Institutional Approach to Research Excellence and Impact. The University of Ottawa is a research-intensive university supporting research excellence in a broad range of scientific and scholarly endeavours. Independent national and International rankings (such as Research Infosource, QS World University and the Times Higher Education) consistently place uOttawa among the top three Ontario universities, among Canada’s top 10 research universities and among the top two per cent of the world’s universities. According to these international rankings, uOttawa ranks even more prominently in several subject areas. They include Nursing, Geography, Linguistics and Development, Political and International Studies, in which the university features in the top 100. In Chemistry, Law, Medicine and Photonics, uOttawa ranks among the top 150 universities worldwide. As a bilingual institution, the uOttawa takes great pride in offering a bilingual French and English research environment. Among the many advantages, this bilingual character opens unique avenues for collaboration regionally and internationally that benefit students and researchers. In addition, University of Ottawa researchers are encouraged to publish discoveries in either official language, thereby broadening its global research reach. Over the past years, the uOttawa intensified its research activities across all fields, significantly upgraded its research infrastructure and developed extensive local, national and international collaborations. These efforts have resulted in an enhanced environment for learning, scholarship and discovery that greatly contribute to both research and teaching excellence. Algoma University’s mandate within the system is to be a teaching-oriented university that provides programs in liberal arts and sciences and professional programs, primarily at the undergraduate level. Although we do not have graduate programming at present, several of our faculty regularly supervise graduate students from other universities. Our Research Chairs have engaged several Canadian and international postdoctoral fellows to complement their research programs. Algoma’s areas of research strength are summarized in the University’s Strategic Plan for Research (2015). They are grouped in four clusters: Anishinaabe and Indigenous communities The University possesses research strength related to the history and legacy of Indian Residential Schools. Algoma University’s campus is located on the site of the former Shingwauk and Wawanosh Indian Residential Schools, which it shares with the Shingwauk Education Trust (SET), SET’s postsecondary Anishnaabe Institute Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (SKG) and the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA), former students of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School and other Residential Schools from across Eastern Canada. The campus property is part of the original Shingwauk Trust, a piece of land legally set aside in 1874 specifically for Aboriginal education. This research cluster collaborates with the CSAA and has worked extensively with the Aboriginal Healing Foundation. The Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre at Algoma is now the repository for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation’s research and project archives. This makes the University a national destination for research on community‐based healing initiatives. This cluster is currently advertising to fill a Canada Research Council Tier 2 Research Chair in Anishinaabe Healing and Reconciliation. UOIT has an ambitious goal of amplifying its research excellence and impact with multidisciplinary, technology- enhanced approaches to scholarship and innovation. Faculty and student researchers continue to conduct fundamental research and seek creative solutions to challenges that engage industry and community partners at local, regional and global levels. UOIT has made strategic investments in research infrastructure including, more than 70 specialized laboratories. The Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre (ERC) houses the university’s unique-in-Canada education programs and research in geothermal, hydraulic, hydrogen, natural gas, nuclear, solar and wind energy technologies. It enables leading-edge research in clean and green energies and technologies and promotes Canada's entrepreneurial advantage through public-private research and commercialization partnerships. OCAD University is in a position to pioneer novel research paradigms, practices and traditions at the intersection of the visual arts, design, science, engineering, the humanities and the social sciences. Research carried out at OCAD University is characterized not only by individual faculty members’ pure research and creative and professional practice, but also by its partnerships with industry and not-for-profit organizations in diverse sectors; and by a wide range of beneficial outcomes. For students, participating in research provides essential skills and competencies they require to play a transformative role in Ontario’s economic, technological, social and cultural future. OCAD University has a long history of internationally recognized creative and professional practice and, more recently, a burgeoning program of research-creation, scholarship and innovation. Faculty members’ scholarship in teaching, research and professional activity is the backbone of the university. Over the past decade, OCAD U has built on its long history of studio-based art and design to establish significant leadership in art- and design- related scholarship. OCAD U has, for example, led important research initiatives in: inclusive design, design for health, art and the environment, visualization and engineering, digital media and other fields. These initiatives have created transdisciplinary collaborations and new models for undergraduate and graduate learning and research in labs, studios and classrooms. OCAD University requires specialized research metrics that reflect this growth and output, metrics that capture, for example, exhibitions, policy reports, designs, catalogues and reviews. Institutional Approach to Research Excellence and Impact. Queen’s is a member of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities and is one of Ontario’s leading research-intensive institutions. It has a successful track record in the planning, implementation and management of large research initiatives, with multiple national and international partners and stakeholders.
