i. The educational philosophy of ASE is that school exists for the welfare and dignity of the child. Education at ASE is student-centered and each child is recognized as a unique individual with unique interests, needs, and abilities. ASE aims to develop responsive, productive, and civic-minded youth by inspiring them to follow their dreams while making the world a better place for themselves and others. The purpose of ASE is to xxxxxx productive attitudes toward work, family, and community. When students have a positive attitude toward school and community, their perception of transforms. This will be evidenced via character education, civic clubs, teacher- student mentorship, Phoenix Guides, and various family night activities. Teachers are required to provide an afterschool club, as indicated on teacher annual expectation agreements.
ii. ASE focuses on core knowledge and essential skills so that children may achieve the mastery upon which further learning will be built. ASE is a college preparatory charter school focusing on math, science, and technology. Members of the ASE believe that excelling in math and science prepares youth to succeed in college, the workplace and the 21st century. Our vision is to enable students to succeed in school and have options to enter math, science and engineering careers. The school requires all students (grades 1-12) to complete a science fair project each year. Teachers are required to provide afterschool tutoring, as indicated on teacher and student schedules.
iii. Albuquerque School of school model is rigorous (prepares students for college), relevant (reinforces math and science skills) and is underpinned by a tight web of relationships (a strong culture reinforced by teachers and parents). ASE utilizes technology across all of these dimensions to reinforce its school model and curriculum. Student achievement/outcome is built on 3 core principles within the school model:
a. a challenging math and science curriculum supported by theory;
b. a focus on assessment; and
c. a culture of constructive competition, self-discipline, and parental engagement. High school student transcripts reflect completion of AP classes and dual credit courses. Students participate in school trips to college campuses in grades 8 -12. Each classroom is themed after a specific college. Students in grades 1 6 are introduced to college culture and complete projects and activities based on a s...

i. Shorter learning modules (seminars) through which students will receive concentrated instruction over a smaller subset of academic standards. At the PEC form adopted April 8, 2022 6 Initials: conclusion of each term, students will take exit exams in each seminar (core content and flavor) to determine whether students have reached the required proficiency levels for that seminar. The school’s choice-based philosophy of education provides students the freedom to choose from a set of seminar-versions. Since seminars are often offered in various versions ("flavors"), taught by different teachers, students will have the choice in the specific theme through which they will receive the instruction over the content of those seminars. Thus, the different versions through which each seminar is offered will be unique in their focus and instructional approach, thus allowing students to choose how they want to learn the content through a set of discrete options. This extends across all core and elective (e.g. PE, art) content areas, as well as into the school’s unique upper division seminars.
ii. Students will be placed in courses based on a combination of their age and their proficiency on academic standards and, therefore, classrooms may have students of mixed grade or age levels.
iii. Explore Academy students will have daily academic flex periods, allowing them to complete homework, collaborate, attend tutoring, pursue credit recovery, attend school meetings, visit teachers (and case managers in the case of special education students in compliance with their Individualized Education Plans, “IEPs”), and complete make-up work as needed.
iv. The school’s staff will be provided with time for professional collaboration, such as in professional learning communities, to function as a forum for the sharing of best practices/instructional strategies, data analysis from seminar/exit exams, creation/modification of future exit exams, analysis of student satisfaction data, creation/modification of future seminars, etc. This collaborative component will be essential in allowing teachers to work together, share their experiences, and streamline their efforts as they work to implement this innovative form of education.
v. There are numerous ways in which the school will communicate with parents. The school will communicate with parents through its website and a weekly newslett...

i. Each grade level is to arrange for no less than 18 OSIs (Out of School Instruction) through parental and community involvement, to be supported with documentation that verifies instructional purpose. Evidence may include lesson plans, OSI schedule and documentation, assignments related to the OSI, and the outcomes measured by the content teachers.
ii. Through lesson plans, teachers will demonstrate the use of data generated by the short cycle assessment to set achievement goals for the school, grade level, class and individual student. Testing data from each short cycle assessment will be provided and used as a guide for student improvement and to drive instruction.
iii. Teacher collaboration occurs daily through a one-hour team prep (with a second prep for classroom needs), monthly at staff professional development, and monthly at department collaboration meetings.
Comprehensive Educational Program of the School. The School’s educational program shall be as described below: Albuquerque Bilingual Academy (ABA) provides instruction in two languages. This method of delivery in educational research literature is identified as a Dual Language Model where two languages are used. At ABA, instruction is provided 50% of the time in English and 50% in Spanish. Students demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors.
i. Bilingual education is the foundation of the ABA charter. ABA implements the dual language model of bilingual education that allows students to receive three hours of instruction in their home and target languages, resulting in three hours in Spanish as well as three hours of instruction in English. The bilingual education experience is said to “shape the brain for a lifetime.” The ABA BMEP Instructional Plan requires that students receive Spanish content instruction in the following subject areas: social studies, math, Spanish language arts, and; the following English content instruction: science, English language arts, math support, ELD (falls on the Spanish instructional side, but is provided by the TESOL certified instructor at each grade level).
ii. Blended learning is employed throughout ABA with various models implemented depending on student readiness. Digital core and supplemental curriculum programs are utilized to personalize a learning path for students.
iii. Student data binders: Each homeroom teacher is required to maintain data folders for their students. These data binders contain goal setting worksheets, monthly calendars, and assessment data. Students are required to keep track of their daily attendance through the use of the monthly calendars. Students also keep track of their assessment data from multiple sources such as short cycle assessments, classroom tests and quizzes, and formal writing samples. These data binders are readily available upon request and shared with parents and stakeholders when necessary. At the end of each school year, these data binders are collected and passed onto the next classroom teacher. This is done so that they have a beneficial reference tool they can then use to plan instruction with regards to their incoming class.
iv. Student data profiles: ABA teachers maintain student data profile sheets on each student in their homeroom class. These profile sheets provide a brief snapshot of the student's assessment results from different assessments administered throughout the academic year.

Comprehensive Educational Program of the School. The School’s educational program shall be as described below: VGHS has long been focused on creating a school culture that is inclusive, reflective of the local community, validates students’ cultures and identities, and supports all students’ sense of belonging. VGHS values the cultural backgrounds of all students in order to strengthen student’s self‐identities and self‐worth. The unique teaching methods used at VGHS are fundamental to the development of this type of school culture. The students who choose to attend VGHS, mostly Native American and Hispanic, are often the students who have been most marginalized and left vulnerable by K‐8 education, and who do not see themselves in the content and process of school.
1. Positive perspectives on parents and families.
2. Communication of high expectations.
3. Learning within the context of culture.
4. Student‐centered instruction.
5. Culturally mediated instruction.
6. Reshaping the curriculum.
7. Teacher as facilitator. The foundation of CLRT not highlighted in the list above is the building of relationships with students and getting to know about their home cultures. The CLRT principles outlined by the Education Alliance are infused with knowledge of students that are fundamental to the creation and implementation of learning expeditions at VGHS. The learning expeditions reshape the curriculum and learning experiences are situated within the context of student home cultures, with particular emphasis on the least represented students, our Indigenous students. At VGHS we design curriculum with authentic relevance to students’ lives. We also partner closely with local Indigenous educators and stakeholders to reframe the narratives told to meet truth and reconciliation and teach students multiple perspectives that validate culturally different ways of knowing. VGHS also has a strong SEL program that is centered in our "Crew" class, a daily class that teaches SEL skills, soft skills for employment, and world events. VGHS has in‐person instruction 90% of the time. VGHS does offer a night school for students who need alternative hours for schooling. The night school program uses an online format with direct instruction and tutoring for students.
