Sabbatical Leaves of Absence. This section is suspended and subject to annual review. Sabbatical leaves for professional improvement may be granted by the Board, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, for the purpose of participating in an accredited college or university study program or other activities (8.3.9) deemed by the Superintendent, or his designee, to be educational and appropriate for professional improvement.
8.3.1. Sabbatical leave may be granted for either one (1) or two (2) semesters.
8.3.2. Written requests for sabbatical leave shall be made in such form as the Superintendent may prescribe, and shall be submitted not later than March 1 or October 1, preceding the semester when it is desired that the leave become effective. The Covered Employee shall also meet with the Executive Director of Human Resources to review the conditions of the contract entered into by the Covered Employee and District prior to the leave request being submitted to the Board.
8.3.3. A Covered Employee must have completed six (6) consecutive full school years as a regularly appointed Covered Employee in the District before the Covered Employee is eligible to request sabbatical leave.
8.3.4. If a program of study, the applicant shall furnish evidence that their program of study has been accepted by an accredited graduate school before consideration shall be given to the request for sabbatical leave.
8.3.5. Upon return from sabbatical leave, the Covered Employee shall submit to the Superintendent a report containing transcripts of all college and university study undertaken while on leave, or other items of information pertinent to an evaluation of the program while on sabbatical leave.
8.3.6. The Covered Employee shall agree to return to employment with the District for one (1) full year in the event of a one half (½) year sabbatical leave of absence, or two (2) full years in the event of a one (1) year sabbatical leave of absence. The Covered Employee shall also obtain approval from the Superintendent of any proposed changes in the plan for professional improvement while on sabbatical leave.
8.3.7. Covered Employees on sabbatical leave will be paid at fifty percent (50%) of their annual salary rate, with one half (½) insurance and retirement benefits. Upon return, the Covered Employee shall be placed on the appropriate step on the salary schedule as though such Covered Employee had not been on sabbatical leave.

Sabbatical Leaves of Absence. A. Sabbatical leaves of absence will be granted in compliance with the applicable sections of the School Code, as amended.
B. Request for such leaves will be submitted to the Bargaining Unit Member’s supervisor prior to March 1 of the current school year with proper documentation to substantiate this absence from duty. Such documentation shall include, but not limit itself to, evidence of acceptance at educational institution(s) with specific course outlines, physician(s) statement(s) attesting to the need for rest and/or- health restoration. For sabbatical leaves for professional development, the Bargaining Unit Member must maintain a minimum course load, or the equivalent, of at least nine (9) credit hours per semester. At the discretion of the Superintendent, this may include, by way of example, research or writing of a doctoral dissertation.
C. While on sabbatical leave for professional development, progress reports will be submitted. One (1) report shall be submitted at mid-term to the Superintendent. Further, a final report in approved form will be submitted within thirty (30) days after the end of the leave. In cases of rest and health restoration, appropriate physicians' statements will be submitted as required.
D. While on sabbatical leave of absence, the Bargaining Unit Member will not be engaged in any full-time remunerative employment without the permission of the District Superintendent.
Sabbatical Leaves of Absence. 11.12.1 The Board may grant employees a sabbatical leave of absence not to exceed one year for the purpose of permitting study or travel by the employee, which will benefit the schools and the students of the District. No such leave, however, shall be granted to any employee who has not rendered full-time service to the District for at least seven consecutive years preceding the granting of the leave, and not more than one such leave shall be granted in each seven year period.
11.12.2 Each employee granted such leave shall receive compensation at the rate of one- half the salary the employee would have received during the period of the leave if he/she had continued in regular service during such period. Any compensation so granted may be paid in two equal installments during the first two years of service rendered as an employee of the District following the return of the employee from the leave of absence. Applicants who desire to receive salary allowance while on sabbatical leave must furnish a suitable bond indemnifying the District for any salary paid the employee during the period of the sabbatical leave in the event the employee fails to return to render service twice the length of the sabbatical leave to the District following the termination of the sabbatical leave; or in the event the employee fails to satisfactorily carry out the program of study or the itinerary of an approved trip. The bond shall be exonerated in the event that failure of the employee to return and render the required service is caused by the death or the physical or mental disability of the employee. Physical disability shall be certified by a physician acceptable to the District and mental disability by a psychiatrist acceptable to the District. Costs of such examinations shall be at the employee's expense. Employees on sabbatical leave shall continue to receive District fringe benefits paid for by the District.
