Compassionate/Bereavement Leave. Full Time Employees and Part Time Employees shall have an entitlement to paid Compassionate Leave and Casual Employees shall have an entitlement to unpaid Compassionate Leave, as follows:- Employees shall be entitled to two (2) days compassionate leave per occasion when a member of the Employees’ immediate family or household member contracts or develops a personal injury or illness that poses a serious threat to life or an immediate family member or household member dies. The two (2) days may be taken in a single unbroken period of two (2) days or two separate periods of one (1) day as agreed by the Employer and the Employee.
Compassionate/Bereavement Leave. (a) Full-time and part-time employees will be granted five (5) consecutive working days compassionate leave upon the death of an immediate relative which shall mean the employee's spouse, child, step child, sister, brother, parent, parent-in-law*, grandparent, grandparent-in-law*, son-in-law*, daughter-in-law* or grandchild. Such leave shall be completed by the end of the fifth working day following the funeral. The following definition of spouse will be used to determine the entitlement of employees who are in "common-law" relationships, to compassionate leave in the event of the death of any of the individuals listed above.
Compassionate/Bereavement Leave. Definitions for Compassionate/Bereavement Leave
32.1.1 Immediate family covers:
(a) a spouse (including a former spouse, a defacto, a former defacto and current or former same sex partner);
(b) a child or adult child (including an adopted child, a step child or an ex nuptial child);
(c) a parent, parent in law, xxxxxx parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling of the employee;
(d) a child or adult child (including an adopted child, a step child or an ex nuptial child) of the spouse;
(e) a parent, parent in law, xxxxxx parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling of the spouse; and
(f) a person who lives with the employee in the same household or whose care is the employee's responsibility and recognising a wide range of relationships and structures which may include one or more of the following: extended family, friendship and dependency.
32.1.2 Compassionate/ Bereavement Leave Compassionate/Xxxxxxxxxxx Leave provides leave for each occasion (a permissible occasion) when a member of the employee's immediate family, or a member of the employee's household:
Compassionate/Bereavement Leave a) Compassionate leave of five (5) days at the death of spouse, mother, father, persons in loco parentis, children, brother, sister or grandchildren, or in the case of miscarriage, shall be granted without deduction from sick leave credits.
b) Compassionate leave of three (3) days at the death of mother-in-law, father-in- law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and grandparents shall be granted without deduction from sick leave credits.
c) Additional time may be granted upon request at the discretion of the Director of Education or the Director of Education’s designate.
Compassionate/Bereavement Leave. A Member shall be granted up to three (3) consecutive calendar days absence in an academic year without loss of compensation in the case of:
a) Critical illness in the Member’s immediate family; and/or,
b) Death in the immediate family. Immediate family is defined as spouse, child or children, grandchild or grandchildren, grandfather, grandmother, mother, father, brother, sister, xxxxxx’s mother and xxxxxx’s father, and any relative with whom the Member permanently resides. A Member shall notify the Chair/Director or Xxxx of the need to take the leave. A Member who takes a Compassionate/Xxxxxxxxxxx Leave shall work with the Chair to make such arrangements as are required to ensure that the Member’s teaching obligations are fully discharged during the academic term notwithstanding the leave.
Compassionate/Bereavement Leave. 1. All full-time and part-time employees are eligible for bereavement leave.
2. Employees who experience the death of a Family member or Relative and intend to request bereavement leave must notify their supervisor as soon as possible of their need for bereavement leave pay and time off. Management may request verification of death and/or relationship to the deceased.
3. In the event of the death of a Family member, employees may receive a maximum of three (3) days of bereavement leave pay, including applicable shift differentials.
a. Family member shall include the following: spouse by marriage (not including common law marriage), registered domestic partner, parent, parent-in-law, child, grandchild, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandparent and sibling, individuals for whom the employee is the legal guardian, or other relative as defined below living in the employee’s home. Step relationships are equal to blood relations and “great-grand” the same as “grand.”
4. In the event of the death of a Relative, Employees may receive a maximum of one (1) day of bereavement leave, including applicable shift differentials.
a. Relative shall include the following: aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, cousin, grandparent-in-law and sibling-in-law. Step relationships are equal to blood relations and “great-grand” the same as “grand.”
5. Bereavement leave days do not need to be taken consecutively but need to be taken within two (2) weeks (14 consecutive calendar days) of either the service (e.g. funeral, internment, cremation, memorial, etc.) or death. Compensation will be provided to replace regularly scheduled workdays missed and are not considered hours worked for the purpose of calculating overtime. Because of the nature of the Residency Program, the Residency Director shall not unreasonably deny an extension request to the two week time frame as an accommodation due including, but not limited to, religious, cultural or geographical reason(s).
6. The Hospital recognizes there may be a need for additional time off when a death occurs in the family and time is needed for the surviving family members to mourn the loss or when employees must travel extensively in order to make arrangements and/or attend funeral/memorial services. Additional time off – either Paid Time Off (PTO) or unpaid time off, where applicable, may be granted to the employee at the discretion of management.

Compassionate/Bereavement Leave. Compassionate/Bereavement Leave will be in accordance with Clause 31 – Compassionate/Bereavement Leave of the body of this Agreement except in this clause, a day will reflect a shift.

16.4.1 An Employee shall be granted up to three (3) consecutive Working Days absence in an Academic Year without loss of compensation in the case of critical illness or death in the Employee’s immediate family.
16.4.2 Immediate family is defined as spouse (including common-law and/or same sex spouse), child or children, (including children of common-law and/or same sex spouse), grandchild or grandchildren, grandfather, grandmother, mother, father, brother, sister, spouse’s mother and spouse’s father, and any relative with whom the Employee permanently resides.
16.4.3 An Employee shall notify the Director in writing of the need to take the leave.
16.4.4 An Employee who takes a Compassionate/Bereavement Leave shall work with the Director to make such arrangements as are required to ensure that his/her teaching obligations are fully discharged over the duration of his/her appointment.
16.4.5 Employees who have been employed for more than thirty (30) days and who require more than 3 days of Compassionate/Bereavement Leave are entitled to up to eight (8) weeks’ unpaid leave of absence to provide care or support to an seriously ill family member in accordance with the Compassionate Care Leave provisions in s.59.2(l) — 60(5)of The Employment Standards Code, C.C.S.M., c E110, as amended from time to time. The Employee may be eligible for Employment Insurance benefits. At the end of the 8 weeks, the Employee will be returned to his/her position unless the appointment has expired.
Compassionate/Bereavement Leave. 42.6.1 An employee is entitled to up to two days paid leave on each occasion a member of the employee’s immediate family or household dies.
42.6.2 Proof of death must be provided to the satisfaction of the Employer.
