Temporary Upgrade Pay. When, in the determination of the department head, it is necessary to assign the full range of duties and responsibilities of a job classification higher than those normally performed by an employee due to the temporary absence of an employee in a higher job classification or a vacancy in a higher level job classification, employees so assigned shall be compensated as follows:
Temporary Upgrade Pay. The Department may, in its sole discretion, assign employees to perform work in a higher classification. Such assignments shall be no longer than 960 hours unless extended by the Chief or designee. An employee so assigned shall be compensated at the step within the range of the higher classification that provides a minimum of five percent more than his/her salary as currently defined on the payroll system. Temporary Upgrade pay shall be paid for all assigned time worked in the higher classification. The department has the prerogative to return such employees to their regular classification at any time. Primary consideration for an acting assignment will be given to those Officers on an active promotional Sergeants list provided that they are currently performing their duties in a satisfactory manner and meeting departmental expectations. If an Officer on the promotional Sergeants list is not selected to temporarily work as a Sergeant, at the Officer’s request, Management will provide feedback regarding the reason(s) they were not selected. The Department, at the Chief’s discretion, may develop a list of desired qualifications for members to temporarily perform the duties of a Sergeant, in an effort to prepare those duties.
Temporary Upgrade Pay. The rate of pay for a temporary upgrade, in accordance with Article 25.3, shall be as follows: Police Officer upgraded to Sergeant earns Sergeant regular hourly rate of pay for the period of the upgrade. Police Sergeant upgraded to Lieutenant earns one hundred fifteen percent (115%) of his or her regular rate of pay.
Temporary Upgrade Pay. Whenever the perceived needs of the City require an employee to temporarily perform all of the duties of a job classification that has a higher pay range than the pay range associated with their current job classification for a period of more than twenty-one (21) consecutive calendar days, the employee shall be designated as being in an acting assignment and shall receive additional temporary upgrade pay while in the acting assignment. In such cases, the employee shall be paid at an appropriate level which will assure an increase of not less than five percent (5%) and not more than fifteen percent (15%) greater than his/her current base salary. Subsequent to designation in an acting assignment, in the event that the City does not need the employee to serve in an acting assignment for at least twenty-one (21) consecutive calendar days, the employee shall receive the temporary upgrade pay for that period of time the acting assignment lasts. In the event that at the beginning of an acting assignment, it is not perceived that the acting assignment will last at least twenty-one (21) consecutive calendar days, and the acting assignment nonetheless extends beyond twenty-one (21) consecutive calendar days, the employee in the acting assignment shall receive the temporary upgrade pay retroactive to the first day of the acting assignment. Temporary upgrade pay is reported to CalPERS except for those employees who are “New Members” as defined by the California Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA). The additional pay shall commence on the first (1st) calendar day of the temporary reassignment of the performance of duties of the higher classification. The recommendation that an employee be required to perform duties of the higher classification shall be placed in writing by the Police Chief and submitted to the Human Resources Director for approval. An employee may not serve in an acting capacity for more than six (6) months without prior approval from the Police Chief. A person appointed to an acting assignment shall be eligible to receive merit increases in his/her regular position during the acting assignment. The Human Resources Director shall obtain the employee’s acknowledgement of the temporary performance of all of the duties of the higher classification prior to the employee’s assuming or continuing the duties and additional compensation. Temporary Upgrade Pay. 10.10.1 A Police Officer or a Police Sergeant who is temporarily upgraded to a higher classification will have his/her salary step adjusted to the higher classification’s salary step that is the closest to an adjustment of at least 5% above the employee’s base salary, no greater than the top step.

Temporary Upgrade Pay. An employee temporarily assigned by a Manager to fill the duties and responsibilities of a higher classification will be paid at the step of the temporary classification salary range which is at least five percent (5%) above their current paid rate in their permanent classification, or to the top step of the range of the higher classification, whichever is less. In order to be compensated at the rate of the higher classification, an employee temporarily reassigned shall meet the minimum qualifications and substantially assume the duties of such classification. The temporary assignment shall result in the relinquishing of the employee’s regular duties to a substantial degree. The upgrade pay will be for a minimum of one (1) hour a workday. In addition, an employee who is temporarily upgraded for four (4) or more hours in a workday will be compensated at the upgraded rate for the duration of their entire shift for that workday.

Temporary Upgrade Pay. An employee who works the last normal workday before a holiday and the first normal workday after the holiday in an upgraded classification will be paid for the holiday at the "upgraded" rates. Any overtime work performed during this period will also be paid at the higher rate. An employee who completes his/her last normal workday in an upgraded classification but is not scheduled to work the next normal workday in an upgraded classification is considered released from his/her "upgrade" at the end of the last normal workday. However, if he/she is called out in this interim period and it is necessary to upgrade the employee due to specific job responsibilities, the employee will receive overtime at the "upgraded" rate, and the "upgraded" rate for any holiday that falls between the last normal workday and the end of the overtime period worked in the upgraded classification. An employee shall be notified of his/her step up period, which may or may not include an adjoining holiday. If an employee's last normal workday was in an upgraded classification and he/she is scheduled to work the next normal workday in an upgraded classification and is sick, he/she will continue to be paid sick leave time at the "upgraded" rate for up to a maximum of two days or until scheduled time in the upgraded position ends, whichever is less. Vacation taken by an employee who would otherwise be working in an upgraded classification will be paid at the employee's "normal" rate of pay, and is considered as work in the employee's normal classification.
