Leave of Absence (Unpaid). (a) As soon as possible, but within the first three (3) consecutive days of absence, an employee must notify his/her supervisor of his/her absence and apply for leave in accordance with one of the leave provisions set forth in this Article. Except in unusual circumstances, as determined by the Superintendent, failure of the employee to notify and apply for leave in a timely manner, will be considered a resignation of employment from the District. (b) After accrued sick leave is exhausted, an employee may request unpaid personal leave of absence due to his/her personal illness. Personal leave due to illness is leave without pay and may be granted for a period of up to the end of the employee’s work year.

Leave of Absence (Unpaid). A. The Employer may, upon the receipt of approved medical certification, grant an employee who is unable to work because of sickness, injury or illness and who has exhausted all available paid leave, an unpaid leave of absence for a period not to exceed one (1) year. B. An employee who requests an unpaid leave of absence as defined in Section 3 above shall submit to the Employer a signed physician’s statement to include the following information; 1. Nature of the sickness, injury or illness. 2. Date leave shall begin and approximate date of termination of unpaid leave. 3. Statement that employee is unable to perform his regular duties. C. The Employer shall require an employee to take a physical examination conducted by a licensed physician or psychologist selected by the Employer to determine the employee’s physical or mental capacity to perform the duties of the employee’s position any time during such unpaid leave of absence, as defined in Section 3 above. The Employer shall pay the cost of the examination. In the event the Employer’s doctor and the employee’s doctor are in disagreement, a third doctor selected mutually by the parties will perform the deciding examination, the cost of which will be divided between the Employer and the employee. The decision of the third doctor shall be final and binding. D. Upon completion of such leave of absence, an employee may be reinstated to employment at the rank that he had attained at the time leave was granted.
Leave of Absence (Unpaid). In addition to the Family Medical Leave Act, a leave of absence for up to one (1) year may be granted by the Board of Education at its discretion. Any applicant desiring such leave shall present, in writing, his request stating clearly the reason and purpose of the leave to the Superintendent. Leave of Absence (Unpaid). The Company may, in its sole discretion, grant an unpaid leave of absence in accordance with this Article to a regular employee who has completed their probationary period. The Leave of absence shall not exceed ninety (90) days in duration and must be applied for in writing at least one month prior to the commencement of the requested leave. The request for leave must specify the reason for the leave and the length of leave requested. It is understood that only a leave of absence for legitimate personal reasons will be considered by the Company which, for clarity, does not include a leave to perform work for remuneration and/or personal gain of any kind. Where a leave of absence is granted by The Company, the following shall apply: 1) For leaves of absence of 30 days or less: The employee shall continue to participate in the pension and employee benefit plans and the employee shall continue to accrue seniority while on leave. 2) For leaves of absence of greater than 30 days, the following shall apply: After 30 days on leave, if the employee wants to participate in the employee benefit plan they shall pay the premiums prior to the leave. They shall continue to accrue seniority for the remainder of the leave. The Company may, in its sole discretion, decide to grant a leave of absence in excess of ninety (90) days on a strictly exceptional basis depending on the gravity and/or severity of the specific personal circumstances underlying the request for the leave. Should a leave of absence in excess of 90 days be granted by the Company, the provisions of paragraph (2) above will apply.

If the following criteria are met, the Board may approve the unpaid leave: 1. A unit member shall have completed five (5) continuous years of employment with the board and has not been granted a sabbatical leave. 2. If an appropriate substitute can be secured. B. A leave under these provisions will be granted to members of the bargaining unit only once during their employment with the Board. C. If the unit member on leave wishes to continue any or all of his/her insurance coverage(s), the unit member will remit the total cost of the monthly premium(s) for such coverage(s) to the Treasurer of the Board fifteen (15) days prior to the due date.

Teachers who have been employed in the Olentangy Schools for three (3) years may be granted a leave of absence for up to one (1) year for the purpose of participating in under-graduate and graduate programs related to his/her professional responsibilities. B. Teachers who have been employed in the Olentangy Schools for five (5) years may be granted a leave of absence for up to one (1) year for the purpose of participating in exchange teaching programs, foreign or military teaching program, the Peace Corps, or Job Corps, as a full-time participant in such program and for cultural travel. C. Unpaid leaves of absence for non-medical reasons.
