Illness and Disability Leave. Upon employment, a teacher shall receive a bank of twenty-four (24) days of leave, to be used as necessary during the first two (2) years of employment in the Alcona Community Schools. Commencing with the third year, additional leave days will be granted at the rate of twelve (12) days per year at the beginning of each school year. The unused portion of such leave is cumulative from year to year, but shall not accumulate to exceed one hundred eighty (180) days. The leave days so granted may be used by a teacher for the following reasons and subject to the following conditions:

Illness and Disability Leave. Any member of the bargaining unit who is unable to perform the duties of his/her position because of personal illness or other disability, upon application to the Board, shall be granted a leave of absence without pay or benefits for a specified period not to exceed one (1) year. Such leave may be renewed for another specified period not to exceed one (1) year.

Union employees with six months of service or more who do not qualify for Family Medical Leave shall receive an unpaid Leave of up to 12 sequential weeks within a rolling calendar year for a period of personal serious illness or injury. After this Leave is exhausted, the individual's hours and position will not be held. The Employer shall continue to make health insurance contributions on behalf of such employee, up to a maximum of three (3) months total contribution. The Center shall have the right to hire a temporary replacement employee during the leave of absence. Such an employee may be terminated at any time, with our without cause, during the leave of absence, or six (6) months from the commencement of employment, whichever occurs first. The Employer shall not be obligated to make insurance contributions on behalf of such employee.

Illness and Disability Leave. A leave of absence without pay will be granted to employees for illness or disability, including pregnancy, for employees who have been employed for six (6) months or more, for a maximum period of twenty-fo ur (24) weeks which includes any accrued sick leave. Employees shall be expected to use accrued vacation during any leave, after sick leave has been exhausted. However, an employee may retain up to forty (40) hours of vacation if an employee so chooses. Seniority and benefits shall not accrue during the period of the leave of absence. At the start of such disability leave, and as a condition of its continuance, the employee when requested by the Employer, shall furnish the Employer with a physician's certificate certifying as to the employee's inability to return to work because of such illness or disability. When the employee is able to return to work, he/she shall obtain a physician's certificate certifying (a) that the employee is able to return to work; and (b) that the employee has been disabled or ill for the entire disability leave of absence. At the Employer's option, the disability leave of absence may be extended. Length of service increments shall continue to accrue during the period of the leave of absence.
Illness and Disability Leave. A teacher having achieved tenure status shall be granted, upon his/her written application, an unpaid leave of absence to recover from an illness or disability for a period up to the balance of that school year. Thereafter, said leave may be extended at the Board’s discretion. A teacher desiring an extension shall so apply at least thirty (30) days prior to the beginning of the next school year or prior to termination of said leave. Medical verification shall be supplied by the teacher upon application for said leave. Any further required verification shall be paid for by the Board of Education. Upon return from said leave, the teacher shall be restored to his/her same position on the salary schedule as when he/she left and be entitled to other benefits accrued prior to said leave.
