At the beginning of each school year employees must notify the transportation supervisor in writing as to the list(s) they wish to be on and include their up-to-date contact numbers. If an employee elects to opt-out of taking extra trips they must do so in writing to the transportation supervisor. It shall be the responsibility of the employee to notify the transportation Supervisor of changes in availability and contact information. Trips will be assigned using the following procedure: On Monday (or the first day of the work week), a list of the known extra trips for the month will be placed in the drivers’ mailboxes. The trips for the first two weeks on that list will be assigned on the Friday of that week by 9am (Except in the case of school breaks which would require a three-week assignment). Results of those trip assignments will be placed on a bulletin board in the transportation building for all drivers to see. Once the list has been completed it will start at the top of the list and continue on through again. Should a trip be turned down by all of the regular drivers who sign-up, then it will be offered to any substitute driver. If a driver cannot get approval from his/her immediate supervisor in the other regularly assigned job, the driver may trade his/her trip to another driver if both agree. 5.3.2.3 Throughout the school year, drivers will be re-ranked weekly on the basis of the number of hours credited to each driver’s extra trip time account. Drivers credited with the most extra duty hours are placed at the bottom of the eligibility list, and drivers with the least such hours are placed at the top of the list.
5.3.2.4 Drivers log hours in their extra trip account on the basis of the number of hours of actual extra trip time worked or of the number of hours equal to a trip “passed.” (A trip is “passed” whenever a driver does not accept the offer of an extra trip and is not eligible for a “hold.” Drivers are eligible for a “hold” whenever they are disabled by a verifiable illness, are eligible for military leave pursuant to Article VII, Section 6 of this Agreement, or are unavailable for a trip which is offered less than twenty-four hours before the trip’s scheduled departure time.)
5.4.1 Whenever administratively practicable, special trips will be assigned to evenly distribute the number of trips (not hours) among all the drivers in the department.
5.4.2 Special trips will be assigned by the Transportation Director, or designee, based on the following;
5.4.2.1 Safety factors requiring special experience or specialized knowledge and skills.
5.4.2.2 Driver’s ability to handle the necessary equipment.

They will be given a chance to gain experience on extra trips after they have been driving on a regular run for at least 45 days.
