Temporary Upgrade Pay. When, in the determination of the department head, it is necessary to assign the full range of duties and responsibilities of a job classification higher than those normally performed by an employee due to the temporary absence of an employee in a higher job classification or a vacancy in a higher level job classification, employees so assigned shall be compensated as follows: A. If the assignment is temporary due to the vacation, sick leave or other temporary absence of the employee in the higher classification, the employee temporarily assigned shall be paid an additional $1.25 per hour for all such hours assigned. If an employee who holds a “lead” or “senior” position, and thereby has “supervisory” duties and responsibilities as set forth in the classification specification for his/her position, is assigned the essential duties and responsibilities of a supervisory position represented by the Supervisory Team Associates (STA) bargaining unit, he/she must serve in that position for a minimum of 80 hours in order to be eligible to receive pay for serving in a higher classification, at which point the pay for serving in a higher classification will be retroactive to the first day on which the employee began the acting assignment. For other temporary acting assignments, the employee must work one full work day in an acting capacity in a higher-level position that is temporarily vacant in order to be eligible to receive pay for serving in a higher classification. However, where the employee is temporarily assigned to work in a City-designated emergency related positions (e.g., Communication Operator), the employee will only be required to work a minimum of four hours in the higher-level position in order to be eligible to receive pay for serving in a higher classification. B. If the position to be filled is vacant and there is no valid eligible list for that job classification, the department head may temporarily assign an employee who meets the minimum qualifications of the vacant position. Temporary Upgrade Pay. An employee who works the last normal workday before a holiday and the first normal workday after the holiday in an upgraded classification will be paid for the holiday at the "upgraded" rates. Any overtime work performed during this period will also be paid at the higher rate. An employee who completes his/her last normal workday in an upgraded classification but is not scheduled to work the next normal workday in an upgraded classification is considered released from his/her "upgrade" at the end of the last normal workday. However, if he/she is called out in this interim period and it is necessary to upgrade the employee due to specific job responsibilities, the employee will receive overtime at the "upgraded" rate, and the "upgraded" rate for any holiday that falls between the last normal workday and the end of the overtime period worked in the upgraded classification. An employee shall be notified of his/her step up period, which may or may not include an adjoining holiday. If an employee's last normal workday was in an upgraded classification and he/she is scheduled to work the next normal workday in an upgraded classification and is sick, he/she will continue to be paid sick leave time at the "upgraded" rate for up to a maximum of two days or until scheduled time in the upgraded position ends, whichever is less. Vacation taken by an employee who would otherwise be working in an upgraded classification will be paid at the employee's "normal" rate of pay, and is considered as work in the employee's normal classification.
Temporary Upgrade Pay. The Department may, in its sole discretion, assign employees to perform work in a higher classification. Such assignments shall be no longer than 960 hours unless extended by the Chief or designee. An employee so assigned shall be compensated at the step within the range of the higher classification that provides a minimum of five percent more than his/her salary as currently defined on the payroll system. Temporary Upgrade pay shall be paid for all assigned time worked in the higher classification. The department has the prerogative to return such employees to their regular classification at any time. Primary consideration for an acting assignment will be given to those Officers on an active promotional Sergeants list provided that they are currently performing their duties in a satisfactory manner and meeting departmental expectations. If an Officer on the promotional Sergeants list is not selected to temporarily work as a Sergeant, at the Officer’s request, Management will provide feedback regarding the reason(s) they were not selected. The Department, at the Chief’s discretion, may develop a list of desired qualifications for members to temporarily perform the duties of a Sergeant, in an effort to prepare those duties. 29.1. Any employee temporarily assigned and working in a higher classification who incurs an injury or illness which causes the employee to be absent from work, shall revert immediately to the employees regular classification, unless otherwise required by law, and shall not receive Temporary Upgrade pay for any time not actually worked.
Temporary Upgrade Pay. The rate of pay for a temporary upgrade, in accordance with Article 25.3, shall be as follows: Police Officer upgraded to Sergeant earns Sergeant regular hourly rate of pay for the period of the upgrade. Temporary Upgrade Pay. 10.10.1 A Police Officer or a Police Sergeant who is temporarily upgraded to a higher classification will have his/her salary step adjusted to the higher classification’s salary step that is the closest to an adjustment of at least 5% above the employee’s base salary, no greater than the top step. 10.10.2 When a Police Sergeant is temporarily upgraded to a higher classification, his/her conditions of employment will continue to be covered by this MOU. 10.10.3 If a Police Officer or Police Sergeant who is temporarily upgraded to a higher classification would have received a pay increase in their lower classification due to an annual step increase, contractual pay increase, obtaining educational incentive pay, obtaining a POST certificate, or earning Master Officer or Master Sergeant designation, their pay in the higher classification will be adjusted per 10.10.1 to reflect the pay increase. 10.10.4 The parties agree that to the extent legally permissible, temporary upgrade pay will be reported to CalPERS as special compensation for Classic members only, pursuant to 2 CCR 571(a)(3).
Temporary Upgrade Pay. 6.1 Any employee who is assigned by the Department Head or designee, and with the approval of the City Manager, to a higher classification in the absence of the incumbent for a period of three or more days, shall receive a 10% wage increase while in this status. However, in no event shall the upgrade pay per hour exceed the top step of the classification to which the employee is temporarily upgraded. City Manager approval must be obtained prior to the employee working in the higher classification. 6.2 Any employee who is assigned by the City Manager to a vacant or interim Director position, for more than two consecutive weeks, shall receive a 10% wage increase while in this status. If subordinate employees are also receiving temporary upgrades during the same period, there will be a 10% differential between the highest upgraded salary of a subordinate employee and the upgraded salary of the employee serving in the Director role. Under no circumstances shall the upgraded employee’s salary exceed the top step of the Director classification into which they are upgraded. In some circumstances this may result in an upgrade that is less than 10% above an upgraded subordinate’s salary.

Temporary Upgrade Pay. An employee temporarily assigned by a Manager to fill the duties and responsibilities of a higher classification will be paid at the step of the temporary classification salary range which is at least five percent (5%) above their current paid rate in their permanent classification, or to the top step of the range of the higher classification, whichever is less. In order to be compensated at the rate of the higher classification, an employee temporarily reassigned shall meet the minimum qualifications and substantially assume the duties of such classification. The temporary assignment shall result in the relinquishing of the employee’s regular duties to a substantial degree. The upgrade pay will be for a minimum of one (1) hour a workday. In addition, an employee who is temporarily upgraded for four (4) or more hours in a workday will be compensated at the upgraded rate for the duration of their entire shift for that workday.

The Temporary Upgrade Pay must provide a minimum of a 10% increase in salary. Temporary Upgrade Pay above 10% increase in salary is at the discretion of the City Council.
