Sessional Appointments. 33.2.1 Sessional Members are appointed to participate in the delivery of academic programming. A range of additional activities may supplement assigned workload in instruction, but these duties will be assumed only at the Member’s discretion. 33.2.2 Sessional Members may choose to participate in discretionary workload activities, for their professional development and for the benefit of the University community. When an appointment decision is made, a Member’s record of effective teaching will be the only relevant consideration. 33.2.3 Sessional Members are appointed, on a term-by-term basis, for a fixed term. 33.2.4 Sessional appointments are not precursors to Full-Time Limited-Term, Tenure- Track, or Tenured appointments. 33.2.5 Sessional appointments are made by the Xxxx on the recommendation of the Chair of an Academic Unit. 33.2.6 Appointments are subject to a record of effective teaching. It is an applicant’s responsibility to provide sufficient information to enable the Chair to assess the applicant’s performance, though the submission of a teaching dossier is optional. The Chair will base the assessment on the information reasonably available to the Chair for the period under review. 33.2.7 A course is considered available to be taught by a Sessional appointee only when it is not used to make up a Full-Time Limited-Term, Tenure-Track, or Tenured Member’s course assignment. 33.2.8 A Sessional Member who has taught in the current academic year will be given first consideration for courses to be sessionally assigned. 33.2.8.1 This consideration will mean an obligation to consider first, and in good faith, the application of any eligible Sessional Member. 33.2.8.2 This consideration does not mean that the University is under the obligation to appoint any Sessional Member. 33.2.9 When a section of a course assigned to a Sessional Member is cancelled or withdrawn from that Member within ten (10) working days of the start of the course, the Sessional Member will be paid, in lieu of a stipend, ten (10) dollars per IH. 33.2.10 Sessional Members will report to their Chair absences due to illness or emergency and will neither be required to pay for a replacement nor to have to find a replacement.

Sessional Faculty: • shall hold the position of Instructor; • shall have no job security beyond the current contracts; • shall have performance and developmental reviews annually to determine suitability for renewal of appointments; • are eligible for the following benefits: - six percent (6%) in lieu of benefits; seven percent (7%) effective June 01 2016 - sick leave as outlined in Article 22.02; - leaves of absence as outlined in Article 21; - death benefits as outlined in Article 28; - stipends, which include vacation pay. Sessional faculty shall normally be hired on contracts of sixteen weeks in duration for Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall semester contract period will commence with the first duty day for sessionals in August. The Spring semester contract will commence with the first duty day for sessionals in January. The Summer semester contract will commence with the first duty day for sessionals in the summer session in which they are teaching.

Sessional Appointments. (a) All Replacement and Sessional Faculty teaching six credits or less will be paid a stipend for each 3 credits taught. The stipend will be based on the hourly rate for Step 3 of the Salary Scale during the 1992-93 academic year and Step 4 of the Salary Scale during the 1993-94 academic year. weeks x the hourly instructional rate. The hourly rate for Step 3 in 1992-93 is $51.22. The hourly rate for Step 4 in 1993-94 is $55.94. The stipend for 1992-93 is $3O75. The stipend for 1993-94 is $3300. (b) All Replacement, Visiting and Temporary Faculty teaching 9 credits or more in a given semester shall be paid on a pro-rata basis according to the Salary Scale. The appointment period will be for either a six month or a twelve month period to facilitate and to recognize full participation in Department, Divisional and College activities as outlined under the responsibilities for continuing faculty in this agreement. (c) Extended Temporary Contracts A faculty member given an Extended Temporary Contract for two or three years will be paid on a pro-rata basis for each course taught according to the Salary Scale. Each annual appointment period will be for either six months (in the case of teaching annually in only one semester) or for twelve months (in the case of teaching in both semesters) to facilitate and to recognize participation in Department and Divisional activities.

