Duties of School Resource Officers. The SRO’s duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:
A. To be an extension of the principal’s office for assignments consistent with this Agreement.
B. To be a visible, active law enforcement figure on campus dealing with law enforcement matters and school code violations originating on the assigned campus. As to school code violations, the SRO will take the student to the principal’s office for discipline to be meted out by school officials.
C. To act as the designee of the campus administrator in maintaining the physical plant of the assigned campus to provide a safe environment as to law enforcement matters and school code violations. This includes building(s), grounds, parking lot(s), lockers and other public school property. As to school code violations, the SRO will take the student to the principal’s office for discipline to be meted out by school officials.
D. To provide a classroom resource for law education using approved materials.
E. To be a resource for students which will enable them to be associated with a law enforcement figure and role model in the students’ environment.
F. To be a resource for teachers, parents and students for conferences on an individual basis dealing with individual problems or questions, particularly in the area of substance control.
G. To make appearances before site councils, parent groups, and other groups associated with the campus and as a speaker on a variety of requested topics, particularly drug and alcohol abuse.
H. To document activities of all SROs on and off campus and as a compiler of a monthly report to be provided to the Police Department and to the principal of the assigned school.
I. The SRO will be involved in school discipline, When it pertains to preventing a disruption that would, if ignored, place students, faculty and staff at risk of harm, the SRO will resolve the problem to preserve the school climate. As to school code violations, the SRO will take the student to the principal’s office for discipline to be meted out by school officials.
Duties of School Resource Officers. Instructional responsibility of the SROs at the School is as follows:
a. The SROs shall act as an educator, counselor and police officer.
b. The SROs shall act as an instructor for specialized, short-term programs at the School, when invited to do so by the principal or member of the faculty.
c. The SROs shall make available to the School faculty and students a variety of law related presentations.
d. The SROs shall coordinate all of his/her activities with the School principal and staff members concerned and will seek permission, advice and guidance prior to enacting any program within the School.
e. The SROs shall develop expertise in presenting various subjects to the School students. Such subjects shall include basic understanding of the laws, the role of the police officer and the police mission.
f. The SROs shall encourage individual and small group discussions with School students, based upon material presented in class to further establish rapport with the students.
g. The SROs shall make himself/herself available for conference with School students, parents and faculty members in order to assist them with problems of law enforcement or crime prevention.
h. The SROs shall become familiar with all School community agencies which offer assistance to youths and their families such as mental health clinics, drug treatment centers, etc. The SROs shall make referrals to such agencies when necessary, thereby acting as a resource person to the students, faculty and staff at the School.
i. The SROs shall assist the School principal in developing plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations which may occur on the School campus or during School sponsored events.
j. The SROs shall take law enforcement action as required by law. As soon as practicable, the SROs shall make the principal of the School aware of such action. At the principal’s request and upon final approval by the County Sheriff, the SROs shall take appropriate law enforcement action against intruders and unwanted guests who may appear at the School and related School functions, to the extent that the SROs may do so under the authority of the law. Whenever practicable, the SROs shall advise the School principal before requesting additional police assistance on the School campus.
k. The SROs shall give assistance to other police officers and deputy sheriffs in matters regarding his/her School assignment, whenever necessary and authorized by the County Sheriff.

a. The SROs shall act as instructors for specialized, short-term programs at the high school, when invited to do so by the principal or member of the faculty.
b. The SROs at the high school shall teach a part of the "Life Skills Drug Education Program" as a guest speaker. The principal or member of the faculty shall make the request of the SROs. The SROs shall not be asked to teach the Life Skills Drug Education Program on a full-time basis.
c. The SROs shall make available to the high school faculty and students a variety of law related presentations.
d. Any exceptions to the above must be mutually agreed upon by the Chief of North Port Police, the Superintendent of Schools, and the individual school principal.
2. Instructional responsibility for the SROs at Heron Creek Middle School, and Woodland Middle School:
a. The SROs shall act as instructors for specialized, short-term programs at the middle school, when invited to do so by the principal or member of the faculty.
b. The SROs at the middle school shall teach a part of the “Life Skills Drug Education Program” as a guest speaker. The principal or member of the faculty shall make the request of the SROs. The SROs shall not be asked to teach the Life Skills Drug Education on a full-time basis.
Duties of School Resource Officers. 5.1 To protect lives and property for the citizens, including GISD students;
5.2 To take law enforcement action as required. The SRO shall conduct his or her law enforcement activities pursuant to all of DASO operating guides, policies, and operation directives, except as otherwise provided in this Agreement. As soon as practical, the SRO shall make the SRO supervisor and/or the GISD principal for assigned school aware of such action, and shall complete all reports as may be required for a Sheriffs Deputy and transmit said reports or copies of said reports to ▇▇▇▇.
5.3 To investigate criminal activity committed on or adjacent to school property to include giving assistance to other DASO deputies in matters regarding his or her assignment to DASO whenever necessary, including the apprehension of criminal suspects engaged in criminal activities and execution of warrants when appropriate.
5.4 To be responsible for determining the need for additional law enforcement presence or assistance on campus and will make such request when needed. In the event the SRO requests additional patrol units on campus, he or she will act as the primary unit directing and assisting the additional DASO units except as otherwise provided by DASO policies and procedures.
5.5 To provide for the protection of students and staff from negative influences and from criminal conduct, and he or she shall assist in the maintenance of peace and order on the property of GISD.
5.6 To be present at school functions such as athletic events, dances, PTA programs and other school-sponsored events when the GISD Safety and Security Coordinator and the SRO Supervisor agree his or her attendance is advantageous to maintaining order in the public schools. The SRO Supervisor will coordinate such activities with the GISD Safety and Security Coordinator to minimize the requirement to provide overtime pay.
5.7 To be armed at all times working at G I S D , unless otherwise directed by ▇▇▇▇ policies, procedures or directives.
5.8 The SRO Supervisor shall act as an advisor to the GISD Safety and Security Coordinator in safety and security matters, violence reduction strategies and legal aspects of the activity of students.
5.9 The SRO Supervisor will assist the Superintendent of Schools and the GISD Safety and Security Coordinator in developing plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations which may result from student conduct.