11.12.3 Employees applying for sabbatical leave shall do so by sending a letter of application to the Superintendent. Applications shall be received not later than February 1 of the year prior to the effective date of the leave. Sabbatical Leaves of Absence. A. A Sabbatical Leave may be granted at the discretion of the Board for advanced study that will enhance the general effectiveness of the Lebanon Township School District. The granting or not granting of a sabbatical request remains the authority of the Board of Education and denial of sabbatical is not arbitrative under this contract.
B. Sabbatical leaves are designed to promote professional improvement and improve professional competence so as to benefit the general effectiveness of the school system.
C. A teacher who will have completed seven (7) or more years of continuous full-time service as of June 30th of the year of application in the Lebanon Township School District, may, upon approval of the Board of Education, be given an absence by the Board of Education for one (1) full year for advanced study.
1. An individual requesting sabbatical leave shall be enrolled during such leave in an accredited graduate program or have been accepted for advanced study meeting the requirements of paragraph B. Special consideration will be given to an individual expecting to complete his advanced degree program during the term of the requested leave, but in all cases, the needs of the district shall be paramount. Each applicant must take a minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours during the year.
2. The advanced study is designed to promote professional competence in the individual’s assigned field; or the leave is designed to extend an individual’s professional competence into a field where the competence in such field is determined by the Board to be beneficial to the needs of the district.
3. Advanced study shall mean an approved program or independent research for credit in an accredited institution of learning.
D. Applications for such leave shall be made before January 1st prior to the school year for which such absence is requested. The application shall be made in writing to the Superintendent in the form of a letter outlining the rationale for the sabbatical request. The letter shall also indicate the advanced study program to be followed during the period of leave.
E. As a condition to such leave, the teacher shall enter into a contract to continue in the service of the Lebanon Township School District for a period of at least two (2) years after the expiration of the leave of absence. Upon recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools and with the endorsement of both the building principal and of the applicant and the TEPS Committee, one year sabbatical leaves of absence shall be granted for study or travel to members of the professional staff covered by this Agreement by the Committee subject to the following conditions:
1. The number of leaves in any one year shall be 1% of the total professional staff or the major fraction thereof.
2. Such leaves must be filed in writing on or before April 1 if they are to become effective in September of that year.
3. Action by the Committee shall be taken on such leaves by April 15 in the calendar year in which they are to become effective.
4. Such leaves shall be granted only to members of the professional staff who have served in the Weymouth School System for six (6) years or longer. A second or third such leave shall not be authorized unless and until one shall have

2. Such leaves must be filed in writing on or before April 1 if they are to become effective in September of that year.
3. Action by the Committee shall be taken on such leaves by April 15 in the calendar year in which they are to become effective.
4. Such leaves shall be granted only to BCBAs who have served in the Weymouth School System for six (6) years or longer. A second or third such leave shall not be authorized unless and until one shall have re-established eligibility by serving another period of six (6) years.
5. BCBAs on sabbatical leave shall receive half pay.
6. A BCBA on sabbatical leave shall return to regular service in the Weymouth School System at the expiration of the leave for a period equal to twice the length of the leave.
7. A BCBA's Status and regular salary increments shall not be impaired by a sabbatical leave.
Sabbatical Leaves of Absence. A. Appropriate Purpose for Sabbatical Leaves of Absence
1. Sabbatical leaves of absence for the following purposes will be considered appropriate:
a. Formal graduate study or approved professional improvement;
b. Independent research undertaken in consultation with the Superintendent;
c. Writing a doctoral dissertation; and
d. Schedule of travel planned in consultation with the Superintendent.
Sabbatical Leaves of Absence. 9.12.1 All sabbatical leaves of absence shall be governed by provisions similar to those outlined in Personnel Bulletin #4 (12-18-86).
9.12.2 During the sabbatical leave period, retirement contributions based upon the salary received and other benefits shall continue.
9.12.3 The provision for four sabbatical leaves during each year of the agreement will not be implemented during the term of this agreement.