Sessional Appointments. 12.01 A sessional appointment is a temporary part-time teaching engagement. The Parties recognize that the University’s mission is best served by a largely full-time faculty and that it is not generally desirable to make sessional appointments a substitute for full-time faculty. At the same time, the Parties recognize that sessional faculty add a significant level of diversity, expertise and practical experience to the University, and their contribution to the ongoing life of the University is acknowledged. 12.02 Sessional workload limit (a) A Sessional appointment will not exceed nine credits for the period from September to April, and six credits for the period from May to August. If, prior to 1 August, a Department determines that a planned Sessional appointment may become a Limited-Term appointment, the Department shall make such a recommendation to the President and the provisions of Article 10 shall apply. (b) For the period from September to April, the workload of a Sessional appointment in which only distance courses are taught may exceed nine credits but shall not exceed eighteen credits. For the period from May to August, the workload of a Sessional appointment in which only distance courses are taught may exceed six credits but shall not exceed nine credits. (c) When two courses bearing the same calendar number and title are offered by a Sessional appointment in the same period both by correspondence and via Internet, these two courses shall be considered as only one for the sake of determining the workload. 12.03 The President shall make sessional appointments, taking into consideration the reasoned recommendation of the Department in which the appointment is to take place. The Union shall receive a copy of all sessional contracts. 12.04 With the issuance of a third consecutive sessional contract for a specific course, the member shall be deemed to have establishment in that course. The Employer shall maintain a list of the members with establishment, and the courses to which the establishment pertains. 12.05 Each time a member teaches the course after receiving establishment, the member will accrue seniority on the basis of the number of credits taught. The Employer shall keep a record of accrued seniority. 12.06 Both seniority and establishment shall be maintained but not accrue during a maximum of three consecutive years during which a member is not appointed to teach the course. Sessional Appointments. 27.3.1.1 Members hired as Sessionals are appointed for a fixed period. 27.3.1.2 Sessional appointments are not precursors to Full-time Limited-Term, Probationary, or Continuing appointments. 27.3.1.3 Sessional appointments are made by the Xxxx on the recommendation of the Chair of the Academic Unit concerned. 27.3.1.4 Reappointments are subject to a record of good teaching or professional practice, and a record of satisfactory performance of assigned duties. It is the Member’s responsibility to provide sufficient information to enable the Chair to assess the Member’s performance. Notwithstanding Article 11.0 (Evaluation of Teaching), the submission of a dossier is optional. The Chair will base the assessment on the information reasonably available to the Chair for the period under review.
Sessional Appointments. A non-continuing appointment wherein a faculty member is employed in the full-time programme to teach for one or more semesters on either a part-time or full-time schedule pursuant to a written individual contract of employment which stipulates a specific commencement and termination date. Sessional Appointments may be classified as Replacement, Visiting, Temporary or Extended Temporary. (i) Replacement Appointments are those given to non-continuing faculty to undertake courses otherwise taught by continuing faculty who have been granted a paid or unpaid leave of absence. Replacement Faculty may be hired to teach either a part-time or a full-time course load. The term of the appointment will not exceed the continuing faculty's leave time. (ii) Visiting Appointments are those given to non-continuing faculty to teach courses which have been purposely designed to augment the curriculum taught by continuing faculty. Visiting Appointments will carry teaching loads of 50% or greater. The normal term of such an appointment will be one or two semesters; in no cases shall such an appointment exceed four semesters. (iii) Temporary Appointments are those given to non-continuing instructors on an occasional basis either (i) to explore and to test new areas of study or (ii) to enable the College to review its commitment to an established area of study. Temporary appointments may be full or part-time and for a maximum of two years. (iv) Extended Temporary Appointments are those given in special circumstances to non- continuing instructors to teach less than a 50% course load where, in the opinion of the Xxxx, the unique nature of the course(s) and the qualifications of the instructor warrant a more ongoing relationship than that provided by a temporary appointment. Such contracts will be for either a two or a three year period and may be renewed. The College reserves the right to cancel the courses or to appoint a different instructor at the end of the contract period.
