Department Chairs. The release time required to perform the administrative functions of the Department Chair positions shall be deducted from the total workload of the Department Chair with no less than fifty percent (50%) of this release taken from direct instructional duties.
Department Chairs. 16.01 The selection and review of Department Chairs shall be governed, except as otherwise provided in this Agreement, in accordance with the University's statement on "Policy for the Selection and Review of Chairs" as approved by the Board of Governors (Appendix G).
16.02 When a new Department is established by the University, the University shall appoint its first Chair who shall hold office for a period of two (2) Academic Years, subject to the provisions of the policy contained in Appendix G.
16.03 The Department Chair:
(a) shall provide leadership consistent with the principle of primus inter pares to ensure the effective operation and development of the academic Department;
(b) shall convene and chair regular meetings with the Department on matters of importance to the Department or the University;
(c) shall advise the appropriate Xxxx on matters pertaining to the academic Department or Subject Area including the teaching assignments of faculty, and the management of course enrolments within the academic Department consistent with Articles 17.01 (Assignment of Teaching) and 17.04 (Class Size);
(d) shall represent the academic Department on Senate, University committees and at various University events such as convocation where they are invited to represent their Departments and keep the Department informed of developments;
(e) shall submit budget proposals and administer approved budgets for the Department;
(f) shall coordinate the programs of the Department;
(g) shall advise students on academic matters and deal with student concerns;
(h) may request teaching assistants to assist individual faculty members in specific courses in their Departments; (Departments may include in their budget submissions provision for teaching assistants. The University, through the budget process, shall ensure an equitable allocation of funds for teaching assistants among Departments.)
(i) shall interview all Department probationary Employees yearly with respect to teaching and advising, research, scholarship, and professional activities, and service, where applicable, and Departmental and University activities such as the annual reports and review, pursuant to Article 21.
(j) shall carry out such other duties as required by the Agreement or by Senate policies.
16.04 The Department Chair shall undertake to have executed every decision on which the Department has attained a consensus or majority decision, and shall in no instance countermand such a decision.
16.05 In ins...
Department Chairs. 29.4.1 OC shall appoint a Chair for the Counselling, Library, and every instructional department from among those departmental members holding continuing appointments.
29.4.2 A Chair shall represent and act on behalf of the department in the Faculty and OC matters; ensure that the department performs the administrative functions described in clause 29.3.2; ensure that the department operates in accordance with the established guidelines of the department, and other policies and procedures that are adopted by the department and the portfolio and OC; facilitate communication among department members, and between the department and other departments, the portfolios, the designated supervisor, OC, other educational institutions, professional associations, and program advisory committees.
29.4.3 A Chair shall also make recommendations to the Xxxx or Director on the annual educational plan and workload assignments. The Chair shall endeavour to ensure that departmental recommendations on workload assignments reflect a fair and equitable distribution of workload in accordance with clause 19.1.
29.4.4 A Chair shall also ensure that departmental selection committees and other relevant departmental committees are struck and proceed in accordance with the provisions of this Agreement.
29.4.5 The performance of chair duties in non-instructional departments shall occur during the total assigned duty time of 35 hours per week as outlined in Article 20.
29.4.6 The Director of Library Services shall be responsible for communication between the Library, and other educational institutions, professional associations, and program advisory committees. The Chair shall have a collaborative role with these duties.
Department Chairs. Department Chairs as faculty report directly to their respective Xxxx on all departmental and School matters. Reassigned time for Department Chairs shall be determined as a percentage of load as indicated in Appendix C and shall be consistent with section 4.5 of this Contract, Effect of Reassigned Time Upon Teaching Load and Office Hours. Reassigned time shall be applied for the duration of a faculty member’s contract, regardless of whether the length of contract is 10, 11, or 12 months.
Department Chairs. 3.5.1 All Department Chairs shall be elected for a two (2) year term from and by the faculty in the department(s) concerned. Positions shall be declared vacant and posted for one (1) month, two (2) months prior to the end of the two year term. Applications shall be submitted to the Xxxx who, at the end of the posting period, shall pass them to an Election Committee composed of three (3) faculty , selected by the departmental faculty, none of whom shall be candidates for the position. The Election Committee shall conduct a secret ballot, and shall refer the elected candidate to the President of the College for appointment. If the position of Department Chair becomes vacant, the Xxxx shall immediately post the position and appoint an interim replacement until an election is conducted. All regular faculty are eligible to run for the position of Department Chair. In those instances where no regular faculty member is available to fill the position, the Department, in consultation with the administration, may elect a sessional employee as Chair.
