LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND SICK LEAVE. 14:01 Leave of absence may be granted to employees for reasons and periods acceptable to the Company. In most instances such leave will be without pay but exceptions to this may be granted by the department in which the employee works, provided that the Director of Human Resources concurs in writing. The request for leave of absence in excess of five working days shall be made by the employee in writing and rendered a reasonable period in advance for the Company to have opportunity for due consideration and to make plans to cover off the employee's duties during this period of absence.
14:02 An absence from work due to illness, accident, medical or dental appointment for the employee shall be treated as leave of absence and will be allowed with pay up to the limit of sick leave of fifteen (15) days per calendar year provided that the illness or accident can, upon request, be verified in a manner satisfactory to the Company. Reasonable short absences with pay from work for the care of the employee's dependent children due to illness, accident, medical or dental appointments shall be allowed. Additionally, reasonable short absences with pay from work for the care of the employee’s parents or spouse due to medical emergency, illness or injury shall be allowed. Upon request, the father shall be allowed up to 5 (five) days leave of absence (two paid, three unpaid) for the birth of his child.
14:03 An employee with at least 13 weeks continuous service, who becomes pregnant will on request be granted unpaid leave of absence of up to seventeen (17) weeks. A further thirty five (35) weeks unpaid parental leave shall be granted immediately after the end of the pregnancy leave if so requested. During such leave, service, vacation and sick leave credits will accumulate. The employee shall make arrangements with the Human Resources Department for the continuation of insured benefits and the method of payment. Medical complications related to pregnancy or illness, which are verifiable by a physician will be covered by the Company's sick leave plan. The natural mother/father will be eligible for Supplemental Employment Benefits (SEB) as outlined in Appendix "B". LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND SICK LEAVE. A. At the beginning of every school year, each bargaining unit member shall be credited with 10 sick leave days that may accumulate up to 100. These days encompass both family sick days and personal sick days. Upon retirement from the district, employees who have accumulated sick leave, may turn them into the district in exchange for $40 per day accumulated up to 100 days. Teachers will be granted sick days equivalent to their full years of service in the district as of June 30, 2015 to start the 2015-16 school year. For example, a teacher with 7 years in the district at the end of the 2014-2015 school year, will begin the 15-16 year with 7 days in addition to the 10. At the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, the district will provide a sick leave bank, contributing 90 days to the account to be managed by the Executive Board of the RCEA. At the beginning of each school year, the district will contribute up to 10 additional days if the bank is below 90. This bank of days shall be drawn upon when any employee exhausts his/her sick leave days, and upon application to, and approval of, the Executive Team of the Association. The employee requesting use of the bank must provide the district and RCEA Executive Team with qualifying medical documentation. Thereafter, each employee will donate one half (1/2) of a sick day whenever the bank is reduced to fifteen (15) days, each of the donated days will be matched by the district. Employees can contribute to the bank additional days as they see fit. The Association agrees that it will not grant use of sick leave days from the sick bank to an employee who qualifies to be placed on long-term disability insurance and is receiving benefits therefrom.
B. At the beginning of each school year, each bargaining unit member shall be credited with three (3) days to be used for personal business. A bargaining unit member planning to use a personal business leave day or days shall notify his/her principal/supervisor at least one (1) day in advance, except in cases of emergency. With the exception of the following items, a personal business day may be used for any purpose at the discretion of the bargaining unit member. Two (2) unused personal business days may be carried to the following year. The maximum number of personal days shall never exceed five (5). Personal leave days shall, specifically, not be used for the following purposes:

LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND SICK LEAVE. (a) Except as otherwise specifically provided in this Collective Agreement, sick leave pay shall not be granted during any leave of absence or lay-off.
(b) Sick leave pay shall be granted for complications which arise from a pregnancy before and after completion of a maternity leave of absence provided that appropriate medical evidence supports such complications.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND SICK LEAVE. 17.01 An employee may be granted a leave of absence without pay up to thirty (30) days. Approval for such leave of absence will not be unreasonably withheld. Requests for such leave must be submitted in writing and approved by the National President. Such requests shall be responded to within seven (7) days.
17.02 An employee with five (5) years of continuous service may be granted a leave of absence without pay up to one (1) year. UFCW Canada will continue to provide benefits during the period of the leave of absence to a maximum of 30 days. Benefit coverage for leave of absences greater than 30 days may continue if the employee chooses to make self payments.
17.03 Subject to the applicable laws, UFCW Canada will obtain coverage under the Workers’ Compensation Act in the province in which the employee is domiciled, or in the jurisdiction of such an act in another province if no such coverage is permitted in the jurisdiction in which the employee is domiciled.
17.04 An employee with one year of service who adopts a child shall be granted adoption leave without pay to a maximum of one year.
(a) All maternity and parental leave shall be in accordance with the legislation of the province in which the employee resides.
(b) If a female employee is unavailable to work for a successive period of five working days because of being confined to hospital and admitted as an in-patient as the result of an illness or accident arising from her pregnancy, the employee shall be eligible to make a claim for Short Term sick leave. If the Short Term sick leave is approved in accordance with the standing policy at the time of the claim, Short Term sick leave will apply from the first day of absence.

14.02 The Employer may grant leave of absence without pay if an employee requests it in writing from the management. The Employer shall respond in writing within ninety-six (96) hours of receiving the request.
14.03 The Employer will grant pregnancy leave and/or paternal leave, without pay, and without loss of seniority and benefits, in accordance with the provisions of the Employment Standards Act of Ontario to those employees who make application on forms supplied by the Employer.
14.04 In the event of the death of a member of an employee’s family, the employee, provided he has completed his probationary period, will be granted a leave of absence for a reasonable time and will be reimbursed for time necessarily lost for work up to a maximum of five (5) days for the purposes of making funeral arrangements and attending the funeral. The term “a member of the employee’s family” means spouse or child or step-child. Upon the death of an employee’s father, step-father, mother, step-mother, brother, step-brother, sister, step-sister, father-in law, mother in-law, the leave of absence shall be for three (3) days. Upon the death of an employee’s grandparents, brother- in law, or sister-in law, the leave of absence shall be for one (1) day. The Employer shall pay that employee at his/her regular hourly rate, for the day or days he would otherwise have worked his/her regularly scheduled hours. At the request of the employee, and with the approval of management, such leave may be extended without pay to a maximum of fourteen (14) days in total.
14.05 Where an employee is required to serve as a juror or as a Crown witness and provides proof of that obligation to the Employer, the Employer will grant the employee paid court leave to serve as a juror or as a Crown witness. An employee who is granted court leave will be paid for that employee’s regularly scheduled hours of work, during the period of the leave, at the employee’s regular hourly rate minus any amount received by the employee for acting as a juror or as a Crown witness.
14.06 All full time bargaining unit employees shall be entitled to forty (40) paid sick hours per calendar year. All sick hours utilized by an employee shall be paid at his/her regular hourly rate.
