Promotion to Sergeant. A. On an as needed basis, promotional exams will be given for the position of Sergeant. Any promotion made during the year will come from a list established in accordance with the provisions of this Article.

Promotion to Sergeant. The University shall first attempt to fill all Sergeant vacancies from current bargaining unit members. All vacant positions will be posted as an opportunity for all Police Officers. If no bargaining unit employees apply, or none that apply meet the minimum qualifications, the position will be posted externally. Should one or more bargaining unit employee who meet the minimum qualifications apply for the vacant position, the position shall be awarded to the most qualified candidate based upon his or her qualifications (education, training, etc.). Having a special assignment is not a valid reason for disqualification for a promotional opportunity. If the University determines that none of the current employees possesses the skill and ability required for such position, then the University may post to fill the position from outside applicants. Current employees will still have the right to apply and compete for the open position.
Promotion to Sergeant. Base salary compensation for employees promoting to Sergeant shall be established at the applicable salary step that will result in a one-step increase (approximately 5%), when compared to the employee’s rate of pay including longevity pay and educational incentive pay, but excluding any and all other additional salary compensation prior to the promotional appointment.

For any testing that occurs before December 31, 2018 the full time police officer must have a minimum of three (3) years of employment from the last date of hire. An employee must have a minimum score of 70% on the oral interview board (outside LE Panel) to continue in the promotional process. The oral interview board will be comprised of outside command officers holding a minimum rank of lieutenant and above from law enforcement agencies. The combined scores of the written and oral interview board must be a minimum of 56 points to continue in the process. Candidates shall be ranked on the promotional eligibility list in order of their combined weighted score on the written examination, oral board interview, specialized assignment experience points and Administration/Command Staff Evaluation Points. Promotions within the bargaining unit and to Police Sergeant shall be made from the promotional eligibility list by selecting the top person receiving the most points on the list. Once the appointment is made, the selected employee will serve a one-year probationary period during which they will perform the job duties of the Police Sergeant. If at the end of this one-year period the employee can adequately perform the job duties, they will be permanently raised to this position. If it is determined anytime during this one year period that the employee cannot adequately perform the job duties, they will be returned to his/her prior position and the higher classification will then be refilled according to the provisions of this Article. Promotion to Sergeant. Vacancies in the Sergeant ranks will be posted and members having completed five (5) years of continuous service or more at the time of the test shall be permitted to sign up for participation in a competitive examination as per Section 16. All appointments and promotions up to and including the rank of Sergeant, shall be made from the ranks of the Department and not from an outside source.
Promotion to Sergeant. For Correctional Officers in a specialty assignment receiving a 5% pay differential, the promotional offer will be a minimum of 5% to promote to Correctional Officer Sergeant. If the Correctional Officer was not in a specialty assignment receiving a pay differential, the promotional offer will be a minimum of 4% to promote to Correctional Officer Sergeant. Promotion to Sergeant. Employees promoted to the classification of Sergeant shall serve a one (1) year orientation period. During such orientation period, the employer, for just cause, may demote such employee back to his/her former classification. It is further agreed that employees may exercise the right to voluntarily return to their former classification. The employee demoted shall not be permitted to disrupt the then in effect shift preference of other employees within the bargaining unit. If an employee is absent from work due to illness or other reasons for a period of seven (7) regularly scheduled working days or longer, such period of his/her absence shall be added to the probationary period.

Promotion to Sergeant. A) Written and oral examinations shall be given when a vacancy occurs and there is no current eligibility list. Such examination shall be based on the job requirement of the classification vacancy to be filled. In the event that more than three or more employees pass the examination and are eligible for promotion, their names shall be listed in the order of their scores. Said list will be considered current for one (1) year or until less than three names remain. B) By the date of the written test, a deputy must have completed four (4) years seniority with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department, and five (5) years police experience. Police experience is defined for a law enforcement officer as an officer working full time with a certification recognized by Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). C) Testing procedures shall be as follows: 1. Written Exam: the written examination shall be a standard validated sergeant test. The candidates must pass the written exam by a score of 70% to proceed to the next step.
Promotion to Sergeant. Any member, having completed three (3) years of service to the Town as Patrol Officer, shall be eligible for promotion to the rank of Sergeant. Ten percent (10%) of the maximum possible one hundred (100) points, or a maximum of ten (10) points, shall be attributable to education and/or military service as follows: five (5) points being awarded for an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice related field; or five (5) points awarded for either two (2) years of active military service of four (4) years or National Guard or Reserve service; or ten (10) points being awarded for a Juris Doctorate, Masters Degree in Criminal Justice related field or Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice related field. 4. Ten percent (10%) of the maximum possible one hundred 5. The results of written examinations of all candidates shall be posted prior to announcement of promotion(s) to the rank of Sergeant. In the event of tie scores resulting from the procedures defined above, seniority shall prevail.