3.5.2 Coordinator positions that are entirely non-instructional and not associated with any specific department, shall be filled using the normal hiring procedure for faculty, as described in this Agreement. Examples include the Coordinators for First Nations Education and Cooperative Education.
3.5.3 The specific duties of Department Chairs shall be as described in the position description attached in Appendix E, and instructional release times, normally between the limits of twenty percent (20%) and sixty percent (60%), shall be determined jointly by the appropriate Xxxx and Department.
Department Chairs in consultation with the appropriate Xxxx, shall assure that a properly constituted DRC is assembled. The DRC shall have a membership of at least five (5), and be composed of:
a) the Department Chair, who shall act as Chair of the DRC except in those Faculties or Schools with no Chairs, in which case the DRC will elect its own Chair;
b) all eligible Faculty Members who choose to serve from the Department, subject to the terms in Article E2.7.
Department Chairs. (a) Department Chairs shall normally be a tenured Associate or Full Professor. Lecturers are ineligible to serve as Department Chairs.
(b) Where a department has no tenured members willing or able to serve as Department Chair, then the Vice-President / Academic Xxxx, in consultation with the department members, shall appoint an Assistant Professor or non-tenured Associate Professor as Acting Chair for a term of one (1) year. If none is willing to serve, then the Vice-President / Academic Xxxx, in consultation with the department members, shall appoint a tenured member from another department.
(a) Departments of three (3) or more Members holding any professorial rank shall conduct a vote to nominate their Chair and present such recommendation for approval by the Vice-President / Academic Xxxx.
(b) For all other Departments, the Chair will be appointed by the Vice-President / Academic Xxxx after consultation with Department members holding any professorial rank.
26.3 Department Chairs shall serve a fixed term of three (3) years, with a possibility for appointment to one (1) further consecutive term after another election or consultation by the Vice-President / Academic Xxxx, as the case may be.
26.4 In their capacity as full voting members of the Academic Committee, Department Chairs exercise academic leadership for the University. Department Chairs discharge various responsibilities related to their leadership and coordination of departmental activities, including the following:
(a) To represent the Department’s interests within the University;
(b) To attend the meetings of the Academic Committee, to consult with department members about matters facing Academic Committee, and to report back to department members on the business of Academic Committee;
(c) To meet with Members of their departments in April of each year to review Merit applications, if any;
(d) To hold regular department meetings, at least once per term in the Fall and Winter, and submit minutes from such meetings to the Vice-President / Academic Xxxx;
(e) To ensure, after consultation with the department members, that proposals requiring approval of the appropriate academic bodies are brought forward ;
(f) To consult with the department members in preparing an academic plan regarding Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant support, new courses, future hires, curriculum development, and all other departmental and academic matters;

Department Chairs. Section 12.11.
Department Chairs. Department Chair compensation will include three components: 1) Reassigned time during the regular semesters; 2) Higher compensation based on a 40 week calendar of responsibilities; and 3) a stipend.
22.1.1 Reassigned time: Department chairs shall receive reassigned time (as defined in 6.18) based on the size of the department as determined by weekly Teacher Hours based on the formula defined in 22.1.2. Such provisions are effective as of Spring 2007. Additional reassigned time may be granted at the discretion of the appropriate vice president and with immediate written notice to the Faculty Association. The allowed reassigned time may be taken over a single year with unequal amounts taken in fall and spring semesters. All allowed reassigned time must be used. With the permission of the appropriate Vice President, department chairs may request additional reassigned time in lieu of direct compensation. Such reassigned time will be valued at $389 for each additional LHE of reassigned time. All chairs of instructional departments may exercise the option of transferring up to three LHE of reassigned time to another tenured faculty member in the department for assistance with departmental duties. The reassigned time granted to the Design Technology department includes 3 LHE for the AET assistant to the chair and shall only be used for that purpose. The reassigned time granted to the English department and the Mathematics department includes 3 LHE for assistant to the chair and shall only be used for that purpose. The chairs of the Mathematics department and the English department have the option of transferring more than 3 LHE to one or more assistant(s) to the chair. Department Chairs. Department chairs are created in specific academic disciplines and programs based on the needs of the College as determined by the college administration. The administration will select the department chairs from willing instructional faculty in each of the academic disciplines and program areas. Instructional faculty members within each department may make recommendations to the administration on the selection of instructional faculty to serve as Department Chair with their department. Instructional faculty employed in such positions may, at the discretion of the administration, receive release time for the department chair duties.