Duties of School Resource Officers. While on duty at their assigned school, each SRO shall perform the following duties:
A. Endeavor to maintain the peace upon school property.
B. Conduct investigations of crimes occurring upon school property and prepare all associated documents required by law and policy.
C. Make arrests and referrals of criminal law violators.
D. Speak to classes on the law, including search and seizure, criminal law, motor vehicle law and other topics when requested to do so by the principal and/or faculty.

F. Communicate with specified students at the request of the principal or faculty with the goal of achieving a positive influence on such students.
G. Make referrals to social service agencies at the request ofthe principal and/or faculty.
H. Work with school principals to establish contingency plans for all types of school
I. Serve as a liaison between the school and the surrounding community by providing advice to residents and businesses in the area with regards to problems encountered as a result of school/student activities.
J. Wear official police uniforms, which shall be provided at DEPARTMENT’s expense; however, civilian attire may be worn on such occasions as may be mutually agreed upon by the principal and the supervisor(s) of the SRO's.
K. Perform such other duties as are mutually agreed upon by the principal and the immediate supervisor(s) of the SROs, so long as the performance of such duties is legitimately and reasonably related to law enforcement and the SRO program as described in the Agreement, and so long as such duties are consistent with federal, state and municipal law and the general orders of the DEPARTMENT.
L. As time and work schedules permit, attend student, parent and faculty meetings to provide information regarding the SRO program and its goals and objectives.
M. Refrain from addressing school disciplinary issues. SRO investigations will only be conducted to determine if a crime has been committed. If at such time it is determined that a crime has not been committed, the matter will be turned over to a school ▇▇▇▇ or principal to handle administratively.

f. The SRO at the S.C.T.I. shall make available a variety of law related presentations to the faculty and students.
g. Any exceptions to the above must be mutually agreed upon by the Sheriff's Office, the Superintendent of Schools and the individual school principal.
2. Instructional responsibility for SROs at the middle schools (Venice, ▇▇▇▇▇▇, Sarasota, Brookside, ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇, Pineview & Laurel):
a. The SRO shall act as an instructor for specialized, short-term programs at the middle schools, when invited to do so by the principal or member of the faculty.
b. The SRO Officer shall make available to the middle school faculty and students a variety of law related presentations.
c. The SRO shall teach the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office (SSO) curriculum to students in the 7th grade. The S.R.O. shall work with the principal and instructional staff to coordinate and schedule the lessons at their school.
d. Any exceptions to the above must be mutually agreed upon by the Sheriff's Office, the Superintendent of Schools and the individual school principal.
3. Instructional responsibilities of the Floating elementary SROs.
a. The SROs shall present the Crime to Court Program, the D.A.R.E. Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education, 5th grade) and the Officer Friendly Program (Safety Programs, Pre- kindergarten-3rd grade) according to a schedule established by the supervisors in the Youth Service Bureau.

a. Act as an instructor for specialized, short-term programs at the campus sites when invited to do so by the school administration or members of the faculty.
b. The School Resource Officer shall make available to each campus faculty and students a variety of law related presentations.
c. If requested by the Health and Physical Education Department of the schools, SRO shall teach the law-related part of ADAP (Alcohol Drug Awareness Program), general knowledge of Georgia traffic laws and any other subjects relevant to instructional progress of the class.
