copy to the Union. If the Hospital and the Union agree to a weekend schedule, the parties will meet to negotiate how this schedule is to be introduced and any subsequent discontinuation. Should the Hospital wish to create a full-time weekend worker position, the Hospital will notify the Union in writing. Should the Union agree to creating a weekend worker position the parties will meet to discuss how this affects the present schedules, part-time tours, discontinuation and in what manner the positions are to be filled.
Weekend Worker. The Employer will notify the Union of all weekend worker positions. The introduction of any new weekend worker position shall require written agreement between the Employer and the Union. Either the Employer or the Union may discontinue this agreement. The parties will meet to discuss the discontinuance prior to giving sixty (60) days’ notice of such discontinuation. It is understood and agreed that such discontinuance shall not be done in an unreasonable or arbitrary manner.
Weekend Worker. (i) An Employee who is a Weekend Worker (as defined in subclause 58.1) who works for more than four ordinary hours on 10 or more weekends per year of continuous service is entitled to an additional 38 hours’ annual leave (pro rata for part-time Employees) on the same terms and conditions.
(ii) The provisions of this subclause 59.2(a) have the same effect and give an Employee an entitlement to annual leave that is the same as the Employee’s entitlement under the National Employment Standards relating to shiftworkers under section 87(1)(b)(ii) of the Act.
(iii) An Employee’s entitlement to annual leave under this subclause 59.2(a) operates in parallel with the Employee’s NES entitlement, but not so as to give the Employee a double benefit.
