Mentor. A Mentor is a teacher trained and assigned to provide professional support to a Resident Educator following the guidelines and protocols of the Resident Educator Program.

Mentor. Mentors are selected from specific subject departments within the school and are responsible for the subject application and supervision of student teachers. They are responsible to the professional tutor for arranging access to carefully selected classes in order to give the student teacher a variety of teaching experiences. Mentors are normally members of staff who are recognized as being effective classroom practitioners. Mentors are teachers who have received, are receiving or are waiting to (shortly) receive specific training for supporting student teachers. Mentors are responsible for guiding, supporting and training the student teacher during their school experience. Mentors will liaise with other members of the department, that the student teacher will be working with, in order to address the requirements for the school experience successfully. Mentors are expected to meet regularly (i.e. on a weekly basis in a dedicated session during the school day, the timing of which is mutually agreed upon by all parties in order to ensure that entitlement requirements are being met) with their student teacher in order to discuss practical and theoretical matters relating to the teaching of their subject (including target setting and the reviewing of student progress against the Standards); the points of discussion and actions arising from this meeting should be recorded (a proforma is provided). Partnership schools are expected to facilitate these regular mentor meetings. In addition to liaising with the professional tutor they will also liaise with the university subject tutor and (as required) with the link tutor. Mentor. A mentor shall be defined in accordance with section 1526 of the school code and shall provide professional support, instruction and guidance. Every effort will be made to provide a mentor who is a master teacher from the bargaining unit. A mentor teacher shall be assigned in accordance with the following: A. Participation as a mentor teacher shall be voluntary. B. Every effort will be made to match mentor teachers and mentees who work in the same building and have the same area of certification. C. The mentor teacher assignment shall be for one (1) year subject to review by the mentor teacher and mentee after 2 months. If a change is warranted, this may be mutually agreed upon by the mentor, mentee, and administration. D. The relationship shall remain confidential (if desired) and shall not, in any fashion, be a matter included in the evaluation of the mentor teacher or the mentee. Neither the mentor teacher nor the mentee shall be permitted to participate in any matter related to the evaluation of the other. E. If there are no appropriate volunteers within the current teaching staff to serve as needed mentor teachers, the administration may seek involvement from the community, i.e., retired teachers, college or university professors, etc.

The Resident Educator Committee members shall establish the criteria for recommending the most appropriate selection of Mentors, assignment of Mentors to REs, and the Lead Mentor assignment and make said assignments. The Superintendent shall reserve the ultimate authority to make final selection of said assignments. The Resident Educator Committee shall determine the process by which the Mentor or RE may request a change in assignment and such change shall occur within six (6) weeks of the initial assignment. 2. Whenever possible, the Mentor and the RE should be employed in the same building, grade level and/or certified/licensed in the same subject matter. Barring unforeseen and unique personnel qualifications, attempts will be made to avoid assigning more than one (1) RE to a Mentor at a time. 3. Mentor. An Authorized Member assigned by the Committee to act on behalf of an Agreement and work with an applicant through a program of visits and advice in order to assist the applicant with its progress to Provisional Membership and/or to being an Authorized Member The term ‘mentor’ may also refer to mentoring team appointed by the Committee of the relevant Agreement. The mentoring team will consist of two or three representatives from Authorized Members of the Agreement to which the mentee is committed to applying for Provisional Membership or to become an Authorized Member. Note: a Mentor can act as a Nominator but cannot provide Evaluators. Authorization to operate a register until the initial review. A process by which an appointed mentoring team provides support and guidance to a body that wishes to apply for Provisional Member or to become an Authorized Member of one or more of the Agreements. The mentoring role will focus on providing advice and guidance on the policies, procedures and standards of the mentee so that the mentee is given every opportunity, on application, to gain Provisional Member or become an Authorized Member of the relevant Agreement. Mentor. Section 19.1 A mentor for each year probationary teacher during the first four (4) years of probation will be appointed for one (1) year by the building administrator and may be reappointed. The mentor and probationary teacher will be identified to each other before the first day for teacher reporting in the fall. For probationary teachers who commence work after the first day for reporting in the fall, the mentor and probationary teacher will be identified to each other before the fifth (5th) workday of the probationary teacher. However, if there are not enough mentor teachers available then a mentor may work with up to three (3) second or third year probationary teachers at the same time. If there still are not enough mentor teachers available, the District and Association will meet to work on a solution. The solution may include a mentor working with more than one (1) first year probationary teachers and more than three (3) second and third year probationary teachers. After consultation with the building administrator, a mentor teacher may terminate his/her participation in the mentor program. Should this happen, the building administrator will assign another mentor. After consultation with the building administrator, the probationary teacher may request another mentor. After the request is made the building administrator and Association president will decide if a new mentor will be assigned. The mentor and probationary teacher will be assigned to the same building, unless no teacher in the probationary teacher’s main building wants to be a mentor. If the mentor committee determines, the second and third year probationary teachers may be clustered. A mentor may work with a cluster of up to five second and third year probationary teachers assigned to the same building. Section 19.3 The District and the Association realize that for mentoring to be most effective the mentor and the probationary teacher should have time to discuss issues of mutual interest. Consequently, building administrators will attempt to schedule common planning and lunch times.
