Professional Responsibilities. 6.2.1 The Board and the Association agree that the primary professional responsibility of faculty members is teaching, professional library work, or professional counseling, depending on the position. They agree that scholarship and professional development and service are also faculty responsibilities. It is the responsibility of the Board and the Association to xxxxxx an atmosphere of intellectual inquiry and growth. It is the responsibility of the Board to provide support to fulfill these responsibilities.
6.2.1.1 Full-time instructional faculty members shall normally be assigned to a twenty-four (24) credit hour teaching load (or its equivalent) during the regular academic year (fall and winter semesters). For full-time faculty, twelve (12) hours is the normal credit hour load for each regular semester. Contingent faculty shall have a credit hour teaching load of fewer than twelve (12) credits in any semester. If a contingent faculty member’s teaching load is twelve (12) credits or more, their appointment will be converted to term. It is recognized that it may not be possible to establish the same credit hour production for each faculty member. Department Heads, after meeting with the department are responsible for developing mutually agreeable written guidelines to structure assignments that will take into account large sections in single courses, number of preparations, nature of preparations, laboratory supervision and planning, supervision of special learning activities, supervision of field activities, clinical experience, number of advisees, or administrative duties, and other assigned responsibilities. Departments may also specify enrollment caps for specific courses. These guidelines, referred to as Load Documents, will be reviewed annually and forwarded to the AAUP Office.
6.2.1.1.1 Off-campus teaching assignments, defined as courses that are taught face-to-face at a physical location other than the NMU campus in Marquette MI, during the academic year may be made upon mutual consent of the faculty member and department head and shall be based on the programmatic needs as determined by the xxxx and the department head. These courses may be offered to qualified members of the bargaining unit or to qualified adjuncts as off campus courses. Professional Responsibilities. 5.2.1 Members of the Bargaining Unit, guided by a deep conviction of the worth and dignity of the advancement of knowledge, shall recognize that academic responsibility implies faithful performance of professional duties and obligations. Their primary responsibility to their subject is to seek and state the truth as they see it. To this end Members shall devote their energies to developing and improving their scholarly competence. They have an obligation to exercise critical self-discipline and judgment in using, extending, and transmitting knowledge. They shall practice intellectual honesty. Although Members may follow subsidiary interests, these interests must never seriously hamper or compromise their freedom of inquiry.
5.2.2 As teachers, Bargaining Unit Faculty shall encourage the free pursuit of learning in their students. They shall hold before them the best scholarly and ethical standards of their discipline. Bargaining Unit Faculty shall demonstrate respect for students as individuals and adhere to their proper roles as intellectual guides and counselors. Members of the Bargaining Unit shall make every reasonable effort to xxxxxx honest academic conduct and ensure that their evaluations of students reflect each student’s true merit. They shall avoid any exploitation, harassment, or discriminatory treatment of students. They shall acknowledge significant academic or scholarly assistance from students.
5.2.3 As colleagues, Bargaining Unit Faculty have obligations that derive from common membership in the community of scholars. Members of the Bargaining Unit shall not discriminate against or harass colleagues. They shall respect and defend their associates’ free inquiry. In the exchange of criticism and ideas Members shall show due respect for others, even when disagreeing with or criticizing others’ opinions. Bargaining Unit Faculty shall acknowledge academic debts and strive to be objective in their professional judgment of colleagues.
5.2.4 In making public statements–including the exercise of the right to responsible dissent on matters of institutional policy or educational philosophy–Members of the Bargaining Unit have an obligation to be accurate, to act in a professional manner, to show due respect for others (even when disagreeing with or criticizing others’ opinions), and to make every effort to indicate that they are not speaking for the University.

The Employer recognizes that an employee must work in a manner consistent with the standards of conduct, codes of ethics and by-laws established by the appropriate licensing body. Normal duties include meetings called by principals, department chairpersons/team leaders and School District administrators, which may necessitate a longer teacher's day or week. Moreover, an important function of a teacher is to work with student(s) and, to accomplish this, a longer teacher's day or week may be necessary.
Professional Responsibilities. 13.2.1 The primary professional responsibilities of UNAC bargaining unit members are teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the University and the public.
13.2.2 UNAC bargaining unit members have additional professional responsibilities including, but not limited to: maintaining reasonable office hours; working collaboratively and productively with colleagues; participating in conferences and seminars; maintaining currency in disciplinary subject matter, methodology, and pedagogy; and preparing for and participating in traditional academic functions.
13.2.3 It is understood between the parties that UNAC bargaining unit members may not participate in all professional activities identified in this article during each academic term or year.
Professional Responsibilities. Faculty Members
11.01 A faculty member’s professional obligations and responsibilities to the University shall encompass: (a) teaching; (b) research, scholarly or creative activity; (c) service to the University. While the pattern of these duties may vary between streams and may vary from individual to individual, they constitute the faculty member’s princi- pal obligation during the employment year, and include, without being restricted to, responsibilities as follows:
(a) A faculty member shall carry out their responsibility for teaching with all due attention to the establish- ment of fair and ethical dealings with students, taking care to make themselves accessible to students for academic consultation, to inform students adequately regarding course formats, assignments, and methods of evaluation, to maintain teaching schedules in all but exceptional circumstances, to inform students adequately of any necessary cancellation and resched- uling of instruction, and to adhere to the schedules for submission of grades and evaluations by their department and Faculty.
(b) A faculty member shall be entitled to and expected to devote a reasonable proportion of their time to research, scholarly or creative work consistent with their stream. They shall endeavour to make the results of such work accessible to the scholarly and general public through publications, lectures, and other ap- propriate means. Faculty members shall, in published works, indicate any reliance on the work and assist- ance of academic colleagues and/or students.
(c) Service to the University is performed by faculty members through participation in the decision-mak- ing councils of the University, and through sharing in the necessary administrative work of their depart- ments, Faculties, the University, or the Association. In performance of these collegial and administrative activities, faculty members shall objectively assess the performance of their colleagues, shall avoid discrimin- ation, shall not infringe their colleagues’ academic freedom, and shall observe appropriate principles of confidentiality. In performance of their professional responsibilities faculty members shall deal fairly and ethically with their colleagues, students, and other members of the University community. In the performance of their professional responsibilities, including any supervisory responsibilities, faculty members shall observe and comply with relevant provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act ...
Professional Responsibilities. The Association recognizes that strikes, as defined by Section 1 of the Michigan Public Act #336 of 1947 as amended, by teachers are contrary to law and public policy. The Association agrees it will not direct, authorize, instigate, encourage, condone, support or participate in any strike by any teacher or group of teachers and that in the event any such strike should occur, it will exert every effort reasonable within its power to terminate the same forthwith.
